1d NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1874.—TRIPLE SHEET. NEW HAVENS TROS¥ COMPANT Operations of the National Life and Tru:t Company. Petition of the Insurance Commissioner for the Appointment of a Trustee—The Liabili- ties in Excess of the Assets. New Haves, Conn, Nov, 19, 1874, Since the failure i 1871 of the Home Insurance Company of this city, with abilities of over one million dollars, With available assets of less than ten per cent; the failure of the banking concern or Scranton & Co. in 1872, owing the enor- mous sum of $700,000, with less ge00,000 with which to pay their indebt- edness; the suspension of the Townsend Savings Bank this fail, the appointment of receiv- rs and thelr published statement that the capital of the bank was impaired to the extent of twenty- ove per cent; the opinion has been expressed by zood business men that the devoted “City of Elms’ had suffered enough, ina financial point of view, to answer all purposes during the next decade. They flattered themselves that about all the doubtful banking, trust and insurance companies bad sub- sided, aud that the future possessed elements of smoothness and safety, in this velief there have been a few weeks of comparative quiet; but while assurance seemed tv be making itself doubly sure the dark rumors of doubt and distrust as to the management of the National Life and Trust Company force themselves upun their attention, and they are made to feel that another financial casualty is about to be added, The Orst intimation that something was wrong in the con- | duct oftne National Lie and Trust Company be- gan tocrop out alter the State Insurance Com- | gussioners made their report to the Legislature at us late session. Some alarm Was excited at that time, but the managers were abie toexplain and prevent the distrust whicn an in- vestigation Of its affairs must nave induced, and twas pot Uli after a new Board was appointed by Governor Ingersoll that any settied pubile cou- viction ot THE TRUE CONDITION of the concern was arrived at. About one month ago Mr. Johu W. Mr. Stedman, finding that there was no early prospect of a solution of the dificulty, returned to Hartford. Immediately on arnving at his office he wrote the application or the appomtment of a trus- tee.
