FINANCIAL AND COMMERCE The Steck Market Unsettled and Prices Fluctuating. GOLD LOWER—-114 1-8. Money Easy, Foreign Exchange Dull, Govern- mienis Steady. RAILROAD BONDS ACTIVE. Wat Srrrer, } THCRSDAY, Leo. f Measuring the stock market by its closing prices ‘yesterday und to-d)y it wil! be onserved tnat tie prevatling tenvency ts dowuward. Notwithstand- ing the earnest eifurts of those who have endeav- ored co infuse strength and confidence, they have eon checked by a stronger eleuient that repre- gonts an apparent belief in sril! lower feure: Pacific Mat continued ita erratic movemen ‘Wabash hus become more or less a gambie, under the adroit manipalation of an operator long ‘known to the siree!; Lake Shore is reported to have suiered a turther deciue in earnings for the third week in Feoruary amounting to $105,000; the New York Ceutral a loss during the same pertod of $190,000, aud a large iatiure occurted in she sugar trade. Thus INCIDENT AFTER INCIDENT contributed to the coniusion of judgment and aided the distrust tht vaso! la‘e attended the fluctuations oj the market, makiug it dificult for even well disposed capital to resist successfully the pressure of events, How iong this condition of affairs must be endured no man can tell, yet there can be little quesi.on that we are on the eve ofimpertant changes. They may not occur for thirty or sixty days. The great railways may carry pas- sengers, as they advertise, ‘rom Cincinnati to St. Louis for $1, and the utmost bitterness of compe- tition may manifest itsell jor the moment and be attended with great loss; he banks may con- tinue to extend their line of discounts und take Jor security depreciated paper; the small traders of the country may plead POVERTY and refuse to pay tielr Gebts, and, as a conse- quence, we may hear of iat!ure upon fazlure in the great commercisi ceuires, Sundry corporations may be driven into bankruptcy, or, as in the ins, stance of Toledo and Wabash, pass under the rod ofthe receiver; butin the end there must be & change. Our country may go vackward for a while, because we Lave some penalties to pay for past rashuess and exiravagance; but reaction must follow—‘oliow somehow and follow some- ‘time. The laws of trade are unchangeable. Vio- dated, they oring their own punishment; but in alithe history of the world this punisument has veen succeeded by stricter voedience, aud the dappy Consequences of good benavior. THE MARKST.
