M.f ‘Speculation to-day ran in the same grooves that it did yesterday, though the pace was not go rapid and the results less important. In fact, there was uo observable cause except that the droop in stocks for tho last week and the belief in lower prices resulting from the absence of business aud general stagnation of trade had created ap over- grown short interest which opened an opportunity for &@ sudden turn upward discomfiting to weakly bears and profitable to venturesome bulls, Hence, for the moment, prices aro higher 1m two or three of the specu- lative stocks, and short-watsted bears, driven to cover thoir contracts, are prone to exclaim with the apothe- cary in “Romeo and Juhet:"— My poverty, but not my will, consents. Thus, while the cubs came to grief the bigger bears have the opportunity of a better market and a higher scale of pricos op which to add to theirshort sules, Lake Bhore was as noticeable for its steadiness to-day as it was for its persistent decline yesterday. The freshet of long stock, which carried disaster with it in ite downward course, subsided to-day, and the rise and fall of the flood were reduced to such dimensions that less than a single point marked the fluctuations.
