FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Wall _& Dull Day on street. Interesting Statistics Concerning the Balance of Trade. ‘Stocks Unsettled—Railway Mortgages Quiet—State Bonds Neglected. GOLD 109 8-4. WALL STREET, } FRIDAY, August 28—6 P.M. “The stock market disappointed most of the ‘quidnuncs by exhibiting less weakness than was looked for, being moderately firm. The fa- miliar theory that there is nothing in the market to put stocks up, receives a daily negation im the difficulty experienced in putting stocks down, for the reason that if there was nothing to sustain them they could not ‘80 successiully contend against the pressure con- stantly being brought to bear upon them. Some- thing of this latent strength, this reserve force, may, perhaps, be gathered from the subjoined ta- bles, which are made up ‘rom figures supplied by the Washington Bureau of Statistics, They show ‘the balance of trade to be raplaly turning in our favor, while the development of American enter- prise in the direction of self-support is twofold. Hunt, | occupied their morning hours in arranging a pro~ gramme for a busy day’s visiting. Mayor John- ston expressed himself displeased with a brie! are ticie pubished in a New York cvening paper of Thureday, and siid that if the courtesy of the great metropolitan city of the East extended | only so far he would mucn prefer to return as soon | as possible to the West, where strangers were ac- customea to be treated with o different kind of hospitality and good feeling. The Mayor ta |@ gentieman ot about {orty-tnree or per- haps forty-flve years of age, extremely polite and affable and the first democratic Mayor of Cinctunati within the past twenty years. When he visited this city for the first time on Thursday he was not aware that it was custo mary for civil officials from another city to call first upon the Mayor of New York and tender him their respects. The whole | delegation theretore proceeded, without calling at | the ity Hall, to their quarters at the Fifth Avenue Hotel. It is Mayor Johnston's wish that this poiat should be explained in this particular manner. Mayor Havemeyer, on the other hand, did not wish to be 1ound Wanting in courtesy toward the civil oMcers of Cincinnati. He visited them at th hotel on Thursday and personally invited them to view the public Institutions and whatever else they wished to sep within the city its. TI iew York were spending their vacation time, and they therefore couid noc be expected to receive and accompany them. In addition to this Mayor Havemeyer sept to them, yesterday morning, Commissioner Latmbeer, of the Charities and Cor- rection Department, tendering them a further tnvi- tation to go with him down the Bay and over to the islands to see the prisons, asylums and hoa- pitals, together with any other places of interest they might feel a desire to take notes of. The in- vitation was thas an oficial one, tirough Mayor Havemeyer himsel). The heads of the different | departments also tendered cordial invitations to the visitors, so that on the whole they must feel flattered at the attention paid them, The civil oMciais of the “Queen City of the West” have, however, declined any formal recep- tion for che finest from the city goverament ior several good reasons., They say that since their arrival in New York they have as @ body separated constderadly. Some have gone to see old irienda and spend a few pleasant days with them and others: Phave gone to Long Branch to see the sea cis and surging billows and watch the | leaders of fashion parade their vanity alo! the beach, A large number are, however, stil to be seen around the hotel resting their weaned limbe alter a most enjoyaole tour, In the after- noon and evening Mayor Johnston and iady, to- gether with several others, made a visit to Cen- tral Park. The party who went to Long Branch comprised Alderman D. J. Mullaney, John L, Thom- son, President of the Board of Fire Commissioners. Adam A. Kramer, Park Commissioner; Fire Com- missioner C. J. W. Smith, br. J.J. Quin, Board of " | Health, and Jackson M. Noble, Superintendent of the Street Cleaning Departwnent. Under these cir= cumstances it would be impossible for them as a@ pody to accept Mayor Havemeyer's invitation. In the afternoon, about three o’clock, Mr. John- ston was made the recipient of a large basket of most beautiful and sweet smeiling flowers irom the Trenton Fire Department oi New Jersey. It was gratefully received, and the whole party gathered ground it, expressing themselves exceedingly well pleased and honored, It is possible that the tourists will visit our public institutions to-day, as they intend to remain at their present quarters until ave clock this evening. They affirm that did not expect any public ovation and that the telegram to Mayor Havemeyer from Panadeipnes was eamerely an act ol courtesy on the Fag of Mayor Johnston. Every public department in the city of Cincinnatt js represented among the delegation, and their tour has been brought about vhrough an invitation tendered them by the Penn- sylvania Railroad Company.
