Upon entering the Exchange Hotel, in this eity, Isaw a lady fingering the piano in really artistic style, WO. upon my inquiring for a lady boarder, replied politely, “Walk in, sir; 1 am not act uaineed with the ladies of the hotel,’ and continued her dif. ficult music, This lady, 1 afterward learned, was none other than Mrs. Reid, the widow of the chief of the gang of Western stage robbers. Her hus band was killed recently by anocher of the gang for the $11,000 reward offered for Reid, dead or allve, by the Texan authorities Mra. eid, says the correspondent, upon receiving the news, drew a six-suooter and swore to take tho life of the assassin, She ia said to be highly educated, lives about nine miles from J)allas, and {requentl, visits the city, generally travelling as heavi armed as the member: the gang of which ber Dusdand waa suiel «| THE DRY GOODS TRADE. The Past Panics and Their Lessons. Business Improving—Good Prospects for the Future—Interviows with Some of the Prominent Importers, Auction- eers and Retail Dealers. What are called the “Laws of Trade’ have caused and will cause great discussions among Political economists aud commercial philosopners— the ebb and flow of the great tides of business, the causes which lead to panics in trade and finance, the cure for ull the ills that afflict the merchant—will ever be subjected to grave dis- cussion by thoughtful men who become students of trade problems, as others become students of medicine, These persons, however they may dif- fer on questions of policy in regard to business ameliorations, agree on certain facts in relation to the present situation of trade, the principal of which are as follows:— First—The country is passing{ through a crisis whtca only has been paralleled by the panics of 1837 and 1867; and that, while the “railroad anic” of last September affected the commercial terests but little at that tune, the storm burst upon them this spring and summer, resulting in shipwrecks all over the country, Second—That the liquidation was surely and steadily gotog on, and that before long doubtial and struggling firma would be eliminated trom the list of sound merchants, and trade assume once More & soand and healthy condition. Third—That as, in the history of former panics, it required about one year ana a hail for contidence to ve re-established, so tt was fair to assume that business was surely although slowly recovering its old tone and activity, and that next spring would find every channel of trade prosperous, wth—Vhat, as Wall street, the great money centre of the country, struck last year the first note of warning, so this autumn it Was the first to sound the tocsin of restoration, With the view, therefore, to ascertain how far these pleasant predictions of improvement were justified by the condition of the dry goods trade, and to lay before the readers of this journal intor- mation of go vital a character to the business com- munity, &@ representative of the HERALD was directed to visit the most PROMINENT HOUSES IN THE TRADE and receive from the principals or managers a synopsis of their views. The first establishment visited was the WHOLESALE STORE OF A. T. STEWART & CO., where, although the manager declined to give more than general !details, every sign of an active revival of business was apparent, The great open cases of ary goods were surrounded by buyers, and the clerks were busy in the various depart. ments of the warehouse. A COMMBROIAL AGENCY in Broadway was the next piace where informa- tion was sought. One of the proprietors of this bureau very courteously replied to HERALD inqul- ries, that he thought the wholesale dry goods trade of New York was flat, but the retail business quite active; yet, to get a broad and intelligent opinion, he should prefer to send to each section or branch connected with the agency throughout the country and trom that make 4 report; adding, in conciugion, that their business was more di- rectly concerned in getting the history oi individ- ual resposibility. MESSRS. WILMERDING, HOGUET & CO., ary goods auctioneers, were next visited. The gentlemen of this firm seem to have very decided Opinions of the situation, and did not hesitate to eXpress them as jouows:—"Tie present unsatis- factory condition of wholesale trade 1s, of course, the result of the war—general liquidation, causing great shrinkage in values, the untortanate trade strikes throughout the country and the mistaken Polley of the trades unions in adopting the eight- jour system Of labor, Yet we think, cousidering everything. business: is a3 every day upon & More sound basis and in a heaithier condition. Credits are Rear oehy changed trom what they were last year, and good live business houses are buy- Ing goods at eighty-five and ninety cents and sell- ing them at ninety-five cents, while those who are doing but little are standing out for larger rofits. There has been a depreciation in the value of loreign goods of twenty-five per cent from 1873, and although our imports decreased, it ‘was said, $11,000,000 1n one month this year, yet this was more apparent than real, considering the depreciation in value we mention. Tre ltqui- dation through which the country 18 passing we think oifers better security for @ sound business tor the 1ature.’”? MESSRS. JAMES F, WHITE & CO. are linen importers and commission merchants, They sell principally to jobbers. Upon an inquiry at their place of business—which was iull of Foods, but barren of customers—a clerk remarked that business was laiserably dull, and ag that seemed to bea good condensed report of the situation there the HERALD agent lett, to visit the immense dry goods establisnment of MESSRS. H. B. CLAFLIN & CO. This firm are well known ail over the country for the large volume of business they transact, and it was almost bewiidering to pass through the crowded aisles, between the open cases of goous, ana see the army of salesmen attending to what seemed @ regiment of customers, Making his way to the second floor, to the spacious offices of the firm, the HERALD representative was received by the son of the proprietor, who was in- dorsing a ream or two of checks and draits for deposit while @ clerk at his side was kept very busy with @ blotter. Mr. John Clailin, scarcely pausing at his work, informed his ‘interlocutor that business was Urst rate, collections good, no complaints to make whatever, and he thought the prospects for the 1all and winter very good indeed. MESSRS, EB. S. JAFFRAY & CO. were next visited, and One o/ the inteliigent mem- bers of tue firm said that he did not think the con- dition of the wholesale dry goods business entirely ee there were very good reasons ior his iact. It took eighteen months ior business to revive after the panics of the past, and it seemed that it Was impossibie that trade should be healihy and sound much before next spring. At that time, however, he looked for a good business tn all departments. There were many reasuns for the present stagnation; the railroad interests of the country are still under @ cloud; the cotton crop Wul be perhaps only three and one-quarter millions of baies (when much larger estimates were mado of the production) and the price is very low. ‘The wheat crop 1s immense in the West, but the ne of wheat in Chicago is only ninety cents and still jailing. “We are undoubtedly passing through a severe trade crisis, and I cannot see that we will have @ sound and improving condition before the spring of 1875.”” MESSRS. HALSTED, HAINES & 00., whose store seemed quite deserted of buyers, were next Visited. A junior partner of this house said he knew nothing about the trade, had no iniorma- tion to give, ana supposed because Messrs. Olafiin, Jatiray and others had talked to the HERALD ‘that they liked to see their names in the papers.’? The representative oi this journal left the junior partner to his seventeenth ceutury reflections, ‘AT LORD & TAYLOR'S wholesale establishment none of the principals could be ‘ound in the office; but the salesroom on the first floor had a Sabbacarian quiet that would have been pleasant for a hashish eater, but apt to give the dyspepsia to a New York merchant. But it must ve confessed that when the whole- sale houses were left behind by the HERALD ree porter the trade assumed a more cheerful aspect. IN GRAND STREET the small dealers seemed busy, and gossiping crowds O1 city women m middie life and country women looxing out lor bargains thronged the thorougbiare. THE BOWERY MERCHANTS compiained of duiness during the summer, but generally seemed satisfied that trade was improy- ing, a8 their city business was increasing every day. . CANAL STREET DEALERS conarmed the reports of improving fall business, and, indeed, the retailers generally concurred in the opmnion that the signs of the ie decidedly to a revival of the dry goods trade, THE SHOPS IN UNION SQUARE and upon Broadway, Gealing in ladies’ aress goods for fall and winter wear, reported, almost uniiormly, renewed activity. If the large tm- porters and wholesale merchants in the lower part of the town bad exiubited such healthy sigus ol trade as these the most inveterate croaker about a hard wioter and the scarcity of money would be compelied to hold his peace. : AITKEN & MILLER, importers of novelties in dvy goods, &c., said, in response to questions, that, certainly whtio their trade had not been what tuey conid have wished during the summer and early autumn, they had no reason now to compiaim. They were selling & great many wore goods than last Sep- tember and October, as at that time tle Wallstreet panic aifected the whole. trade and retrenchment was the order of the day. Now, however, they would report business improving, with a very healthy outlook, and collecttous were good. These gentlemen believed that there would still bo a weeding out process going on during the winter of weak houses, but they looked forward to the spring With bright anticipations of a sound business. ARNOLD, CONSTABLE AND CO., importers and dealers in jadtes’ fine dress mate- rial and fancy articles for women’s Wear, reported that the summer trade had been slack and the fall business backward, but that at present there ‘Was great activity in their establishment for city customers. Collections were good, &c. “In ae said one of the partners in @ jocular vein, there 18 wl, in the country we get it.” ‘This remark seemed to be borne oat by the sur- ra ‘The Gashjer’a Gask, was Be. vt sieged by fair, young creatures in ‘the most be- witching of street toilets, who Were tnrusting tm greenbacks on the busy clerks, each wil) ably Fepresenting some coquettish vit of fnery, & Weapon with which the heart breaking wrocess might be carried on. Strange Adventure of a Young Lady aB the Cliff House Road. (From the Datly Alta Calitornia,] A few evenings since a party of ladies and gem tlemen went out horseback riding on the CHM House road. The iore part of the evening wam quite pleasant, and the ride was much enjoyed.\ After spending about an hour at the Ocean House) the party started to return. In the meantime heavy, thick banks of fog had rolled in from the west, and objects in the tmmeutate neighborhood * were scarcely discernible. When the party reached tie hill overiooking the Clif House a race to the Homestead was proposed, and all accepted, It appears that one o/ the young jadies, Mise Fowler, a teacner in the Public school Depart- ment, Was wounted on an animal of considerable speed, and ver horse soon distanced the others and was lost to view. As soon as the rest of the party passed the Homestead they drew up ther orses, and anxious Inquiries were made for Mise Fowler. One of the gentiemen in the company and the young lady’s brother immediately started om abead, and reached the toil-gate without ba’ learned anything of her whereabouts. Tne gate keeper said thata horse had galloped through, &.lew Moments previous, but he could not say , Whether @ lady or a gentleman was the rider or whetuer tuere wasa rider or not. The rest of the arty soon came up, aud the ladies were senG ome under tue escort of one gentieman, and the Others started off to the young lady’s reside! the stable where the torses were obtained an other points. The horse had not returned to the stable, there were no tidings of the young lady as home and her relatives aud friends’ were almost distracted. While the friends of Miss Fowler were busily engaged tn looking tor her in the city sne was lying stunned and bleeding on the Clit House road, [t appears inat soon alter the horses started ior the race she lost control of the animal, and after running about a mile sue lost conscious- mess and fell from the horse upon the hard ground. How she managed to extricate her foot from the surrup she does not remem. ber, and can recollect nothing after ber fail untk she recovered her senses, with the exception of ® terrible fear which came over her when the horses of the party dashed past and over her. One of the hoofS of a horse struck heron the sfoulder an@ bruised her very much, At least an hour must have passed before she regained consciousness. She was wet through from the heavy fog, cold, shivering and miserable, with the blood from sev- eral cuts on her forenead covering her face, and her limbs and shoulders aching badly, In this condition she started to walk into town; but be- fore proceeding !ar she thought she might be going in the wrong direction. However, she kept on, and about two o’clock in the morning reached the residence of a friend in the Western Addition, where she Was comiortably cared lor and word sent to her home and imtends, The horse was found the next evening tied up to a post on Mise sion street, THE INDIANA BODY-SNATOHING OASE. {Special despatch to the Chicago Tribune from. Seymour, Ind., Oct 26.] The stolen corpse which was recovered yestere day was buried again to-day, the people attending en masse, It was one of the most aflecting funerals ever witnessed here. The excitement runs high, and hundreds of people are standing around upon the streets discussing the aubject. It has been ascertained that the wretch now im jail 18 a professioual boay snatcher, and nas engaged in the business in this neighborhood for several weeks. A Mr. Kelch, @ farmer, ene Jennings county, who hauled the corpse from tnis place to Hardenburg for stipment, and who is am acknowledged accomplice, was arrested to-day and brought in on the twenty minutes to ten tr: to-night, He was met at the depot by hundreds excited citizens, but no yioleace was attempted, though the feeling is fully as strong against him as the profeseional, on account of his eng: ing in the business right at home, as it were.
