EES Lee’ Business Improving—Good Prospects for the Future—Interviews with Someof the Prominent Importers, Auction- eers and Retail Dealers. What are called the “Laws of Trade’? havo caused and will cause great discussions among political economists and commercial philosopners— the ebb and flow of the great tides of business, the causes which lead to panics in trade and finance, the cure for ull the ills that afllict the merchant—will ever be subjected to grave dis- cussion by thoughtful men who become students of trade problems, as others become students of medicine, These persons, however they may dif fer on questions of policy in regard to business ameliorations, agree on certain facts in relation to the present situation of trade, the principal of which are as follows:— First—The country is passing{ through a crisis whitch only has been paralleled by the panics or 1837 and 1867; and that, while the “raiiroad anic’? of last September affected the commercial terests but little at that time, the storm burst upon them this spring and summer, resulting in shipwrecks all over the country, Second—That the liquidation was surely and steadily going On, and that before long doubtful ana struggling firme would be eliminated trom the list of sound merchants, and trade assume once more & soand and healthy condition. Thivd—That as, in the history of former panics, tt required about one year ana a hail for contidence to ve re-established, so 1t was fair to assume that business was surely although slowly recovering its old tone and activity, and that next spring would find every channel of trade prosperous, Fourth—Yhat, as Wall street, the great money centre of the country, struck last year the first note of warning, so this autumn it was the first to sound the tocsin of restoration. With the view, therefore, to ascertain how far these pleasant predictions of improvement were justified by the condition of the dry goods trade, and to lay before the readers of this journal intor- mation Of so vital a character to the business com- munity, @ representative of the HERALD was directed to visit the most PROMINENT HOUSES IN THE TRADE and receive from the principals or managers a synopsis of their views, The first estabiishment visited was the WHOLESALE STORE OF A. T. STEWART & CO., where, although the manager declined to give more than general !details, every sign of an active revival of business was apparent, The great open cases of dry goods were surrounded by buyers, and the clerks were busy in the various depart. ments of the warehouse. A COMMERCIAL AGENCY in Broadway was the next piace where tnforma- tion was sought. One of the proprietors of this bureau very courteously replied to HERALD inqui- ries, that he thought the wholesale dry goods trade of New York was flat, but the retail business quite active; yet, to get a broad and intelligent opinion, he should prefer to send to each section or branch connected with the agency throughout the country and !rom that make 4 report; adaing, in conciugion, that their business was’ more ul- rectly concerned in getting the history oi individ- ual resposibility. MESSRS. WILMERDING, HOGUET & CO., ary goods auctioneers, were next visited. The gentlemen of this firm seem to have very decided opinions of the situation, and did not hesitate to express them as toulows:—“Tie present unsatis- factory condition of wholesale trade 1s, of course, the result of the war—geueral liquidation, causing great shrinkage in values, the untortanate trade strikes throughout the country and the mistaken policy of the trades unions in adopting the eight- jour system of labor. Yet we think, considering everything, business is to every day upon & more sound basis and in a heaithier condition. Credits are scurcely changed trom what they were last year, and good live business houses aro 9 ing goods at eighty-five and ninety cents and sell- img them at ninety five cents, while those who are doing but little are stanaing out for larger rofits. There has been a depreciauion in the value of joreign goods of twenty-five per cent from 1873, and although our imports decreased, it Was said, $11,000,000 in one month this year, yet this Was more apparent than real, considering the depreciation in value we mention. The Itqui- dation through which the country is passing we think offers better security for @ sound business for the 1uture,”” MESSRS. JAMES F, WITITE & CO. are linen importers and commission merchants, They sell principally to jobbers, Upon an inquiry at their place of business—which was tull bed geen but barren of customers—a clerk remarked that business was miserably dull, and as that seemed to bea good condensed report of the situation there the HERALD agent leit, to visit the immense dry goods establishment of MESSRS. H. B. CLAPLIN & CO. This firm are well kuown ail over the country for the large volume of business they xe A it was almost bewildering to pass through the crowded aisles, between the open cases of goods, ana see vhe army of salesmen iets 3 to what seemed @ regiment of customers, Making his way to the second floor, to the spacious offices of the firm, the HERALD representative was received by the son of the proprietor, who was in- dorsing a ream or two of checks and draits for deposit while @ clerk at his side was kept very busy with @ blotter. Mr. John Clailin, scarcely pausing at his work, informed his ‘interlocutor that business was first rate, collections good, no complaints to make whatever, and he thought the prospects for the Jall and winter very good indeed. MESSRS, EB. S. JAFFRAY & CO. were next visited, and one o/ tne intelligent mem- bers of tue firm said that he did not think the con- dition of the wholesale dry goods business entirely satisiactory; there were very good reasons ior this jact. It took eighteen months ior business to Tevive after the panics of the pust, and it seemed that it was impossibie that trade should be healthy and sound much before next spring. At that time, however, he looked for a good business tn all departments. There were many reasons for the present stagnation; the railroad interests of the country are still under & cloud; the cotvon crop ‘wil be perhaps only three and one-quarter muons of bates (When much larger estimates were mado of the production) and the price is very low. ‘The wheat crop 18 immense in the West, but the price of wheat in Chicago is only ninety cents and still tailing. “We are undoubtedly passing through a severe trade crisis, and I cannot see that we Will have @sound and improving condition before the spring of 1875.” MESSRS. HALSTED, HAINES & 00., whose store seemed quite deserted of buyers, were next visited. A junior partner of this house said he knew nothing about the trade, had no iniorma- tion to give, ana supposed because Messrs. Clafiin, Jattray and others had talked to the HERALD that they liked to see their names in the papers.”” The representative of this journal left the junior partner to nis seventeenth century reflections, AT LORD & TAYLOR'S wholesale establishment none of the principals could be ‘ound in the office; but the salesroom on the first floor had a Sabbacarian quiet that would have been pleasant for a hashish eater, but apt to give the dyspepsia to a Now York mercbant. But it must ve confessed that when the whole- sale liouses were left behind by the HERALD ree porter the trade assumed a more cheertui aspect. IN GRAND STREET the small dealers seemed busy, and gossiping crowds oi city women m middie life and couutry women looking out jor bargains thronged the thoroughiare. THE BOWERY MERCHANTS compiained of duiness during the summer, but generally seemed satisiied that trade Was improy- ing, as their city business was increasing every day. e CANAL STREET DEALERS conarmed the reports of improving fall business, and, indeed, the retailers generally concurred in the opinion that the signs of the times pomted decidedly to a revival of tho dry goods trade, THE SHOPS IN UNION SQUARE and upon Broadway, Gealing in ladics’ aress. goods lor fall and winter wear, reported, almost unmilormly, renewed activity. If the large im- porters and wholesale merchants in the lower part of the town had exiubited such healthy sigus of trade as these the most inveterate croaker about a hard wioter and the scarcity of money would be compelied to hold his peace. . AITKEN & MILLER, importors of novelties in dry goods, &c., said, in response to questions, that, certainiy who their trade had not been what they could have wished during the summer and early autumn, they had no reason now to complain, ‘they were selling & great many more goods than last Sep. tember and October, as at that time the Wall street panic aifected the whole. trade and retrenchment was the order of the day. Now, however, they wouid report business improving, with a very nealthy outlook, and collections were good. These gentlemen believed tnat there would Btill bo a Weeding out process going on during the winter of weak houses, but they looked forward to the spring with bright anticipations of a sound business, ARNOLD, CONSTABER AND CO. importers and deal ‘Was great activity in their establishment for cit; customers. Strange Adventure of a Young Lady am the Cliff House Road. (From the Datly Alta Calitornta.] A few evenings since a party of ladies and gem tlemen went out horseback riding on the Cid House road. The iore part of the evening was quite pleasant, and the ride was much enjoyed.) After spending about an hour at the Ocean House} the party started to return. In the meantime heavy, thick banks of fog had rolled in from the } west, and objects in the immeuiate neighborhood were scarcely discernible. When the party reached tie hill overiooking the Cilf House a race to the Homestead was proposed, and all accepted. It appears that one of the young iadies, Mise Fowler, a teacher in the Public School Depart- ment, Was wounted on an animal of considerable speed, and her horse soon distanced the others and Was lost to view. AS soon as the rest of the arty passed the Homestead they drew up their orses, aNd anxious inquiries were made for Mise Fowler. How she managed to extricate her foot from the stirrup she does not remem- ber, and can recollect nothing after ber fall ant she recovered her senses, with the exception of ® terrible fear which came over her when the horses ot the party dashed past and over her. One of the hoofS of a horse struck heron the sfoulder and bruised her very much. At least an hour must have passed before she regained consciousness. She was wet through from the heavy fog, cold, shivering and miserable, with the blood from sev- eral cuts on her forehead covering her face, and her limbs and shoulders aching badly. In this condition she atarted to walk into town; but be- fore proceeding lar she thought she might be going in the wrong direction. However, she kept On, and about two o’clock in the morning reached. the residence ofa friend in the Western Addition, where she was comiortably cared lor and wo gent to her home and inends.
