_ basis the element of specie redemption, PINANCLL AND COMMERCIAL. The Clamor for More Currency— Its Causes and Results. AN ACTIVE LONDON MARKET. Gold Being Weighed in the Balance--- An Uncertain Condition. MONEY ABUNDANT. The Stock Market Weaker—De- cline and Doubt. WALL STREET, } Wepnespay, April 20—6 P, M. People who are so clamorous for more currency seem either to torget or ignore one !act—to wit, that there is already an abundance of money seek- ing sale investment and much that 1s lying idle because it cannot be thus safely made profitable. Our bank reports tell the whole story in a nutshell. Our factories running on half time or not running at all; our railroads carrying freignt but one way 4nd that at reduced rates; our tradesmen idle, Our consumers economical, our markets overflow- ing with capital—the supply always exceeding the demand. What can these salient tacts mean but that business, being overdone, has come to a standstill, andthat natural laws are now enforcing their supremacy over the speculative, the artificial and extravagant operations of the past few years? ‘The excess of production beyond actual demand has been arrested. Consumption beyond the limits of a wise economy has also been stopped, ‘While THB CRISIS COMPELLED CONTRACTION OF BUSINESS, it went still further in its healthful influences by wiping ovt much that was rotten, clearing the nancial atmosphere and establishing a new basis whereon the work of the future should be con- ducted. The borrower of money is naturally an inflationist. The Western Senator or member of Congress who has operated largely in real estate and found himself disappointed in his profits de- mands more currency as a possible means o1 re- lief. The poutherner, although he has nothing to give in return, for his lands are overtuxed and bis cotton pledge to factors months in advance, in- duiges in the hope that somehow the issue of more Money will replenish the exhausted pockets of his impoverished constituents. The Wull street spec- ulator pleads for expansion because 1t will swell his STOCK BALLOONS, and go through all grades and conditions of tnfa- tionists we find running an idea eminently selfish, G@nphilosophic and antagonistic tothe existing monetary superfuity. We repeat, our business centres are fuli of currency, our loanable funds @re in excess of the demand, apd beyond the Testoration of confidence—that Kob-i-noor of the Whole situation—nothing is requirea to secure Peace save a prudent increase of bankipg facilities and the honest fuldlment of the pledges of the gov- ernment. Let Congress place the currency of the country on a par with goid, and commerce will take care of itsel, Free banking judiciously ad- Ministered may, in the course of time, afford relief, Dut uniessthat reliei be attended by ability to re- sume specie payment every dollar of paper money Jasued will conduce to an inflation that will again ‘unsettle all values and result in terribic disaster. THE FOREIGN MARKET. Late London advices report the withdrawal of £210,000 iu bullion irom the Bank of Kngland to- day and the provadility that the rate will soon be advanced, The private advices of bankers on this side, however, do not corroborate the statement. Coneols are reported weak gt 925 a 92% tor Money and 92% a 92% on account, Erle closed weak at 31; a 31%. Money in open market is active and has strengthened. Five-twenty bonds, 1865, 1063; a 10654; do., 1867, 108% a 109; ten-forty bonds, 1043 a 104%; new fives, 104 a 10414; New York Central, 88 a 88%. Paris quotations place rentes at 691. 723¢c, Prices in Amsterdam are as follows:—Central Pacific first mortgage bonds, 794; Union Pacific do,, 71%; Union Pacific shares, 20%; Northwestern. preferred, 573g; St. Paul pre- Jerred, 503;; Erie shares, 81. The repeated with- Grawais of bullion from i THE BANK OF ENGLAND reported for several days past, and amounting during the week to £413,000, were loreshadiowed by an article lately published in this éo/umn, wherein it was described that the Bank of France, being engaged in the accumulation of coin, with a view to the resumption of specie payments, would natn- rally absorb some of the assets of the “Old Lady of Threadneedle street,” This process is now going on, and hence coin is escaping ‘rom England. It 1s also to be berne in mind that the 1st of May is @ settling day abroad, as it is here, and that all creditor countries, of which France is one—be- cause sife exports more than she imports—natu- rally draw upon “the banker of the world.’ Hence the activity in money that is described in London advices, and the report that there may be ap advance in the bank rate. Elsewhere money is easy and abundant. THE GOLD MARKET. Gold opened at 113, sold down '% per cent and up to 113, but closea at 1134;. The disbursement of the May interests and the considerable amount of gold that will necessarily be thrown upon the mar- ket are quoted as reasons for the present unsteadi- ness, if not absolute weakness, that is from time to time observed. On the other hand, there are nota few among the speculators who base their faith in the future strength of gold as whe result of Congressional legislation, fully believing that the President will sign no bil which has not as its ‘The rates paid for carrying were 3, 3%, 4,2 flat, 23 and finally 3per cent. A large influx of usable capital seeking in- ‘vestment will probably be felt soon alter the 1st of May, when dividends and interest will be frecly distributed vy ratlroad and other corporations. New York city itself wil! then disburse about $2,500,000 as interest on the city and county debt. From this and other sources there will be a pleth- ora of money in Wall street during the next Month. Foreign exchange was firm at 4.87 a 4.873¢ for prime bankers’ sixty days sterling and 4.90 a 4.9034 lor demand, A considerable amount of May coupons are expected here by tue incoming steamers, and the movement of gold thereby mecessarily entatled should stiffen toreign ex- change. The course of this market has been so like that Oi the past two or three days that it is scarcely necessary to make additional comment, By turns it was strong and weak, as if some superior power were playing with it and at will making figures on which to dispose of puts and calls, It was not @ market to invite contidence or induce outside buyers to speculate for more than “a turn.” Even the habitués of the street fought shy of cer- tain stocks wherein it is believed combinations exist, and the utmost caution was observed in carrying them overnight, lest the sient influences of twelve hours should produce another of the sharp changes that have so suddenly and repeat- | edly occurred during the paat -two weeks. It 18 useless to speculate as to the future, for opinion is thorougniy divided as to possibilities, and to predict might only be to misicad, The transactions to-day were as follows:—Western Union, 74,250 shares; Union Pacific, 38,220; Wabash, 4,700; Pacific Mall, 33,390; Obio and Mississippi, 3,200; Yew York Central, 12,600; St. Paul, 6,200; Lake Shore, 33,175; Hanni- bal ana St. Joseph preférred, 900; do, common, 8,200; Erie, 4,600; Delaware and Lackawanna, 1,200; C., C. and L. ©., 3,560; Rock Island, 5,280; Northwest common, 12,100, The sum total was 240,690 shares, The close of the market brought out a good many sellers, 80 that much of the ad- Vance was lost and the final dealings were heavy. The decline ranged from +4 to 2 per cent, nearly all of the speculative stocks being sufferers, especially Erie, which fell off in responre to the weakness reported in London, The greatest de- cline was in Western Union. THE PRICES. Western Union opened at 74%, advanced to 75 a 7534 @ 75%, and thence declined by fractions to 74 a 13% ; Now York Central sold at 98% a 99 a 993; a 98% & 983, a 985,; Erie commenced at 36, receded to 35% @ 34%, and closed at 345;; Hannibal and St. Joseph common opened strong at 30 and moved up to 8134, but ended at 303%; the preferred stock closed at 36; Pacific Mail moved from 45% to 46%, ending at 4514; Lake Shore sold at 77% a 78 & 774, @ 76%; Union Pacific at 34% 9 36% a 8555 3444; Rock Island avanced from 99% to 100%, but at the close called for only 9934; Northwest common ranged from 46% to 485¢, closing at the opening figure; St. Paul sold at 38% a 3934 a 38 a 874% @ 375¢; Wabash advanced from 42% to 43%, dropping, however, to 41% in the final sale; Dela- ware, Lackawanna and Western was steady at 106% a 107; Ohio and Mississippi was steady at 27440215; C., C. and I, C. closed without much fluctuation at 224g; Atlantic and Pacific preferred sold at 15 a 14%.
