AMUSEMENTS, THE COMEDY OF “TWINS” AT WALLACK'S | THEATRE, { A crowded house welcomed the new American | somedy of “Pwins,” by Mr. A. C. Wheeler and Mr. J Swele Mackaye, to the American stage last night. Phe event was one of universal interest, and the audi- | ence Was as brilliant and intelligent as a dramatist would wish. A man who writes a way is very much in the condition of | one who is tried for murder—he wants an ‘tellectual jury if he is innocent, and a merciful one if he is guilty, Mr, Wheeler, to whom wo attri ute the tctual authorship of this comedy—for we suppose Mr. Mackaye’s stage experience was called into the service | of Mr. Wheeler’s titerary skill—had a jury pos:essed | of both generosity and sound judgment. It warmly recognized the strength of the comedy, and was kindly | indalgent torts Weakness, This teeling was expressed | with unusual force at the end of the third act, when, | after Mr, Wallack, Mr. Holland, Miss Dyas and Mr. Floyd had been called before the curtain, the applause | continued for nearly five minutes, amid cries for | “Wheeler!’? “Wheeler!” delivered with stentorian energy. Such excitement as this was is not often ifested in a New York theatre, especially in Wal- where the audience is renowned for its gentinty. Pho gas was turned down and then turned up by the gus | fan, who was plainly a secret enemy of Mr. Wheeler, but | uvain, The orchestra, led by Mr. Thomas Baker, | who was clearly a conspirator of the gas man, struck apan air of Verdi's, with the malignant intention of ! mtroducing all the trombones, but this was also un- | availing. The applause of the audience drowned the orehestra, and the vanquished fiddlers and drummers surrendered. The house did not | want music, but Wheeler, Finuliy Mr. Lester Watlack | tame belore the curtain and announced that neither Me, Wheeler nor Mr. Mackaye was in the house, but | fracefully said that if they had been they would have been gratitied to have made their acknowleagments, &e,, &, Where were they? That question was the sphinxitic enigma to whicn the house played an unsuc- | cessful CEdipus, We ure informed that when “She | Stoops to Conquer” was brought out, Oliver Goldsmith | Toamed about the chalk pits at Fulham, fearful of its fate, afraid to seo it decided, and was finally found by | his friends im a state of deep despondency, expecting to hear of its failure. Neither Mr. Wheeler nor his | collaborateur need have had such apprehensions, “Twins’? was received with enthusiastic applause and | hearty laughter, and it 1s to be regretted that both of | Kis authors did ‘vot bow their acknowledgments from the boxes—not trom the stage, of course, for an iuthor never should be scen out of bis place nor | ihould he ever wake a speech. His work ts expected | jo speak for hit and he—deus ex machina—should per- hit the actors to tell his story, and permit only a brief plinpse of his sacred person—jast enough 10 assure | the spectators of his existence. If Mr. Wheeler aud | Mr. Mackaye had appeared in person lust evening they | woud have received the beartiest applause ever given | to any authors ina New York theatre, and we do not except even Shakespeare or Boucicault, | The central idea of the comedy is capital, ‘The | swing so much resembie each other that the triends, | she wite and the daughter of Chester Delatield accept | Mark Delaticld in lig stead, ‘This 18 an improbability | atthe start; put, if we are to leave improbability out of plays, wha Id become of the drama’ Allow- auices tnust always be made for theatrical necessitic The two Dromios are not less improbable the two Dolatields, But another improbability- psychological, because founded ou physical fact tu the differences of character. The phenomenon is rare, as every phenomenon | mast be. But this kind of” criticism may | das irrelevant. But the treatment of tne idea of this comedy of “Twins”? is open to more objection, Mr Wheeler's | rst act is weak. The j.urpose of the first aud second | acts is to exhibit the weakness of Chester Delaticld and | to displey the wtuation, But the plot ix not made | suiticientiy piain, and the audience 1s too much mys- | tited. in a the spectator should never De lett in the dark, for his pleasure 1s derived from a clear perception of the mistakes, perplexives and Dlindness of the personages of the play, The author must put him in possession of the secret, ‘This Mr. Wheeler hi not done, ‘The pot is not | conte understood. The whole truth of Richard | Wyide’s rascality should be explained from the | haceking, and in that case the audience would have | been spared mucn tedious explanation in the last act. | Nor do we think that the interest of the story in the first part of the play justities two acts, for all that is needed to, be known might be told with more effect in | one. The authors betray this radical weakness by the fact that much of the dialogue im the Lrst two acts decs not fit the action, but wanders into irrelevant fun, and depends for effect en- The frst really spon- | se that any situation received second act, where Chester tas pieces and throws on the floor the paper hich would lose the fortune of his daughter ary.
