| FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Stocks Indicative of a Decline— Business Less Active, GOLD STEADY AT 116 3-8 A 1161-2. Government Bonds Firm—Money on Call Easy at 3 Per Cent—Rag Currency Worth 85.84—Foreign Exchange Quiet. Watt Sraeezr, } Frupay, Oct. 20—6 P, M. Lake Shore to-day has continued to show a declining tendency, the last sale being 14 per cent below that of last night. The many rumors concerning this property, which have recently been putin circulation in Wal! itreet and reported in some of the daily journals, such as that the business of the road has lately greatly improved, that the company will pay a dividend next February and that there is truth in the reported jucrease in the rates for freight, &., may all be safely set down as pure fictions, invented for “tne express purpose of enabling the “clique” te make » market upon which to unload, The following tigures are worthy of study :— The earnings of the Lake Shore and Michigan South- ern Railway compare with the two previous years as follows ; 1873. 1874, 1875, Six months, Jan, 1 to June 30...... $9,797,646 $8,651,503 $6,941,000 Three months, July 1 to Sopt. 4,825,245 4,203,251 8,310,700 Total 9 months...$14,022,801 $12,864,754 $10,261,700 Decrease from 1874...... $2,002, 854 Decreuse trom 1873. 4,371,191 Of the foregoing figures all are from the official re- ports of the company except those for July 1 to Sep- tember 30, 1875, wnich, while given as the approximate, are believed to be in excess of the real figures, It will be observed that they show a decline in the gross earn- ings for nine months of this year from the same period pf last year, which is equal to over five per cent on the tapital stock, and from those of 1873 equal to over wight per cent, Concerning the business of the road for the present month of October no reliable figures have yet been received, but by thoso well posted in the nature of its business it is stated that in the item of oil alone there has not only been a large fulling off in the move- ment from what it was in September, but that it has been much below the monthly average, As to what it is doing in grain, the following statement Seems to show that itis now doing next to nothing and also points (as did the statements published in this column on last Monday) toward the accumulation of so large a supply atthe seaboard before the closing of navigation as to leave but little for the railroads to do in this line after that event, The receipts at Buftalo from October 23 to 28, inclusive, were as follows:— Wheat. Corn. By lake boats, bushels. 1,616,000 263,000 BY railroads, bushel wees” 70,000 104, 000 While the foregoing facts may furnish a sufficient reason why actual holders of the stosk should improve the present opportunity offered by movements of the chque for selling, it may be well for speculators to guard against the temptation of another combinaticn, THY FEATURES OF THE MARKET to-day were Lake Shore, of which some 63,000 shares were sold at prices ranging from 6134 to 595;, with a tlose at the latter price. Next in point of activity was Western Union, which opened at 7534, receded to 747% and ended at 754s. Union Pacific advanced to 66, after tales at 654 and closed at 65. Ohio and Mississippi tlosed ut 16, after sules at 162g a 1634, Pacifle Mail was tomparatively steady, andafter sales at 40},—20,000 shares—ended at 4034. There is a story y to be told in this connection. Pan- ama was quoted at 133 Hannibal and St. Joseph receded to 18%. Michigan Central acclinéd to 80%. The investment securities continue strong, and Stair demand by actual investors may be recorded, These are quite distinct from the so-called “fancies,” and it may be found a little later that the parties to the present “pool”? have disintegrated, One, he who is thought tohave suggested the present “bull” move- ment, is understood to be the tirst to “run,’” Satisfed with his profit on Lake Shore and Pacific Mail, he bas lollowed the example of a score of predecessors and left his comrades to gather what remamm of the débris of the “game.” THE SALES TO-DAY, ‘The transactions on the Stock Exchange to-day aggre- fated 148,000 shares:—New York Central and Hudson, 200; Erie, 5,800; Luke Shore, 62,800; Northwestern, 7,000; do, preferred, 200; Rock Island, 340; Pacitic Mail, 20,000; St. Paul, 3,600; do, preferred, 500; Ohios, 1,950; Western Union, 87,600; Union Pucifié, 3,100; 0, C.and I. Benedicks & Co. already an- nounced in the Heraup, creates some surprise, as the firm had stood very well for some years. There hag been a good deal of difficulty in this trade for some | tne, and it is evident that there will have tobe a weed- ing-out process. By decline in trade and heavy ex- penses protits have greatly diminished. The habilities of Oscar D, Dike, whose failure ap- peared in yesterday’s Heratp, are stated to be about $60,000, It 18 said the estate will yield thirty-five to furty-tive cents on the dollar, Joseph W, Duryea, large lumber dealer, will make a settlement at about tifty cents on the doliar, Dexter A. Reed, dealer in hardwood, on Centre street, who had been well and favorably known for some ten years, got his basiness matters complicated, and, it is said, is not to be found. Disosway & Hatch, leather dealers, have ‘Their failure is an important one and is among the first ‘that have taken place in that line, Ira Beard, mulliner, on Broadway, has also been obliged to suspend payments.
