FAINANCAL AND COMMERCE [= e - -_—_———oOOeOoeOO ‘The Events of the Past Week— Trade Prospects. REVIEW OF THE MARKET. ‘The Course ot Money, Gold and Bonds. WALL Srnzer, SUNDAY, Nov. 15, sta. A review of the leading events of the past week ‘shows that a number of changes have taken place which sooner or later may influence general ‘markets. The journals published in the interests -of trade generally report 4 decided improvement 4m confidence and in the volume of transactions, This ts said to be demonstrated by the renewed sotivity in the ¥atious forwarding and transporta- ‘tion routes. The distribution of money in the *South aad West in tne movement of the crops has Dad its natural healthy effect, and an advance in ‘the bank rates at Chicago, Cincinnati, Loulaville and other points is not to be ignored as another encouraging commercial sign, inasmuch as it shows that the capital sent out from the great ‘Anancis! centres is periorming its mission among the classes Who produce, purchase, sell, consume ‘and thas give fresh impetus to the machinery of trade, THE NEW BNGLAND MANUFACTURERS, ‘who had been compelled to’ reduce their prodac- ‘tion one-third in-order to adapt themselves to the teat contraction that had taken place, report that the prospects of business point to the ne- ‘cesaity Of again running on full time.at an early day, The Unteed.states Economist says that “from thisuntil the 1st of January the preparations for business changes will be on an astounding scale, It has already come under our notice thatchanges ere contemplated in the dry goods trade ot this city tmvobving a total of $25,000,000, Changes toa corresponding extent are tn progress in other ‘trades. New firms bave peen reorganized on the basis of old ones, with an infusion of new blood, energy and capital. There are vague but ob- viously well founded anticipations of similar ‘movements in other important branches of busi- ess. For one thing, the resumption of specie payments by the federal government is regarded 8a foregone conciusion, taducing corresponding CHANGES IN BUSINESS, ‘Por-these alterations new men and capital aro required. Probably an estimate of $100,000,000 as the total amount of capital represented in the firms in this city undergoing a change would not wary materially from the correct figures. It is -diMicult to determine the effects of this unsettied | condition of affairs upon actua) business opera- | ‘tons, although there can be no doubt that they , exercise an important influence on quotations. At New Year's all firms desire to make as large | retarns of cash as possible, and this year the new mouses would naturally desire to make a favorable exhibit, ana would consent to deductions for ash, which, under other circumstances, would-not be entertained.” Another sign of the times is the advance in government bonds and some other securities that ‘re held abroad and have been returnea to America to be sold for foreign account. It means that the recent political changes have been ac- cepted by the people as an earnest of a brighter Ttuture and more substantial results, Banks and other fiduciary corporationg are buying these se- ‘curtties rather than lend their surplus money on callloans at 2 and 3 per cent, Prices having obeyed certain causes pecuitar to this country and ‘which could not have been exerted abroad, tne | temptation to the foreign investor has been to sell in this market. Bence a stiffening in ex- change, the shipment of and advance in gold. | MONEY. | Money on-call loans has been tn better request | and atsomewhat bigher rates, the bulk of business | being done at3a 3% per cent, with extremes ai2 | and4percent, Time loans were made at4\ a5 | percent. Prime business paper passed at 6 and 7 | per cent for acceptances and 7 and 12 per cent for | aingie names, The following were the last rates of foreign exchange:— Prime bankers’ ster ! : bills on London. 486 4.8636 4.8936 0 4.90 bankers’ d0....., 4.3535 04.86 4.89 9 4.3937 Prime com. sterling do. 4.84 848534 488 24.89 Paria (bankers’)...... 6.164 85.15 6.18% a 611% ADEWEID ..--- 2s .c0ee 6164 B515 5.134 6.11% BWIBB...... 0+ -v200e2-+- 516% & 5.15 one Paercts Amsterdam......... 4142 41% 41% Hambarg..........-... 95 & 96, ws ‘3 9635 Prankiort. 9644 & 9636 9 @ 9% Mya 90% Gs a 96% THB BANK STATEMENT. forthe week was regarded as encouraging, inas- amuch as it showed a large gain in the excess over the legal reserve, which of late has been decining. The principal change was in -specte, which increased $4,313,000, The change in legal tender is small. The loans have fallen $1,278,600, on ¢he average covering six days. The total reserve or the banks is now $76,413,200, or $18,914,760 more than the law requires. The ex- cess of reserve above legal requirement last week ‘was $16,338,025. The following Js a comparison of THB FOREIGN MARKET. Owing tothe continued loss of bullion by fhe Bank of England it was expected that the rate of discount would be again advanced this Week. It ‘was.not done, however, and the supposition now 4s that, as the money subtracted has been largely ased‘in the.semt-annuai settlements itn Scotland, ‘which occur-at this season of the year, an infow from. the Scotch banxs will be felt at an earlyday, @nd render any immediate disturbance of the market by the parent institution unnecessary. American securities, with the exception of Erie, have been comparatively steady in London, ak though not relatively as strong as in America, The Bank of France gained during the week $6,660,000 francs. HE STOOK MARKET continues to be.a field of speculation that may be described as active, considering the general con- -dition of the street, Prices, led by one or two stocks like Lake Shore and Western Union, have been advanced and at theclose yesterday were rm, in some instances at the highest Agures. of the week. Several of the lower priced securittea, Uke Northwest Common, Ohto and Missisatppt, Wabash and Onion Pacific received special atten- tion, and induces the hope, if not the belief, that the promises so industriously circulated concern- ing their future may be realized. It was said yes- terday, by those who seemed to know, shat the Sustaining strength of the market forsome time to come wonld be given by these cheaper stocks. The landing of the American end of the new cable || mow being laid is anxiously awaited by these who are expecting that its success will lead to impor- tant changes. The cable itself will announce its own completion. SaTuEDayY, Nov. 14—6 P. M. Though the merchandise markets were not marked by any very decidea improvement during the demand for many commodities and a cor- responding enhancement in value in numerous instances. Toward the close of the week there ¢ was considerable activity in some of the leading staples, and business assumed greater propor- tions as the days passed, a0 that the betief became quite general that merchandise had “touched bottom’ and thar the rebound was about to be felt throughout trade circles. However that may be, it ts certain that there was greater buoyancy and firmness in the market ror many kinds of merchandise than there haa been for some time. There are fewer indications that the protracted season of dulness and depression is seriously felt by the mercantile public now than wasthe-case some time ago. Some of the weaker ones have succumbed to the hard times as well assome-who had been regarded as among the stronger ones, but for the most part expenses were cut down and every preparation made to outride the storm, which it was feared woald burst, and in all prob- ability the preparation that was made to successfully weather the gale was the mesns of preventing it At all events basiness men are becoming more hopeful every day, though thelr hopefulness docs not cause any relaxation of the extreme caution which has been exercised tor some time, The gold premium has not varied essentially, and. havexerted noinfuence-on the value of merchandise. The-expors movement tn breadstuffs was moderate, but steadily increased. The actual clearances were light, but they reflected the bust- ness of the preceding week rather than that of the week last past. SUNDAY AT JEFPERSON MARKET. Thomas Costello’s ‘s Views on OfMctal Sweari —What Saturday Night Brings Forth. The wind blew vitter and sharp around the street corners of the city yesterday morning, and the poor, shivering wretches who had fallen into the clutches of the law, as they were marched to | the diferent Police Courts, felt keenly that now indeed had come “the winter of their discontent.” The Jefferson Market Police Court array wasnot ag large as usual, but all classes had their representatives, from the whilom gay, bus now crestiallen member of the jeunesse dorée, to the poor degraded mymphe du pave, who had sought to forget ber sorrows and shame tn the brief exDilaration of the cup. The witty son of the Emerald isie, rising superior to his misery, was there, and by his-side the lately eniranchised American of African descent, who vowed with fervor, ‘‘’Fore God, Jedge, ef you let me go dis time I’ll never tone anudder Grop. I swear it, Jedge; ‘fore God, I does.” Long before the opening of tne court the 4 tious began to arrive from the diferent precincts, The Eighth and Twenty-ninth precincts, from the character of @ large portion of their resident population, ag well as tho hearty welcome extended within their borders to | visitors whose means give them the entrée to the more pretentious places of dissipated resort usually furnish the principal quota of offenders. About eight o'clock, Jusuce J. Sherman Smith took his seat on the Dench and the roll was called. The Justice was clad in his {nvartably neat attire, and exhibited the cooinessand confidence which marks the magistrate who has made the law his study, and whom counsel cannot vanquish im ar- gument, though they may melt by pathos. Among the first arraigned was an uniortunate female, cvarged With intoxication, “How 1s this, Mary?” remarks His Honor, “you were before me yesterday for the same offence and 1 let you off with a fine o: $5. You must have hud plenty of money left.” Prisoner—Weli, Yer Honor, 1 only took 9 dhrap or two to quiet my parves, and I wint off ssnleep unbeknownst to meself. Judge—Well, Mary, as you require a resting place we will keep you for ten days this time, 80 you can enjoy ali the rest you need. Costello, the Coal Merchant. Nextin order came Thomas Costello. Thomas was in jovial mood and not at all depressed by the gloomy surroundings of a police courtroom. The frowns of justice, whether emanating from the Bench or typified by the stern, brass- buttoned, blue-coated myrmidon of the law, were evidently so familiar to Thomas as to have lost their awe-in- | spiring character, Judge (looking sternly at the prisoner)—Thomas, the officer says you were found last night in the Btreets in @ state of beastly intoxication. What have Neda to say, { anything, in answer to the charge Pr henererts divil a word of alte [ suppose in Shure officers niver schwear to a lie, barrin’ they’re brought down torninst the Commissioners lor getting dhrunk thimseives, and thin they don’t Foran ue what happened no more than other ple. “judge—Thomas, I don’t wish this levity. EE REIOREE Sty Yer Honor, only three or four mes. Judge—Three or four trmes & week, I suppose? Prisoner (iaughing)—No, three or four times & ! year. Throe hundred and Ere cee days, six one and Ofty-iour minutes, ‘oording to assrono- a endge (sternly)—You seem to be very merry over it. Perhaps you will not be so very merry tn a little while. Prisoner obits the same tmperturbabie coun- tenance)—Well, we might as well be merry ag sad. Sbure a schmile on that officer beyant wouldn't be any harm to him. Judge—What is your occupation, Thomas? Prisoner—Pm in the coal mercantile, Judge—You are a coal merchant or you put in coal, which? ue cinonete= Wy nib eyes Plaises yer Honor ptaises *fadge—we Thomas, you evidently require rest | and eerntiat: for your labors are arduous, | You may go down stairs for the present. Thomas went gayly below, in ae with his escort, singing the well known “Pm a rambler from Clare.” After these and @ nomber ofsimilar cases were | disposed of the more serious business was taken up. Shooting Affray in Mereer Street. Ambrose GriMn, @ young man about twenty years of age, residing at No. 223 East Eighty-sec- ona street, was charged with shooting Rovert Scott, aged twenty, of No. 819 Kast Eighty-thira street, ADdout halt-past twelve o’clock Saturday night Officer Barry, of the Fifteenth precinct, met three men, who inqatred where they could find a doctor, One of them was shot through the left breast. All three went to the station house, where thelr names were ascertained to be Ambrose Griffin, Robert Scott and George Gamble. Is ‘ranspired that they were all friends and had been drinking together in the liquor store at the corner of ‘Amntty and Greene streets, A dispute arising they repaired to the stdewalk, and Griffin and Scott botn drew re- volvers, the former shooting the latter, The m- jured man, after his wounds were dressed, became ‘very weak and was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he now lies in @ dangerous condition. Counsellor J. D, McClelland, who ap) for the prisoner, stated that the wounded man was un- ‘willing to make & complaint against the prisoner, the shooting having Peery accidental. The Justice, however, decided wo hold Griffin to ‘await che result of injuries, Exchanging Securities. Nichotas Reisen, of 88 Bleecker street, keeps a loan office.
