Mr. Oloffson, of the Icelandic Colonial Commis- sion, consisting of the Olofyon Brothers ana Mr. Bjorson, arrived here at four o’clock yesterday afternoon, from the coast of Alaska, in the United States steamer Portsmouth. The steamer sailed from were on the 16th of last September, for the special purpose of cruising along the Alaska coast, to afford the Commission opportunities for inguir- ing into the attraciions of that cold conntry. The Commission undertook the work in the interest Of the Icelanders who emigrated to the vicinity of Milwaukee, Wis, aud tear the citmate uncon- genial. ‘Ine cruise was interesting in many respects, On the morning of the s4th o: October the steamer entered Vook’a Inlet under a clear, cold sky. Toe mountains on every side were covered wita snow, and the majestic volcano lilimna was in active operstion, Arun of sixty miles through the inlet, iu lautude 60 deg. 21 min., and the anchor was cast at St. Nicholas, The Commissioners jelt the ship and explored the surrounding country for miles in nen direction, ‘The result was unsatia jactory. ng northwest wind prevailed, and there ere Occastonal heavy falls of snow. The land was barren and marshy. The Kainai In- dians, of which there were two settlements, were the only inhabitants, and how they continued to live was @ mystery. ‘hey were slovenly ana dirty. The colonists left the island with de- pressed hopes. On the 22d of October sail was made for the island of Kodiak, 200 miles down the coast, and they made that port on the 2itn, Save an unusual stress of weather, that caused the Portsmouth to lay o during the first n'ght out from bt. MURDEZED BY OHINAMEY. A Friendless Old Man Cruelly Despatched for a Trifling Sam. [From the San Francisco Bulletin—Noy. 23) A shocking murder was discovered y morning in San Mateo county, at a point between Schoolhouse station and the Twelve-mile station on the San Juse railroad, on the ranch of Owen McManus, The victim wasan old Irisnman who had been employed for several years by the italian garaeners in the locality, and who was known by no other name than Johnny. He was baatesae! demented and always refused to occupy bed, being accustomed to sleep on the hay in a Sua barn on Mr. McManus’ premisea. Yesterday Morning his body was Seroxered lying bear bis usual p.ace of repose, tr pped of clothing and terribly mutilated yu ting. His death was immediately caused by cutting his throat, ail the large blood yeasels of the neck and windpipe being severed, and from the tact of a long-bladed sheath knife being found in one of his hands it was first suppusea that he had committed suicide. This theory was abandoned, however, on the cir- cumstance appearing that his clothing had been carried away, and several severe wounus about bis arms and legs showed that he bad been at- tacked while lying down, and bad attempted to shield himself irom tne deadly thrusts of tue assas- sin. It was also ascertained that the deceased had Dever possessed such a knile as the one discovered, and it was quite evident that the weapon had been placed in his hand alter death by the murder, to give the supposition that ne had accomplished his own end. ter in the pantaioons belonging to the deceased were found by the Faliroad track, nearly @ mile from the scene of nis dei the pockets being cut out.
