Esra pert cee nee '|meeting of Friends of St. John’s Guild at the Chureh of the Holy Trinity Last Evening—The Work Dur. img the Winter and How It Must Be Done. There was quite a large and fashionable attend- ance of ladies and gentlemen at the Churchor the Holy Trinity, Madison avenue and Forty-second street, lastevening to listen to addresses con- cerning the means to be employed to succor the | deserving poor during the coming winter. Amoug those present were Kev. Stephen H. Tyng, Jr.; Dr. Gothiel, of the Temple Emmanuel; Rev. Alvah ‘Wiswall, Master of St, John’s Guild; Frederick A. Conkling and Rev. Thomas S. Hastings. The meet- tug was opened with an appropriate hymn, which was afterward followea by prayer. The Rev. Dr. Tyng opened the business of the evening by brieny altuding to the object of the gathering, and, ater aying a few good words for St. John’s Guild, he introduced the Rev. Alvan Wiswal. The reverend gentleman said they had assembled together, with- out regard to race or creed, for a common object, and one which made such s meeting possible, To do unto others ag we would that we should be done by was @ sentiment that struck a common chord in the universal human heart. In making A GREAT CHARITABLE ENDEAVOR @ success, he said, two things were essentzal—a proper understanding of the objects to be at- tained, and action, thorough, determined, heart feit, prompt action. In this city, he said, there | ‘Were 28,000 tenement houses, in which there lived 115,000 families, made up of 576,000 individuals, It ‘Was an undeniable fact that the majority of these | 575,000 had to toil hard for their dauy bread, and in many cases two: or three in 8 famfly, though Working bard, found & very dificuts to meet al the demands upon them, The desire of each was to keep together at home, although thas home might be, in most cases, a simple garret or an un derground basement. In these tenements were two-thirds of the children in the community, these forming their impressions of men and things, and Teceiving into their minds ideas that would con. trol their own, but which might finaly CONTROL THE DESTINY OF THE ciry itact!. They were a power that had to be moulded, and it would not do for those who eonld aid in lift Tag them out of their aMftictton to refuse # helping hand, as they must themselves be tterested in their welfare, as upon it depended muck of their own in the iuture, They were as much a part and parcel of our soctal economy as were the rich, and “they could not be crowded imro asylams withont entire community. If fy abeee chet were destroyed what wouid be lente ¢ panic, he said, ali the trades were Tore or lees inactive, whiie many had become entirely paralyzed. It waa safe, thereiore, to put down the unemployed of eal kinds at twenty per cent, which would make a total of 20,000. Not all of them were actually sturving, but there were thousands of families who were pawning their clothing by piece-meal, ee kitchen utenails, everything, in fact, that could be pawned, to PROVIDE POOD FOR THE CHILDREN, while there were tn our midst whote families who did not taste food for twenty-four hours at a time, ‘and mothers as weak as their babes from want of proper nourishment. To treat them as criminals Would be @ heinous crime; and yet what a spec- < Was presented by thousands who had work — compelled to make shirts at fifty-five cents per dozen and pants at four cents per pair. How could they be treated aa criminals? The reverend geutieman then pointed out how dificult it was wo reacn the really deserving poor—that is, to reach them in such a way that the charity would Ot Cause numiliation, "ney seldom applied for assistance, and had to be sought ont py eae) and the best method to ges them was by thi system of house to house visitations. It required | great tact and delicacy on the part of the visitor When they were found to deal with them so as not to tnjure their self-respect, or to discourage their ability to become again self-supporting. No two families were alike, and each had therefore to be deait with in @ special manner, The [ac taste and experience of the visitor would ve kis best guide in his visits, and he said that no better sys- tem could be followed than that of THE HOUSE TO HOUSE VISITATION PLAN, Mr. Wiswall then minutely described the operandi 01 the St. Joun’s Guitd in seeking out the deserving poor, He showed how every block in every werd had tts visitor, and who saw that every needy family’s wants were promptly sup- plied in the matter of fuel and food, and where they werein arrears of rent. At the same time that the visitors gave charity they gave it ina Way that was not to the feelings of the poor, as one brother would ala another tess Sr Big They hel; those who were willing to themseives, {he sufferings of the poor in city, the lng poor, whe will not beg no ‘who are wilting to work, but can find none to do, were beyond the imagination of the rich, who had never been eye-witnesses of them, to con- ceive; and yet he aettines that the heroic epanrance, tee Christian displayed by one fa for Bonen the way the ly al small loaf was shared by one with the other the world of human wees and wealth of human virtues to be ate the midst of these eI ones were a of which words wouid fail ‘to convey an: Uasarae idea. The reverend gentie- man then recited several affecting incidents which had come to light during the experiences of the tors of St. John’s Guild in past winters; of how h er and moter and little ones tolled for one another and strove to outdo one another in as- suaging each other's bell each endeavoring torelieve the Kored by raking Og von manaelt or ag herwelt the burden of the family’s tribnidtiona.
