GILMORE’S CONCERT GARDEN. Although the summer season is too far advanced to retain for the concert gardens the exclusive patronage Of the amusement-going public, Gilmore’s still exerts its Bold upon the lovers of music. Tuesday evening an in- teresting programme was rendered to quite a numerous @udience, among which distinguished visitors trom other parts of the country might be noted, The very frst piece on fhe bill, “Rienzi,” by Wagner, gave the band ‘fan opportunity for those massive grandiose effects which they know so well to produce, The music of the iring, as it does, the portrayal of Titanic stare perburan' passions in thelr greatest breadth and | depth, seems to be especially adapted to this band. ‘Tho greatest attractions at these concerts are, of course, the two famous cornetists, whose frequent encores recur every evening with the regular of clock work, Mr. Arbuckle played one of his favorite pieces, ‘Arban’s “Concert Polka,” with his usual vim, and Mr, Levy, who has lost nothing of his old fire, gave the “Marianna Waltz,” vy Levy and Operti, in his most vigorous, masterly ‘style, Both ar- tists won’ the lavish plaudits of an audience as mpathetic a8 it was numerous, Signor Tagliapetra sung “Il di Son L’Ore,” from Flotow's L’Ombra, with much spirit, but was somewhat deficient in the deltcate shading of expression which this conscientious baritone might improve by study. Signor E. Marzo, as accom- ist, was smooth and acceptable. Kreutzer's “Night Granada” was rendered with a yivid interpretation of its rich romantic coloring, The concert was brought to a close with Gilmore’s March Militaire, “ Twenty-sec- ond Regiment,” which seems to be fairly ctablished in public favor, | CENTRAL PARK GARDEN. This popular resort was filled Tuesday night by a fashionable and aitentive audience. The programnid | was an exclusively English one. The influence of the | Germans, among whom most of the later Engilsh musi- | cians of eminence studied, is plainly perceptible in the | ‘works given to the public Tuesday night. Had | BO pro, mes been issued and the pieces been formed for the first time people would have credited | ndelssohn with what flowed from the pen of Stern- dale Bennett, Macfarren would have exchanged places ‘with Schumann, and Pierson would in many places | have been called Wagner. As awhole the programme | was very happily selected, The “Wood Nymph | Overture,” by Sterndale Bennett, is an exquisitely shaded picce of music. Pierson’s symphonic poem, SMacboth, was quite Handelian in character, Arthur Bullivan’s ‘Dance of the Nympbe and Reapers” and his “Overture di Ballo,” from “The Tempest,” will bear a not unfavorable comparison with Gounod’s lovely ballet music in “Faust.” J. Thomas’ “Ash Grove,” a harp solo, performed by Mr. Lockwood, wus one of the features of the evening. The vis directriz of these concerts, Theo- dore Thomas, it is quite needless to dwell upon, as his earnest and unremitting exertions in the cause of true | art have long since earned for him the gratitude and earty support of the musical public of America WALLACK’S, “The Grand Duchess” meets with such marks of public favor at Wallack’s that itis a positive triumph for Miss Julia Mathews and her company. When an opéra bouffe which has been worn threadbare in the service of the public becomes rejuvenated and attractive no more palpable proof could be given of the merits of the'company representing it. Such is the case in this Instance, Mise Julin Mathews’ impersonation of the | title rdle is characterized with abundance of humor and sprightliness, devoid, however, of any taint of coarse- ness, and her vocal abilities are of a higher standard than’ is generally found on the boufle stage. “Girofie Girofla” and “Pres St. Gervais’? are in rehearsal, OLYMPIC THEATRE. Momus seems to reign in this bright and cheerful temple on Broadway. When the curtain rose last even- ing to usher in the variety performers—a company per- haps in brilliancy never before equalled in this city— there was genuine enthusiasm on the part of the andi- ence, and this seemed to infect the players with addi- tional warmth and esprit, Several comic songs and the | famous local burlesque of ‘Blue Beard’’ were the prin- cipal features of a performance every way enjoyable, and without a singie act to cause the judicious to grieve. METROPOLITAN THEATRE. ‘The programme of this theatre last evening was of a very enjoyable description. What with the songs of Mr. Billy Pastor—whose vovaliém is, indeed, of a quality beyond the usual order—the classical pictures of Milo. Mahretta, and Professor Logrenia’s marvellous troupe of trained’ birds, mice and cats, an entertain. ment is provided not inferior to any variety theatre of the kind in New York. THEATRE COMIQUE. } | Harrison street, NEW YORK CITY. Mrs, Vanderpool will deliver a lecture on the Knicker- bockers of New York, past and on the 10th of October, probably in Steinway Hall. Our model police were arraigned in large numbers be- fore Commissioner Smith at the Central Office yester- day to be tried for various offences. The ordinary quantity of hard swearing was witnessed, As aruie the charges were not of a serious character. BROOKLYN. ‘The Board of Police Commissioners yesterday made Severai transfers from among detectives and sergeants With a viow to promoting the efficiency of the force. -Counsellor John Percy, who has been in jail for some time past on charge of barratry and forgery, has been | released upon his own recoghizance to appear before the Grand Jury. United States Commissioner Winslow yesterday com- mitted Jonn McGehee, who was arrested for feloniously assaulting watchman John Duke, of the Navy Yard, on ed last, The accused is held to bail in the sum of Mrs. Augusta Limbrecht, thirty-nine years of age, re- siding at No. 7 Lorrimer street, was taken suddenly il) while standing at the corner of Broadway and Fourth street, E. D., yesterday afternoon, and died before an ambulance arrived to remove her. John Reynolds was arraigned before the United States Commissioners yesterday on charge of assisting a sailor to desert from the United States receiving ship by exchanging his clothing with the missing man. The exainination was postponed until to-day. Milton Garrison, aged fourteen years, son of ex-Judge Garrison, of No, 83 First place, was wounded in the | fleshy part of the left leg by a pistol ball, while standing atthe intersection of smith street and First place on Tuesday wight, The shot was fired by some boy un- knowa. Democratic primary elections will be held to-morrow evening in all the wards and county towns of Brooklyn for the purpose of electing delegates to the Assembly Conventions, which will be held on Monday evening | next. Delegates are then to be chosen to attend the | Syracuse State Convention. DESPERAT AFFRAY. Robert Harrison, who lives at No. 870 North Third stroct, Williamsburg, and John Burch, who re- sides in New York, worked all of yesterday at the foot of Gold street, coopering. In the evening they quar- relied, and in a fight Burch struck Harrison over the head and between the shoulders with an adze, in- fleting severe wounds, A YOUNG LADY FALLS A DISTANCE OF FUPTY FEET. Hattie Kelly, aged twenty-one years, living at No. 12 accidentally fell yesterday evening from the roof of her residence to the yard, a distance of fifty feet, and received injuries that are likely to prove fatal, When picked up the unfortunate young woman was unconscious. The family physician Was promptly summoned, and did all in his power to alleviate the patient's sufferings. ‘The precise manner in which the accident occurred, owing to the lateness of the hour when the police learned of the case, could not be ascertained officially, THE ROBBERY RECORD. The following robberies were reported at the Centra Police Office yesterday :— The rooms of Raphael Chenard, at No. 366 Ninth ave- nue, were entered by sneak thieves, whocarried off prop= erty to the value of $265, ‘Thieves entered the apattments of Ellen Lingrigg, at | No. 155 Monroe street, by means of false keys, and suc- | ceeded 1 carrying off clothing to the amount of $150. Mr. A. Stotzenberger, of No, 24 Rivington street, re- ported that he had been robbed of clothing worth $201 by some unknown thieves. Frank Claas, who was rooming with Charles Gross, at No. 82 Stanton street, disappeared very suddenly on ‘Tuesday night, with property, in all valued at $260, be- longing to Gr THE BROOKLYN DEFALCATION, EX-TREASURER SPRAGUE NOT ENTITLED TO RE- COVER HIS SECURITIES. The decision of Chief Justice Barnard, of the Su- preme Court, in the matter of the application of ex- City Treasurer Sprague to recover from the city of This popular theatre was crowded last evening upon | the rendering of an entirely new programme. John | Wild, Jobn Allen and John Pendy, with a host of | equally good performers in their specialties, convuised | the audience with laughter by their mirth-provoking oddities. It is not too much to say that tae Mullican and Skidmore Guards met with ag warm a reception as | ‘upon the first night they took the town by storm. The | local sensational drama of “Day and Night,” ended the performance and proved a success. Woop’s MUSEUM. John Thompson, the popular protean actor, made hig appearance this week at the museum in a new piece called “Pace to Face.”” Belonging to the modern school of sen sation dramas, “Face to Face’ is weak in plot and with ecarcely a scene of probable action in it, Indeed, the action of the drama is ngruous and stagey. The house was bat slimly filled and the audience were evi- dently disappointed by the bill presented. MUSICAL AND DRAMATIC NOTES, The cave of serpents has been wisely excised by the Kiralfy Brothers from grand spectacle at the Academy, “Around the World.” ‘The houses stili show the popularity of the piece. ‘The stage setting of “Mme, L’Archidne” ts the most artistic ever seen in America, Mlle. Geoffroy has made a hit in the title réle. This opéra bougfe has the elements in it of popularity, and promises to make a Jong run. The Barry Sullivan breakfast that was to have been given this morning, at Delmonico’s, on Fifth avenue, has been postponed until Tuesday of next week, in con- Sequence of the extreme illnces of General Roger A. Pryor and the death of the niece of Judge R. Brady, both of which gentlemen were to be prominent partici- pants. The list of speakers at the festival now includes | ve, of the of St. Colone! Giidersie Brooklyn certain bonds and mortgages placed in the keeping of the Comptroller at the time of the discovery of the so-called “Rodman-Sprague defalcation,” to in- demnify the treasury for all losses, has just been signed and filed. The stay of proceedings granted by | the Judge at the time the decision was rendered has just expired. The Judge says:—‘I find that during the time that the plaintiff was Treasurer, as aforesaid, the plain- uff and defendant, Rodman, conspired and confedera together to appropriate and convert to their own use the moneys of y, in the possession or under the control of the plaintifund said Rodman as Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer, as aforesaid; and that in pur- suance ot such conspiracy the plaintiff and said Rodman did jointly and severally convert to their own use cer- tin large sums of money, the property of said city, then in their possession or under their control, as afore- said. IJ find that the defaications or deficits in the com- plaint mentioned for the sum of $55,000 and $155,000 respectively, were caused by and were the result of ‘the aforesaid conversions and abstractions of the plaintiff end said Roi . Therefore the plaintiff is not entitled to the relief sought, and the defendants are entitled to judgment, dismissing the complaint, with costs.” SHOT BY A POLICEMAN. A COLORED PRISONER ATTEMPTS TO ESCAPE AND 1S KILLED, A terrible illustration was given in Brooklyn yester- day afternoon of the danger of the too ready use of the pistol by police officers upon trivial provocation. It appears that shortly betore four o’clock Patrolmen Red- mond, Joyce and Heavey, of the Tenth precinct, had occasion to arrest three negroes, who were drunk and disorderly, The arrest was made on the corner of Flatbush and Fourth avenues, and the prisoners were taken to the étation house at the corner of Pearsall and Bergen streets, There the names of the colored men were registered by Sergeant McNamara, who was at the desk, aud he then ordered their removal to the ceils in the rear. The officers who arrested them followed the prisoners, Officer Joyce holding his pistol in his hand ready for use, Brougham, Judge Brady, General Pryor, Hon. 8. 8. Cox, John T. PROBABLE HOMICIDE. Charles Barr, a well known resident of Union place Union Hill, was discovered lying in a pool of blood on a vacant lot adjoming the premises of Mr, Halpin, on Clinton avenue, West Hoboken, He was writhing in Halpin’s attention. When found he was lapsing into a comatose state, and every effort was made torevive him. A physician was soon in attendance, He found the man’s skall terribly crushed and bearing evidences of having been battercd with a sand bag or some dull fhstrument, Blood flowed from a hole in his head and the life was going fast when medical attendance was procured, Barr was finally resuscitated sufliciently to admit of his explanation of the affair, Much to every- body's surprise he refused to state how he had come by hig wounds or who had inflicted them, He declared that the whole world could not induce him to disclose the secret of the affair, Tho authorities, however, avowed a determination to investigate the mystery, bub | thus far little bas resulted from their efforts. A COLORED WOMAN FRIGHTFULLY CUT WITH A RAZOR, Susan Palmer, a colored woman aged twenty-five Years, living at No. 45 Baxter street, was frightfully eut Jast night in the back, side and arms with a razor tn the hands of an intoxicated colored female neighbor named Margaret Robinson. It appears that Susan was in a grocery store adjacent to her resi- dence, making some purchases, when Margaret entered, and, without a word of warning or the slightest provocation, attacked her from behind, slashing an open razor through her clothing and inflicting deep and ghastly wounds in parts of the body. The pro- prictor of the store hastened to the rescue of the wounded woman, and after considerable effort suc ceeded in disarming the would-be murderess. An offt- of the Sixth precinct was then called, who arrested the assailant, Susan was taken to the Park Hospital, where her wounds were dressed, A ghastly cut extending down the back, fully twelve mebes long, was the most dangerous, ‘Tlie right arm was cut in three places, and the left suffered from two figly diagonal wounds above the elbow, On her left side another deep and dangerous wound was found, extending downwards, and across some three inches, Altogether, the unfortunate woman was cut in such a frightful manner that ner escape with her life 1s looked upon by the physicians as remarkable, None of the wounds, possibly with the exception of the one on the back, are regarded, however, as of a fata) character. The wounded woman, when questioned as to the cause of the assault, could assign no reagon for the same other than intoxication on the part of her assailant. She had never, she stated, had any previous difficulty with the woman. The prisoner will be arraigned at the Tombs Police Court this morning. STABBING AFFRAY. At a late hour on Tuesday evening Messrs, James Peacock and Eli Haguo, of No, 251 Tyler street, Pator- son, were going home, when they saw a man named Alexander McCulloch, a moulder, beating his wife most unmercifully on the public street, They went to the Wwoman’s assistance, and rescued her from his brutality. They then proceeded on their way, but, it seems, were followed by McCulloch, who mubapquontly overtook them ina saloon in Market street. McCulloch succeeded in provoking a quarrel, during which McCul- loch turned upon Hague with a'large clasp knife and stabbed him on the left arm, inflicting a wound reaching from the wrist to the elbow and penetrating to the bone. He then turned and stabbed Van Honten in the shoul- der, inflicting quite a severe flesh wound, The wounded men’s injuries proved to be not of a serious character, and McCulloch was held in $500 bail to appear before the Grand Jury. A NOVEL MODE OF SUICIDE. Conrad Haule, of No. 936 First avenue, quarrelled with his wife last night, and, according to the police, got drunk in consequence. As the liquor commenced to have its effects Conrad conceived the idea of shuiltimg -off the mortal coil by means of a loaded pistol. The weapon being procured, Conrad prepared for the ordeal by placing it in an unheard of position—namely, direetly beneath his nose, with the inuzzleslightly penetrating one af his nostrils, The fatal moment having arrived, the desperate man_ pulled the trigger. His nose, although not blown off by the explosion, was considerably damaged. Conrad was locked up by the unsympathetic police in the Fifty-ninth street station house.
