~shares of the latter have been steadily declining, It “GOLD STEADY AT 117 1-8.) NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1875.—TRIPLE SHEET, FINANCIAL AND COMMERCLAL The Stock Market Irregular—Western Union | and Lake Shore the Exceptions. ———- Money Fasy and Unchanged—Foreign Exchange Lower—Investment Seeurities Gen- erally Quiet and Firm, —— WA Srareet, Tonrspay, Sept. 30—6 P, M. ‘The stock market yesterday was feverish, but showed temporary confidence in higher prices in the later deal- ‘ngs. There was an absence of exciting rumors, and this tended to stiffen prices. The statement of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company put forth yesterday created agery unfavorable impression, and the Vice President, who signed it, was subject to much adverse criticism. 1t was conceded on all sides that, if after ten months of silence the company had only to offer the public such a “lame and impotent conclusion” as that presented, with a partial summary of only two months? | business, it was time for some radical change fm the organization. The analysis of the report made im the Hxraup yesterday partly exposed the flimsiness of the eo-called statement. But in this connection there | | és authority also for adding that the steamship company 4s largely THE DEBTOR OF PANAMA 1m excess of the $500,000 loan on the iron steamships; that no account appears in the late statement of | $837,000 due Mr. John Roach on the City of San Francis- | co—allowed tosail by hissuiferance alone—nor a refer- | ence to the large amounts to be paid for the repairs of the | Peking and Tokio. Neither do the $157,000 due the gov- ernment for taxes have a place in the ‘‘statement” of the Vico President, to say nothing of the discreaited bills floating in Wall street, and bearing the audit of the company. It is about time a healthy public opinion should teach these custodians of a great property that it will not do to discredit the interests confided to them nor to trifle with their copartners by mere subterfuges, It is a notorious fact in stock circles that some of the directors of this company have made bets in Wall street that their stock would sell at twenty-tive cents on the dollar during this year. This disgraceful conduct seems very much like a partner ina firm who whispers a ru- mor of failure in order to benefit by buying up the paper of his house ata discount, This may be Wall | street ethics, but we doubt whether it will receive the | approbation of honorable men. The rumors of the dis- aster to THE THIRY AVENUE SAVINGS BANK were confirmed yesterday. The institution, however, has been in trouble for two or three years, and has been gradually liquidating. Reports as to the solvency of a prominent banking house were authoritatively de- nied. There was quite an active market in Missouri | Pacific stock, and after a slight reaction from last even- ing’s low prices to 42%, it again gradually sunk to | 893g. A German banking house, largely identified with the road, are said to be selling all the shares they can find amarket for, but whether this is on account of the bad financial condition of the road itself or want ef funds by the bankers it is impossible to say. The frends of the road state it is now under a guaranty of six per cent, and leased to the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad Company, but the may be possible, in view of these facts, that a divorce is pending between the lessor and lessee. The next quarterly dividerid of 134 per cent is advertised to be paid on October 20, but some restraining legal proceed- ing or new mortgage is spoken of, in which case an- other Indianapolis, Bloomington and Western litigation may be in store for the hapless stockholders, Officials | of the company deny the truth of all disturbing rumors. After a rally of the stock to 41, it sank again toward the close to 39%. The capital is 72,000 shares. LAKE SHORE showed considerable strength yesterday. Favorable reports from the West seemed to stimulate speculation fm this stock. It is also believed there is a large short {interest outstanding, and it may be that higher prices will prevail before the bears are induced to cover. One thing is certain, however—to wit, that the whole field ef speculation is now left to Wall street men. The merchants are out of the market, the petty bankers all ever the country have lost money by dabbling in securi- ties controlled by the local manipulators and cliques, and it is not likely a new era of speculation will set in anti] either one-man power is broken or greater pros- perity dawns upon the country. Western Union Tele- graph stock was strong on the announcement that after Monday next the rates for ocean telegrapby would be Increased to $1 (gold) per word, THE SALES TO-DAY. ‘The transactions at the Stock Exchange to-day aggre- | gated 126,000 sbares:—New York Central and Hudson, 1,693; Erie, 1,000; Lake Shore, 46,500; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 100; Northwestern, 7,700; do. preferred, 100; Rock Island, 800; Pacific Mail, 29,710; St. Paul, 800; do. preferred, 100; Obios, 3,900; Western Union, 15,000; Wabash, 600; Union Pacific, 600; Panama, 100; Missouri Pacific, 13,200; Atlantic and Pacific preferred, ‘750.
