10 NEW. YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 1875—TRIPLE SHEET, FROM OCEAN TO OCEAN, Progress of the Interoceanic Canal Surveying Expeditions. THE PROBABILITIES OF A FAVORABLE RESULT ae Limita of Inquiry Narrowing Fast—Economy, Distance and Feasibility— Encouraging Fea- tures of the Aspinwall-Panama Route— The Operations Drawing to a Close—News from Darien, Garon SraTion, UNITED Staves STRAM- Sniy COLUMBIA, March 24, 1575. It wa pity St. Patrick did not look this way in his travels, The country of which he is the ven- — erated patron has long claimed immunity from egukes and other unsavory intruders, for the holy man sent them about their business at an early period of the Christian era, and their sentence of everlasting banisnment, it is said, has never since een commuted. ican well imagine, then, how pleasant it must be to start outon an undertak- ‘mg, whether it be for sport, profitor the benefit of the whole human family, with the consciousness ‘that the potsonous familiarity of both winged and ¢rawitng monsters will not be among the troubles to be met with. Profane language, | am compelled to say, w frequently provoked in this part of the American Continent; but I feel convinced that the bright recording angel can smile as well as drop @ tear, and that, In view of the UNTOLD ANNOYANCES ‘Mmetdent to a tramp through a tropical jungle, the heavenly ledger wil! show no deficiency on she @epit side of the United States expeditions now wurveying for an interoceantc canal. Be this as tt may, the work of determining the feasibility of @ route of water communication be- ween Aspinwall and Panama bas not been Unattended with at least some of the diMculties which markea the original survey for the railroad, ‘nd those who have ascended the Chagres River 4m times gone by can, to a degree, appreciate the character of the examination which has been BO vigorously prosecuted since January last. Never has any expedition been conducted with more SMOOTHNESS AND RAPIDITY, and {certainly know of none in which the par- ues selected for such enterprises took deeper in- | terest or manifested more willingness to undergo hardship and privation for the achievement of an object which cannot but enlist the attention of the world at large. There has been no delay from the start, and in a few weeks the main fact, as to whether a practicable and economical route ex- iste, will have been determined. So far the re- sults have been extremely gratifying and beyond the anticipations of those who confidently pre- dicted success. One important feature of te ex- pedition will be the settlement for all time to come of various points in dispute, innumerable Sheories as to rival routes and other mteresting | ta, concerning which so many unsubd- @tantiated statements have deem made. The residents of Panama and Aspinwall e always stoutly maintained that tne proposed Hine contiguous to the railroad was the shortest, cheapest aud best, and that it offered more ad- @ vantages :nan any which had been discovered. This was, of course, avery natural supposition, | Dut one which would require more than an ord+ Mary assertion for its verification. I have no Goubt the good and law-abiding population of bose remarkably enterprising places would re- Bard with feelings of mortification the commence- Ment of actual work for an interoceanic highway @isewhere before the merits of the Aspinwall- Panama line bad actually been tested. They con- tended that during ail the surveys ordered by the United States government this line had been completely ignored; not because its various aa- Vaniages were unknown, but owing to AN UNFOUNDED PREJCDICR which existed against it, Is was, therefore, Lo e8- tablish ite Claims to general recognition that tne present expedition was organized, and the pr vailing impression is tuat sue effort now being | @ade to solve the important probiem will be re- warded wiih gratilying results. Beyond question the terrible aificulties encountered in the con- struction of this raiiroad had nota little to do witn Sbe bias against any other attempt to open up the edjrcent land, but this country has to some ex- tent been divested of its formidable character, end the experiment which has thus far been con- @ucted so manfully cannot but prove adv tageous. Troe, Humboldt was not particulariy struck with the prospects in this direction, for, alter ajourney from Porto Bello to Panama, he ‘ought that the expectation of acaual whicn, lime @ pass or strait soould go from sea to sea, ought to be completely abandoned. more accurate investigations, however, have proved these views to be mistaken. So long ago as 1670 toe pirave Morgan quitted bis hauuts among the West India wiands, where he bad col- lected 4 BAND OF BUCOANEBRS, with several ships, and sailed to Chagres. Here he Jem his vessels under a guard and proceeded in Gloops up the river to Craces, about Amy miles from ita mouth, where be landed and marcned to Panama, and, baving overpowered the garrwon, be wok, plundered anda burned the city. Tue pirates then departed, laden witn the spoll, and reached the mouth of the Chagres with a pro- Modern sod | @igious booty, taking with them a large mumber | ‘of prisoners, who Were ransomed in a lew days afterward. There certaialy could not then ve many obstacles to overcome, or such a jorce could BOt have accomplisued such an enterprise. Recent sarveys, however, show that there is very litte water at the mouth of the Chagres to-day, so taat for salling purposes this is comparatively useless, sithougd, of course, the natives continue to ply ‘their canoes upon it; but as 4 means oi supply it is ai] and everything to the proposed enterprise, for it is from the Chagres that tue water mast Gow to feed the main reservoir. And it is satis- factory to state, in this connection, that, after curate and faithful investigation has gone, the route by way of NICARAGUA STANDS FOREMOST in the opinion of those competent to judge, though it remains to be seen whether that from Aspin- Wall to Panama will surpass itin point of cost or feasivility—distance, of course, being largely in favor of the latter. It wail be observed, then, that once this survey ts completed the important task intrusted to the oMcers of the expedition will be at an end.4 I haye already intimated that the sup- ply of water is to De found near the head waters of the Chagres, ana that it is five times more than is ne ary for the requirements of the proposed canal. There are to be tweive locks on each side of the divide, including a tidal lock at each end of vhe line, What seemed at first a difficulty was the selection Of asite for,an aqueduct by which to Gross the Chagres, bat after thorough examina- tion it was finally located in the vicinity of Mata- chin, ‘The line of survey from Obispo to Panama was completed over a month ago, and there them remained less wan half the work to bring the investigation to aciose. Up to the preseut writing the survey has presented no seri- ous engineering diMculties, On the contrary Mr. Menocal expresses himself agreeably surprised at the absence of those ovstacles which rumor had prepared him to encounter. In an undertaking of this Kind the existence of this railroad Is, of course, ignored since the proposed route crosses the track in two or more places, and should the canal ever be constructed by either the govern- ment or private capital, the iron horse which ow traverses tne line would probably have to be ais- pensed with. Howpbeit THIS PURPOSB OF THE SXPEDITION is very clear ip itself, and when its labors shall have been completed we wili know whether to recommend this enterprise as one claiming uni- versal attention or lay tt on the dusty suelf ot ob. hvion. Meanwhile the oMcers are hard at work and whatever may be the iesue prospective suc: cessor failure lightens little the trying duties imposed upon them, From dawn to dark tbe work proceeds veneath a broiling sun; from dark to dawn sweet sleep is often wooed in vain, When Lieutenant Leutze, in company witn Lieutenant Very, Muster Green anda small force of natives, left the first camp at Matachin, and determined the side for the “feeder,’? they returned to Obispo station, to which point Lieutenants Colby, Moser, Tausig and Master Coffin had completed the line; the two parties were again separated, Lieutenant Leutze com- Manding the expedition from Obispo to a point near Gorgona, the remainder of the line from the Barbacoas to Aspinwall being run under the charge of Lieutenant Colby. Indeed, the work has been so weil mapped out that very little time has been lost since the day tue explorers struck the tcamp. A more THOROUGHLY DISCIPLINED ORGANIZATION never crossed the Isthmus, and since the com- mencement of the operations to this hour the most complete harmony has prevailed, True, she natives employed to cut through the jungie have at times proved tomewnat fractious; but there are remedies for these little symptoms of indolence ana ba temper, and aito- gether, apart irom the result involved, I regard this expedition as one of the best ever sent out under the auspicesof the government. Having previously given ali the requisite data as to the pian of the proposed canal across the Isthmus, I have only to add that the estimate, altnough not officially made out, will be much smaller than any which bas yet been suggested for any similar un- dertaking. Thus fact will assuredly bear its own weight; put 1t would be premature at this stage to dweil on propabilities, since the result of the expedition willsoon be known. Considering the climate and the malarial surroundings, the health of the surveying parties Las been tolerably good. As might nawrally be expected, there have been NUMEROUS CASES OF FEVER and several snakes have made overtures for acquaintance; but nothing of a very serious mature oas thus tar marred the progress of tne | work, which it is expected will De completed by the middie of next month. It is due to Dr. | Bramford, the surgeon atiached to this expedi- tion, to say that he nas been unremitting in his attention to the invalids of the party, and itis only to be regretted that they were not fewer in number. Dr. Cbiola, also of the United Stat Navy, has recently come to is assistance, #0 that @ medical officer may remai& with each party. Mesowalle Paymaster Clarke bas bad his bands ull in keeping up supplies, the prompt and regu- lar demolition of which latterly is at last sug- | gestive of fair health and good spirits. Commander Luli, accompanied vy Mr. Meuveai, bas just returned irom a survey of the Chepo Raver, about tuirty miles below Panama, but no important results were obtained. News has been received from the Darien sur- vVeying party. The work is being prosecatea with vigor and all nanas are weil. AMUSEMENTS. WALLACK'S THEATRE. The revival of Feulilev’s interesting arama, *Tne Rowance of a Poor Young Man,” attracted a large sudience to this house iast nigot. The idylic simplicity of the story and its quiet, graceful flow, formed @ strong contrast with tne lie and move- ment of the departed banghraan,” and the contrast last night was the more feit because the bustie and movement Mr. Boucicauivs play were still fresh in the memory oi the audience. It is altke creditable to the actors and the author that the sudden change was made with complete success, Tbe romantic love story, dispiay- ing deep insight into tne workings of | the boman heart, will attract the | dd wadience: nent, quiet, polished and gen- e consutational sentimentality win the pretty portrait of a ague a happy ex; temanlike, with so well in keept ‘As Wailack’s it nas the advantage of being pre- | sented with a completeness and effectiveness that | e Paris would find some diMenity in surpase- ing. I have previously detailed at iength the Main teacures of the presents survey of Com- manéer Lall, and the genera pian of operations which have been carriea out by Mr. Menocal, the ebief engineer attached to the expedition, aa weil ae by the other officers to whom the duty has been ermgned, It must not be inferred that, though ‘bis examination may prove in an eminent de- gree successful, and may realize tue most san- guine hopes of those who earnestly proclaim {ta Merits, the actual work of consiracting the canal Must necessarily follow. True, it Would be & con- summation devoutly to be wished; yet the fact Most Not be lost sight of that the present expedi- tion, sent Out under the auspices of the govern- ment, bas simply to determine whether or not A CHEAP AND FEASIBLE ROUTE existe on this part of the isthmus. it ts only in this Way that the limite of investigation can be broegnt within ‘row bounds and that In tne end » clear pathway may be opened for those | who, deeming a0 interoceanic canal the great denideratom of the present age, Will have ittie to do bat supply the necessary funcs for tts con- struction. The surveys made auring the past ten years bave not been without fruitful results, even in cases where the impracticability of im- aginary lines bas been decided upon. The Penuantepec and San Biss routes, for instance, Dave came Within this category, and there is Nketihood of another yet more prominent one aharing the game fate, to whieh, however, it would now be premature to refer. Indeed, it is generals conceded on pl hands thet. ao far am pe- | And where impulsive Marguerite fitting representative in Miss Ada Dyas? her perform- ance last evening in this character ais- played the charm of concentrated power in we expresmion of emotions which never sac Tifice dig- nity in seeking to produce effect.
