One of the issues in the Jast charter election in Newark was the Sunday question—the closing up according to law of the saloons or not. Last sum- mer the respectable citizens of all parties arose and demanded that Mayor Rinord should enforce the law, but he dodged it on the ground that it was a dead letter. On this issue, a8 well as the general rotrenness of city affairs, Mayor Perry was elected. Yesterday he sent a ¢ vommunteattont to the Chiet of Police, which was read before the force, and which calis upon them to enforce the law, which says that “no person or persons shall, on the first day of the week, commonly called Sunday, sell, dispose of or deliver for money, or anything of vaing or on credit, or shall cause or permit to be sold or delivered any Spirituons, malt, vinous, fermented or intoxicatang li bie or any lager beer or sour Wines, in any restaurant or other r place within the limits of rthe city of Newark.’’ is not likely to be any disturbance over the matter. All the respectable dealers appear to be glad that they will hgve San- day to themselves.
