FINANCIAL: AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Unsettled and Heavy. MONEY 8 AND 81-2 PER CENT. Gold Firm at 111 14—Government and Rail- road Bonds Firm, THH FOREIGN SITUATION. WALL STREET, TaURSDaY, Nov. 19—6 P, ‘u.} ‘The stock market to-day continued to exhibit the fluctuations that have recently been noticed, the tendency at the close, with exceptional in stances, being downward. The lower priced varities, however, were not only in moderate de- mand, but indicated a considerable sustaining power, which assisted in keeping the market com- paratively steady. For the moment cliques and MaDipuiators, aided by the large foliowing of brokers on the floor of the Exchange, who deal for shemselves in lots of 100 or 200 shares, make the chief custom ofthe street. Both the bull and bear Darties for the nonce appear to hold full hands, and {tis a problem which of them shall first suc- cumb, With reference to the course of values, every reader must judge for himself from the Sigures that are published from day today. He Will take into consideration the condition of the various railroads; of local trade, manufactures and general commerce; of business prospects everywhere. He will compare the resulta of past years with those of the present; he will survey the tuture and see what new promises it offers; he will send his thoughts journeying among crops, which make wealth at home and abroad, for we are an agricultural coun- try, and calculate how mucn they are likely to contribute to the resources of the new year; and, so far as railway stocks are concerned, he will naturally apply his conclusions concerning trade movements in the measurement of their value. At 18 not our province to anticipate or prejudge; we merely recite the figures of the hour and leave the public to infer.
