WALL STREzr, Tavaspay, May 46 P.M } Uniess the Senate Currency bill, now under con- sideration in that body, contains on its final pas- wage by the House the clause providing for re- @emption, and for the accumulation of coin to the end that the country may eventually resume specie payment, Congress is wasting time, for we shall then be no nearer the grand object in view than now, Practicaily the bill means both expan- sion and contraction—expansion of the bank note eurreney and contraction of legal tenders, It will answer the demands of the advocates o1 free bank- tg and ofthe infiationists. It will afford opportu- nity to capitalists, here and elsewhere, to engage tm banking under the most liberai provisions; but ‘without specific restrictions upon the fresh issues Permitred, without giving to our “promises to pay,” new as well as old, the strength and credit ‘that attaches to ultimate redemption, the bill will Prove nearly if not quite as faulty as its vetoed predecessor, RAILWAY EXTENSIONS, Some of our large rallway companies have failed to learn the lessons taught by the recent panic, | ana instead of retrenching are, like the national government, rushing into fresh expendiwures, | While the mass of the people are engaged in solv- | ‘ng the problem “how to save,” from kitenen to | Parlor and counting room, Congress, withou: scarcely the form of debate, is passing bills of | appropriation that will swell our outiay for the | year to a figure that bas not been equailed since the close of the war. So, too, with not a few rail- road corporations, which, all unmindiul of the de- pressed condition of the industries of the country, are seeking to extend their lines for connections through sections which are aiready fully supplied. Tt is a question well worthy of consideration whether the present condition of the country jus- tifles the development of any great railway enter- prise, and whether, being developed, it will not be # long time before its projectors are rewarded with Profit, especially in view of the great compewtion already established, THE MONEY MARKET. Money was freely offered to-day on call loans at Jand 2 per cent, but the wants of borrowers were mot sufficient to absorb the capital seeking em- ployment even at these figures. Foreign exchange was dull, but bids fair to be again advanced. The shipments of gold still continue, and more are said wo be engaged. The opening was made at the depressed prices of the close yesterday, and, save afew temporary fluctuations of from % to % per cent, continued to exhibit weakness. The causes Reretofore described still prevail, and they will do So until some bright morning a@ half dozen bold operators with good financial backing enter the field for a bull campaign and will force prices up- ward as rapidly as they have been pressed down. There 18 yet nothing im the market to provoke outside buying; for, while prices seem to be low, operators have go olten been caught under similar conditions and have lost their money that they are not encouraged by a situation which hourly gives evidence of its subjection to individual power. THURSDAY, May 14—6 P, M. The trade movement continued slow in nearly all departments aud values rather favored the buyer, though there were @ few important excep- tions, Atthe Produce Exchange flour was dull and heavy. Wheat was less active, but prices were without decided change. The receipts were heavy, but the bulk of them went to fill contracts, though the offerings were liperal, Corn was in demand and prices advanced, the market closing strong at the advance. Oats were steady, Whiskey was firmer, Pork was quict. Lar@ was irregular, closing heavy. Groce- be ) ries were dull and nomial, particularly coffee and sugar. Cotton met with a Jair trade, both “spot” and “uture,” and the market was firm, | Pecroleum was dull, easier and to an extent nomi- | nal. Naval stores were quiet, with spirits ruling easier and rosin about steady. Freights were easier and quiet for accommodation on the berth, but there was quite a large business in the chartering line. Corrox.—Aside from the sale ot one line of 900 bales for export there was nothing doing in “spot” cotton except ‘@ small business, in lots, for spinning purposes. The mar- ket, however, continued very firm, holders genérally d¢é- manding a still further advance, For tuture delivery iair business Was consummated st irregular figures, market closing, however, at about yesterday's rates.
