MOVEMENT AGAINST SUNDAY LIQUOR SELLING— PROGRESS OF METHODISM IN MEXICO—OHAR- ACTERISTICS OF PREACHING. In the Methodist Preachers’ meeting yesterday a large clerical force gathered, expecting to listen to Dr. Curry’s review of the doings of the lute General Con- ference. But the Doctor, while claiming the utmost liberty and right to traverse all the acts and proceed- ings of that body, was neither ready nor willing to do so at this time, Rev. U. GQ Goss, of the Temperapce Committee, made @ report on 1 the Sunday liquor question, and proposed for adoption the following resolutions, which succinctly Fecite the opinions expressed in the preambles or re- Pport:— Resolved, That us Methodist preachers of New York city and viciuity, we hereby tender our thauks to the Cou Bulssioners of Holice aud te, thelr, Superintendent ior taolr to enforce the provistous of thy statuves my prohibitions tho sala of intoxicating drinks. upon the Sabbath, and that we pledge them our hearty support and 0-0 eaten in sheir continued efforts to Keep every dratn Shop cloaed during (he Passiug houry of every Sabbat That we also prosené the thanks of 20,090 members of our churches and congregations, junan tmously in their Cae) to support the in their nob a pledged their co-operation In auy. way of the circumstances demand. lved, That we Aiscrotion which the stature to reluse, Ngcnsos espeelully to grove joures, und to revoke the licenses of © Hippodrome und all other licensed persons M3 hegies ‘elantly persist in tiamplivg under vot the ws of the Sta A Kesulved, That we call upon the District Attorney and the Judges of our courts to briny to trial the persons arrested for viobating the Sara daw, thut they may no longer lie under jon of ‘rad in collusion with rumsollers and intorest) the ina rume ‘fesolved, That the undue haste manitested by some of the date sin holdi ‘open court during the passing hours of the alin order 10 release persous arrested tue selling in, toxicating liquors, so that they could return imme‘iiately tc tisir notarions iuons, in wittully using sides. with the ra, 1s w dingrace ty the judicial ermine, a blot on Jaw bre: ad merits the condemnation of every lover on baler ietn w and ordet Re rey ‘That we deprecate the action of the Board of i Recorder Hackett and the various political and qui committees m their concorted aad organized if thy State as and their ympathize: ty be resistod with the sane firmness ead determination which then brought order out of chaos aud settled the principle that liberty and law at onymous terms. solved. Dr, Butier, Superintendent of METHODIST MISSIONS IN MEXICO, who has come on here on a brief visit in tho interest of bis mission, by request addressed the meeting on that wort, Re has eighteen diflerent religious socte- Hes established, over which are six American und’ sev- entecn native ministers, two of the latter being ex- prieste of the Catholic Church, very cultured men and thoroughly sound in faith. In conncetion with the Wesleyan missions in that country they number 125 ministers, enough, as Dr. Butler said, to form a good tonference. Tho only Spanish Methodist press on the face of the earth is connected with Dr, Butler’s mis- sion and it supplies whatever Spanish Methodist litera- ture 18 disseminated on this continent, North or South, Tho Doctor has two presses, oue of which cun vurn of 900 nnpressions an hour, He has also a bindery attached to his mission, His eldest daughter is acknowledged to be the best Spanish scholar in Mexico, and she makes cll the translations for him, His sou is the superintendent of the book and printing department, and his youngest daughter 13 in charge of an orphan asylum which he bas founded in the city of Mexico; so that all ‘his family are mis- sionaries, One of his sons, & very talented young minister, died not longugo. The Doctor has raised among his converts and iriends in Mexico and some personal frieuds in the United States money enough to pay for these presses, bindery, &c.. except $400. But he Wants now to get Inore money to establish a sterco- typing department in connection with bis primting House, and to publish the standard words of Methodism ‘im the Spanish tongue, His ministers have not a singie theological work in their own Janguage. He wants tor this work about $8,000, and he has received about $1,500 in Baltimore. ‘The Doctor’s remarks deeply affected the brethren, and a resolution indorsing his mission and recommending him and his cause to the churches was adopted. Dr. Naylor, a phiysician and member of the Metho- dist ‘Chureb iv (Calcutta, India, who urrived here a couple of days ugo on a visit to the United States, also addressed the meeting. He comes NOT FOK MONKY, BUT FOR MEN, Ho and some other wealthy men in Calcutta want to gel at least four men to go out there, and they will take good cure of them. Dr. Naylor ts’ Eurasian, among which class the Rey. Wiliam Taylor has bad wonder/ul success during his tour in India, The Rey, J. M. King reported for the committee to conler with other denominations on the propriety of po seige th mags temperance meetiog here at an early date, reported agalust such§mecting. The commitioe, and those with whom they consulted, agreed that they could do more good in this Mae. by vperating directly ‘on the authorities of the law. The committee presented a form of petition which was adopted by the meeting and which is to be signed by the prominent chureh tnem- bers im the several focal churches. 1t sets forth that liquor seliing on Sunday has been the most truitiul source of crime, misery, disorder and pauperism, and that the authorities of State in their enforcement of the Jaw against such salo on the Sabbath will have the hearty co-operation of those who shall sign the pe tition in favor of the enforcement of the law.
