“FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Barely Steady and the _ Market Fluctuating. GOLD 1181-8 A 118. Money on Call Loans 3 and 4 Per Cent— Government and Railway Bonds Quiet— Investments Generally Firm. —_—--—— ‘Watt Street. Mospay, April 18—6 P. M. “The banners for Miss Montmorence,”’ exclaims the Pingmaster of the circus, addressing the clown. Mr. Merryman quictly laughs in his sleeve of motley, for he knows that scion of the ducal house is only plain Jape Smith, of Baxter street, and that the banners are & delusion and a snare, Jay Gould for a day or two past has been humbugging the market with his clown’ visage of carmine and bismath, and he has been flaunting dlood-colored banners to excite apathetic bulls. In a measure he has succeeded, for the market, ‘with an occasional surge and set back, bas closed at an advance on the lowest prices of the day. Thero was a decline in the speculative list in early hours, Lake Shore falling from 56% to 6644, Western Union from 667; to 664; and Pacific Mail from 19% to 18. This, the dullest:moment of the show, was quickly suoceeded by J flourish of trumpets, which woke a sleeping market from its somnolency and started, it on the road to higher figures, So Pacific Mail was pushed up to 19%, Western Union to 677, and Lake Shore to 663;. These figures marked the best prices of the day, while a decline of 34 point or so registered quotations atthe conclusion of business, Beyond the sea-saw process we bave mentioned there was nothing noticeable in the market, Gould and Twenty-third street were at times both buyers and sellers, but there appeared to be no concert of action mer any definite plan of operations. Speculators picked up profits, independently, whenever thoy offered, as one docs birds in English stubble shooting, when beaters and battue are at adiscount. Hence the see-saw process wo bavo alluded to—a deploting Process to sinall bulls and bears, who, under its in- fluence, day by day, draw nearer tho time when, hike she maiden in the ballad, they. may have ‘“‘to sell their bed and lic in the straw.’” Erie was firm on reports of steadiness on the other sido, for the Scottish Commissioners, once again in reach of their beloved Killicrankie, take a more hopeful view of broad gauge prospects and solace themselves with the knowledge that if some bad investments were made in the Yankee railway the money so placed had been easily earned from the sales of Dundeo manufactures during the Yankee war, Apart from the speculatives the Exchange was feature- Jess, opening with the crack and fiz of a bottle of Widow: Cliquot’s premiere and ending as flat and vapid as a na- tive imitation. ‘THE SALES TO-DAY, The transactions at the Stock Exchange to-day Aggregated 135,000 shares, which wero distributed among active stocks as follows:— New York Central and Hudson, 795; Eri, 9,050; Lake Shoro, 33,570; Northwestern, 800; do. pre- ferred, 100; Rock Island, 1,225; Pacific Mail, 32,7 St. Paul, 3,800; do. proferred, 3,900; Ohios, 1,300; Wes! ern Union, 34,700; Wabash, 300; Union Pacific, 1,300 C.,C. and I.
