The Foreign Situation and Its Promises for America. GOLD FIRM. e WALL STREET, Fripay, Jan. 9~6 P, M. ‘The elements of Wall street tn no wise abatea their force to-day in holding prices firm.’ It is more than probable, however, that efforts are being made to induce the creation of a “short? in- terest, the market having reached a stage in which reaction may be reasonably antictpated and to which the faith of the “bull” operators begins to yield. Under the circumstances a decline would be neither inconsistent with past experience nor unhealthy, The wonder is that so sharp an ad- vance has not been checked before. The only ex- Planation to be given for the remarkable firmness Now noticeable is that money is abundant, cor- poration dividends are still coming out, and there is no such place us Wall street elsewhere in Amer- ica that for sixty days has offered such magnificent opportunities tor a first class “gamble” and its concomitant resuits, THE FINANCIAL CONDITION of the United States Treasury, the certainty that some method of inflation will be adopted, the con- centration of large sums in the banks, the ease of money in Great Britain, as attested by the reduc- tion of the rate of discount by the Bank of Eng- Jand—ail these, too, are incidents which bear with significant influence upon the general situation and are calculated to maintain confidence. It is not at all unlikely that, opeying this feeling, thou- sands of persons will yet be attracted to the street and will take their chances with those who are en- gaged in advancing prices. It is always the case that outside buyers come in at the last moment and act as the salety-valve of the great speculat- ors, who, having spun their web. and scattered their honey, quietiy retire to enjoy the spoils. In the early part of the day Ohio and Mississippi THES PRINCIPAL LEADER OF THE MARKRT in the upward turn, but later Western Union again assumed the place, being stimulated by the pubitcation of “a memorial of the stockholders” of that company “to William Orton, Commodore Van- @erbilt and others.” It does not appear that the aforesaid document is the result of any combined action on the part of stockholders, for we have no record of a mecting by them, or of the fact that the document in question is not the création of a shrewd party; but the proposition is unquestion- ably unique, forcible and well calculated to provoke the hope that, if adoptea, the company muy yet make @ substantial showing of profit to its share- holders. It was evidently under this belief that the price of Western Union was advanced rapidly immediately after the circulation of the memorial, and the last hour of the day witnessed an emphatic buying process. Sympathetic with the strength given to the market by this movement other shares advanced and tne close was at the best prices of the day. THE RANGE OF PRICES was as follows:—Western Union opened at 76%, moved to 77%, receded to 76%, and in the after- noon ranged to 78a 79% a 79, New York Central Was steady at 100g a 101; Lake Shore opened at 82 and closed at 82%; Aiton and Terre Haute com. mon sold at 17 a 17% a 16 a 1634 a 17; Northwestern common at 61% & 61 & GO% a 61Y a 62% a 61%; Pacific Mail moved from 43% to 4434, but closed at 43%; Union Pacific rangea from 31% to 327%; Boston, Hartford and Erie sold at 3%: St. Paul common moved from 47% 1 495g; Hannibal and St. Joseph common was strong at 3034 a 30 a 30% a 90%. Panama at ilé a 117 a 1183115 8116. Wabash moved up and closed X per cent better than atthe opening. Ohio and Mississippi went irom 33% to 345, closing at 34%. ©, C, and LC. was active, opening at 20% and closing at 30. This stock continues a steady ad- vanoe, and, judging from its recent course, looks very much as if it were on the road to the higher Prices of last year. The range of Rock Island was 1043¢ @ 104%. Atlantic and Pacific preferred sold at 15.14%; Alton and Terre Haute preferred, at 86; Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, at 9934 & 100. THE FOREIGN MARKET. A significant fact in connection with our own Monetary situation is the development of ex- traordinary speculative strength throughout Burope, especially in the Prussian States and on the English Exchange. The large payments made by France, the letting loose of immense amounts of capital, the breaking up, to a very cénsiderable extent, of the French boards held heretofore by the peasantry and poorer classes; the disap- pointment experienced by English investors in the various loans upon their market, such as the Turk- ish, Egyptian, Honduras, and others to which More or less of default has attached—all these facts tend to give new direction to capital, so that within a comparatively brief time the money of Europe will be more than ever seeking a piace among the paying sscurities of America. The cable pas destroyed time and distance. Bach aour's WORK IN WALL STREFT {s known on every bourse in Europe almost as promptly as it is communicated to the offices or our own bankers and brokers, and there is no rea- son why the immense pletiora of capital to which reference has been made should not, under all these favorable influences, seek and find profitable use im our railway and government bonds. Money, like water, will find its level, and wherever oppor- tunity offers for additional capital, through such large percentages as are paid in America, itis a natural and logical conclusion that we shall even- tually, and soon, enjoy the benefit. Hence the in. terest that at the present time attaches to the financial situation of Europe and the various phases reported to us from week to week. The amount of bullion which went into the Bank of Rngtand to day on balances was £11,000. The rate of discount in the open market for three months’ bills is 37-16 per cont, which is 9-16 per cent below the Bank of England rate. Paris‘de- spatohes quote rentes at 58f, 60c. Consols for money, 92}, 892%; for the aceount, 924 a 92%; United Statgs five-twenty bonds, 1865, old, 107%; ten-forties, 104%. Prices in Amsterdam are quoted as follows:—Central Pacific first mortgage bonds, $2; Union Pacific first mortgage bonds, 7334; Union Pacific stock, 2745; Northwestern preterred, €2% 5 St. Padl preferred, 634; Erie, 41%. THE GOLD MARKET, Gold maintains its steadiness, having ciosed at 111% alter selling down to 111% and up to111%. The wWeakness of the government is certainly encour- aqing te te upward spequigtiqn, There are nos @ | | few who believe in muon aigher prices, which they base on the Of the Treasury, the probe- bility of @ loan, aud, in one shape or another, ia- flation.
