NEW YORK HERALD, TUES DAY, MAY 18, 1875.— "FINANCIAL AND COMMERCL The Stock Market Tyeverish and Lower, GOLD FIRM AT Money Basy, Bonds Steady, and Speculation Without Important Feature, 116. WALL STRERT, } MONDAY, May 17—6 P. M, To-day witnessed @ renewal of the depressing Ifuences which commenced lass week, and there ‘Was not sufficient change at the close to indicate that speculation would sume & materially @iferent pnase in the near future.” The Wall street mind is unsettled, and the prevailing cis- position. is suggestive of a tendency to go short of stocks, especially those that are likeiy to be affected by the pending rai!road war. ‘The frank statement of President Jewett, of the Erie Com- pany, sat this great’ organization has been seriously afected by tbe contest, aud the ontlook whioh he describes, are not regarded as encourag- ¥q to other lines, East and West, which belong to the ratiway system. Hence it has been easy to wive'to the marks @ tone of weakness, and to cange a decline in prices that has resulted in the wimost ‘feverishness, Nevertheless it 1@ not im- probable that if @ very large short interest is miadé & reaction will occur and in the ouying movement thai follows a temporary advance will take place. We note at tne close of the market & jetion, Tne most uctive stock of the day was Lake Shore, of wmeh abont 76,000 shares were sold, the opening figure being 68, the highest 6814 and the closing 6734. Monnay, May 17—6 P.M. ‘The merchandise Markets were generally dull and irreguiar, but there were some few excep- tons. There was very little activity im any de- partment, however, and there were few instances where the markets were firm. On ’Change the flour market was quiet, but steady. Wheat was quiet, but comparatively firm. Corn was in mod- erate supply and bigner, but the market closed lower, with the advance partly lost. Oates were speculated up to a still higher pomt, Whiskey was also decidedly higher. Pork was irregular and lower, but a good business was done. Lard was easier, but quiet. Petroleum was quiet and firm. Naval stores were quiet, Cotton on the spot was inactive. Gun- nies were quiet. Corton on the spot war inactive, with the tendency of values in buyer's favor. ‘Ihe policy of exporters was evidently to remain out of the market till after the Liverpool holidays, and only a few low bids came from this claes of buyers. Spinners limited purchases to ac- tual wants, although we have noticed today peveral despatches trom Eastern mills asking for types of cer- tain round tots which are onthe market, After ’Change we heard of no considerable transactions Futures in the absence of Liverpool advices opened weak, and the early months lost 1-iéc. ‘Ihe later months lost ic. The crop accounts were better, to which fact was attmbuted 1-l6c. of the loss on the remote mouths, which were oflered with comparative freedom. ‘The market was abont quiet and steady at the, glove. al fattons were a8 tollows:—M ‘2e. 16 } #16 L160. The jeature of most prominence on the street yesterday was the increased impetus given to the bear movement dumng the latter part of last week, there being a general pressure to sell, As | naual, under such circumstances, the tone of the | street is almost universaily bearish, although there are some who hold to the opinion that the movement on the part or the leaders is only a feint to induce a larger short interest, upon which they can more readily nnioad the large | amount of stock purchased In creating whatis now spoken of figuratively as the recent Bo- nanza excitement. @ market would seem to be in jnst that condition where tactical skill bas the Jargest apportunity to win fame and money, while it is aiso well to bear in mind Napoleon’a maxim that “Heaven js on tne side of the heavi- est artillery,” which in this case means the largest bank account. Outside of the *traggie on the floor of the Stock Exchange there was but littic on the street to excite public atrention in she way of special news, The expected dectsion IN THE MATTER OF THB UNION PACIFIC was not rendered, despatches from Washington, however, promising it for to-day. Tuts is the aeci- sion, it will be remembered, which involves the va- ldity of the ciaim set up by the government for the payment by the company of intereaton the sabaidy bonds to the extent of one-half the government account with the road for transportation. The decision im this case will, of course, involve tho liability of all the otner roads. To Union Pa- cific an adverse @ecision would, it 1s said, create or determine a present Mability of $1,000,000 and nearly $500,000 each subsequent year, The other Pacific roads are pFoportionately interested, viz.—the Kansas Pactfic, toalarge amount, The roads west of Ogden have less interest in (he mat- ter. MORE ANTAGONISMS. The existing relations, which are said to be not of the most /riendly nature, be.ween Russell Sage, Vice President, and Alexander Mitchell, Presi- dent of the Milwaukee and St, Paul Railroad, was the subject of current gossip upon the assertion that the latter bad obtained a control of the cap ital stock of the company sumMicienrly to dictate the new direction at the fortucoming election, 1¢ being argued, ergo, ne will oust nis opponent. Wallstreet has no fine distinctions to draw in such matters, with it nothing ts so successful aw success and the weaker man goes to the Waly, STREET ADVICKS, Advices were received on the street yoaterda) from Montgem sey: Als, to the eifect that the Chancellor has denied and overruled the motion of Branch Sons and others, to be made parties to the proceedings jor the saie of the Western Rau- road and have the sale set asiie, Other advices were received from Chicago to the effect that John M. Roundtree, County Attor- ney, has received notice irom the attorneys of George Nebecker in the suit 01 said Nebecker against THR DANVILLE AND VINCENNRS: RAILROAD‘ that they would to-day (yesterday) move in the United States Court to extend. the’ injunction in the above entitled case to the waole amount oF taxes assessed against the railroad company for the year 1874.
