“FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, ‘The Stock Market Irregular and Lower—Failure in London, ‘GOLD 116 3-8 A 116 5-8. ‘Money Abundant at 2 and 21-2 Per Cent on Call—Foreign Exchange Weaker at the Close—Government Bonds Firm. Wats. Sruzer, \ Fripay, Sept. 24—6 P. M. Dulness and an absence of disquieting rumors Were the principal characteristics of the stock market to- day, At the opening prices were weak; subsequently they obtained a firmer tone, with an advance of 44 a % per cent, Still later a decline set in, the conspicuous Tepresentatives of which were Hannibal and St. Joseph and Pacific Mail. The failure of Killingham & Campbell, of London, shippers of naval’ stores and general merchandise, produced but a trifling commo- tion, _ The status of the house is said not to be such as to seriously involye any of its American correspond- ents, Incidents of this nature, however, follow each other so rapidly in the commercial world and exhibit such complete demoralization, as is illustrated by the case of the Mollers (who propose to pay only fifty cents on the dollar after holding the public in doubt for days » Whether they had failed or not), that it is but natural for every man who has money invested, or who pro- poses to invest, to bear himself with extreme caution. 11 is this shrinkage of credits rather than the shrinkage .of currency that has become the bane of the country and is causing the ignorant but popular outery in favor of inflation, The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad Company pay a quarterly dividend of 2)¢ per cent October 20, ‘THE PRINCIPAL CHANGRS OF THE DAY were as follows:—Pacific Mail fell off from 35% to 8374, closing at the latter figure. This decline was attribu- ted to the morning reports in regard to the City of ‘Tokio and tho opposition beywoon San Francisco and ports in Oregon and Vancouver, which have reduced rates to losing figures. St. Paul declined from 343% to 34 for the common, and from 633 to 62% for the pre- ferred, Lake Shore declined from 53% to 63% and closed at 531%. Western Union fell off from 7654 to 15%, closing at 75: Northwest fell off to 387% for tho common and the preferred to 537%. Michigan Central was heavy and declined to 56%. Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph was steady at 194; Union Pacific opened at 7034 and closed at 70; Delaware and Lackawanna was sold at 1205 a 1204; Ohio and Mississippi sold at 15); a 15% a 15 a 1634; Hannibal and Bt. London advices by cable state that the course of the market to-day can be very briefly summed up. The various departments opened dull, and the amount of business transacted has been comparatively small, There have deen but few changes in prices, but toward the close the tone of the market had an improved ap- pearance. Government securities are steady, and there are no changes to be noted since the last quotations sent; in fact, prices of all classes of securities remain almost stationary. The only exception to the general rule is in Erie Railway bonds; they have advanced 2 per cent since this morning. There is also an improve- ment of 4 per cent in Erie common stock, the price now being 15%. The preferred sold at 30. The amount of gold shipped to America during the week is gstimated at £100,000, The shares of the Illinois Central Railroad have declined a fall 1 per cent, and are quoted now at 86. A marked decline is also to be noticed in Virginia State bonds, They have fallen 134 per cent—viz., from 58 to 5634. Four hundred and thirty-eight thousand sover- eigns arrived and have been taken to the Bank of Eng- land, The Morning Standard, a prominent Loadon journal, in its editorial columns to-day, expresses the opinion that, in case all sections of holders of Erie Rail way securities agree to adopt the scheme proposed by Sir Edward Watkin, Erie Railway shares will in two pears be worth much more than they are at present. It is rumored in financial circles, and in some quarters believed, that prominent operators have been selling the stock and buying mortgage bonds with a viow of forcing a foreclosure. A later despatch from another source, however, says:—‘The rumor that large amounts of Erie shares have been sold and the proceeds invested in mortgage bonds, the object being to institute foreclosure proceedings, is not cred- ited, nor is it believed that any such movement wil) originate on this side.’ The London wheat market is dull; arrivals of medium Milwaukee are offered at 43s, per quarter, Corn is quiet at 30s. 8d. for United States mixed, THE LATEST QUOTATIONS. Frivay, Sept, 24—6 P. M. In some branches of trade and commerce there has been a little more animation during the past week, but the merchandise markets have been irregular, and; in numerous instances, there has occurred a further shrinkago in values, which is not encourag- ing, to say the least, The fluctuations in the gold premium have .not been of especial import- ance, but have exerted some influence in view of the possibilities of the future, But the effects of over-pro- duction during the past few years and of an irredeemable currency are plainly visible throughout trade circles now. Business is almost everywhere dull, and a semblance ot activity is only begotten by liberal concessions on the part ders. Still there is some improvement from week to week and a rather more hopeful feeling on the part of the merchants, notwithstanding the occasional failures which take place in the various branches of industry. Dry goods have been in moderate request, and the agcrogate business from day to day during the week has been fair. Hard- ware has relapsed into a state of comparative dulness. Boots and shoes, drugs, 4c. have ruled very quiet, and there seems to be a general indisposi¢ion to venture beyond the pressing requirements in consummating parchases. The export movement has been moderate. Cot- ton = has deen moderately dealt in, while the business in breadstufts has been light. The flour market has ruled comparatively steady, though business has not been active. Wheat hasbeen in moderate request and prices have steadily declined, the failure of one of the heaviest shippers still further depressing the market. Corn has ruled comparatively steady, though the tendency has been toward a lower basis. Oats have settled in buyers’ favor steadily, and at the end of the week were decidedly lower than they were a week ago. Whiskey has been in demand, and prices advanced materially, Provisidns have vacillated considerably. Prices ‘at the close of the week were higher than aweek ago, though not so high as they had been during the interim, Freights and charters havo been strong and rate: © con- siderably advanced. On Friday the markets wero generally quiet, On ‘Change flour was dult, tut unchanged. Wheat was dull and nominal for all except prime old spring, which was scarce and firm.
