FINANCIAL AND CONMERCIA pa SSL The Stock Market Strong, but Less Active— Speculation in Lake Shore. A GOOD BANK STATEMENT. Gold 116 1-4—Rag Currency at This Price Worth 86.02—Reported Failures in Paris— Investment. Securities Firm. Wat Street, } Sarurpay, Oct. 30—6 P, M, The chief surprise of the stock market to-day was the advance of Laky Shore from 5934, the opening price, to 6244; the close was mado at 62, The trans- ‘factions amounted to 110,000 shares. The movement, being entirely unexperiod, caused not a little comment, and the latter was by no means fayorablo to the parties by whom it is suppose! to have been engineered. Tho facts concerning the siock that appeared in today’s MERALD apparently hui (he same effect on the remain- ing bulls in it as would the shaking ofa red flag at tho. veritable animal himee’® They agreed with one accord that something had to be done and quickly, The con- eequence was that they promptly entered the market and forced the price up. Apparently the move only resulted in more heavily toading the clique, for on tho. ‘withdrawal of their orders the stock dropped to 6074 on small transactions, At this point, however, they again came to the rescue and carried the figures back to 621. All this simply illustrates how at times values are ignored in the process of speculation, and justifies the caution repeaiedly given in this column. The remainder of the “fancies” were sympathetic with Lake Shore, We believe we have the authority for stating that the November schedule issued to day to the various agents of the trunk lines shows no advance in the heretofore existing rates, a result clearly indicated by the nature and volume of existing business, THR GENERAL STOCK MARKET.
