THE STORIES ABOUT ERIE—HON, DAVID A, WELLS SAID TO BE IN THE NEW BOARD—BARLOW SILENT—SIR WILLIAM THOMSON TO ‘*OLD PROBABILITIES "RUMORED CONSOLIDATION OF THE CENTRAL AND UNION PACIFIC RAILROADS. The “rumor committee” seemed to be in session again yesterday, to judgo of the thousand and one reports afloat on the street in reference to this corpora- tion, When it became known that Sir Edward Watkin had sailed for Europe in the Russia Erie stock suddenly advanced, on the hypothesis that the titled investigator had something very important to communicate to the London stockholders. This idea was strengthened by the fact that the baronet’s previous cablegrams had been made known on the London Stock Exchange, and were supposed to be favorable to a reorganization of the company and its being placed once more in the hands of the stockholders for the development of it interests. Mr. David A. Wells, it was understood, had been named in place of Mr. S. L. M. Barlow asa director, bat the lat- ter gentleman, when questioned in regard to the matter by a Henan representative, declined either to affirm or deny the statement.’ Of course, the position of Mr. Wells is well known on all financial matters; bis “Creed of Free Trade” in the August number of the Atlantle Monthly occasioned no cominent, but from his letter, dated at Watch Hill, on August 28, to a prominent banker in this city, it may reasonably be inferred thas every measure of inflation will meet his views, and that a NEW ISSUE OF ERIE sTocKt at no distant day may be confidently predicted, if Mr. Wells’ counsels prevail in the accredited organization of the new Board. Tho President of the North River Savings Bank (Mr. Jolin Hooper),formeriy Chairman of the Erie Protection Committee, protests warmly against the present Anglo-American bargain and sale, and does not hesitate to say that the Jewett-Barlow coinbination was in the interest of Jay Gould. There are y men, too, on Wall street who declare that the ac of Mr. Jewett, prior to the appointment of himself as receiver, were very suspicious; for instance, when the stock was declining, ’a damaging re- port was made, signed by the President—the bad business was parad and if Mr, Jewett had been short Of the stock he could’ not have played more effectually into the hands of the “bears.” A prominent William street epeculator, Mr, Russell Sage, is said to be heavily long of Erie at the present time, andas he has sold puts on thousands of shares, it is belicved he is manipu- lating the market for arise, As he is accredited with enormous wealth, and is said tobe in league with Mr. Jay Gould—a former antagonist—in “bulling” Western Union and Pacific Mail, it is not uplikely that the next few days will develop soine lively ductuatious, especially as the PRANK WORK PARTY accuse their late coudjutors of bad faith, and declare that the arrangements with Western Union were broken off by the Atlantic ond Pacific ‘Telegraph Company at the instigation of Mr. Gould, who had sold out 9 hot. ings in the former stock. At all events, “it isa very retty quarrel as it stands,” and nobody should intor- fore With the pleasant pastime of the Kilkenuy cate, THE DIRUCT CABLE COMPANY forwarded yesterday the following despatch, which will doubtless be read with great interest throughout the whole country “Professor Pirucr, United States Coast Survey, Wash- ington, D. C.:— “Through the direct United States cable, now happily completed, I congratulate you on this new bond be- tween the old and new couritries and express hope that it may be sometimes useful in communication of scien- tific results, “Sir WILLIAM THOMSON, “University, Glasgow.” RAILROAD CONSOLIDATION. ‘There wae a report yesterday that the consolidation of the Central and Union Pacific railroads was an ac- complished fact, The Iimmanp representative went to the office of the company for information and wag there informed that Mr. © P, Huntington, the president of the former company, was notin the city—bemg en route irom Calilornia—and ‘that no inform- ation of the character indicated was in the jession of the omployés of the road, Mr, Fisk, of Fisk & Hatch, Nassau street, bankers, said:—I think it is only a question of time, the consol- idation spoken of, but when the scheme ‘is ripo the Union Pacific Railroad must agree to the terms of the Central Pacific, with earnings enormous, and a fnan- cial condition simply ae, Mr. Bushnell, one of the projectors of the Union Pa- cific Railroad, said:—I do not know whether the con- solidation is effected, but I think the Central directors would be very lad w have their stock distributed and placed permanently, after the manner of the Union Pa- cific, Of course the interests of both roads are nearly identical, and it is to be hoped, in this age of consolida- tions, the directors tay find somo plan to harmonize all conflicting matters, and come together in working order in order that the stockholders shall reap the fruits of joint economy,”” THE REAL ESTATE MARKET. The Real Estate Exchange was very well attended yesterday, but little spirit was manifested in the bid- ding at the sales, Mosers, Wood, Brady & Todd sold, by order of the Supreme Court, by Sidney DeKay, referee, upon a fore- closure, the four story brick house, 18.9 by 102.2, on Fast Seventy-fitth street, south sido, 2343 foot east of First avenue, Tho mortgage amounted to $3,123, in- cluding interest from February, 1875, It was bid off for $60 over said mortaxca, by Jacob Sohuster. plain. | Home, Fort Tho property was valued’ four years ago at 500, The same iy ‘sold the two story frame baild~ and lot on the north side of 129ih street, 150% —— oan avenue, on foreclosure of a ey en e w for $500 to fonomees iL aaa aaa i ; ‘Bold upon foreclosure tho two story and frame hong, wih lot, 25 by 100.5, on West Fifty-sixth strect, north side, 175 fect east of Seventh: avenue, to John Ri plaintiff.
