JOHN TAEFPE COMMITTED BY THR CORONER AND POLICE JUSTICE. ‘The inquest in the case of John Farrell, of No. 519 West Twenty-cighth street, who was killed by John was held yesterday morning by Coroner Eickhof. Dr. Heury Griswold, of No. 356 West Thirtieth street, was ‘irst called, He testified that he was called upon to attend the deceased, The latter died about an hour atter he was shot, experiencing only a few moments interval of consciousness during tbat time, The Loc- tor Was present during tnis lucid mtervai and saw the prisoner identify Taeife as the man who shot him, Martin McDouough, thirteen years of age, who lived in the same house, was the second witness. He was going up stairs at the time the shooting occurred; John Farrell, Jr., was coming down, and, on passing Tactle's door, became engaged im & quarrel, during which Farrell struck Tuefle three or four times and then whim inside his door; at ihis m 4 (Mr. Farrell, Sr.) came up and sent b stairs; justashe had done so Tacffe opened his door and fired at the deceased, afver which he went back again iuto his own room. Thomas Patchell, who resides in the same house, was next sworn, He corroborated the above testimony in rogard to the quarrel between Tavife and Farrell's son, He saw the platol in Taeife’s hands, Mary Farrell, daughter of the deceased, also saw the shooting; immediately after the report her father erred out, “Oh, I’m shot!” and thea went into their room. Thomas Farrell was next called, but gave no new evidence. His brcther Jon aud the two officers who had charge of Taeffe were wiso examined, but nothing new. The members of the Lotos Club gave a dinner last evening to Mr. Whitelaw Reid, their retiring presi- dent, His third term of office expired on April 1, and although the club's unanimous choice for re-election, he declined on account of business cares. The table was set in the parlor of the club house, and handsomely decorated with flowers. INSPECTORS CHARGED WITH RECEIVING HOUSE MONEY FROM STEAMSHIP COMPANIES. It was reported yesterday in the Custom House that Special Treasury Agent Colonel M. Hale has made bis report to the Seeretary of the Treasury respecting the question of “house money” taken by inspectors of cus- toms for professedly working overtime on steamships while discharging. It was al8o reported tha, every Custom House officer who chat for over time must how make out a bill against the owners of the ship or steamer, detailing the service done.
