While Kane, who was & bright-looking Irish youth, was within the gate Stack remained outside. They missed each other, and the prisoner left the bag in a cigar store near the pier, bide tags $ there in the morning, hoping to find him. @ meantime the boy, supposing that Stack meant to steal it, procured the services ofa detective, and as they were walking along West street Stack came up and tapped Kane on the shoulder, and took him to tne cigar store, where the carpet bag was found. The clothing was left, but the money was gone. Stack told his story in such a simple and artless way that the jury believed him and rendered a verdict of not guilty. As the complainant had worked hard for the money the jury subscribed $32 and gave it to the youth. COURT CALENDARS—THIS DAY. COURT OF OYER AND TERMINER, Lucette Meyers Declared a Liar and Dis- charged. Before Judge Barnard. Lucette Meyers, the detained witness in the Goodrich murder case, was discharged from cus- tody yesterday. She has made so many state- ments concerning the affair, some to the effect that she knew all about the murder, and others deny- ing any knowledge of it whatever, that the Dis- ict Attorney has come to the conclusion that she is unworthy of belief. Mr. Britton stated to the Court yesterday that the woman had been brought to him by the Superintendent of Police some time since with the assertion that she would leave this vicinity if she were not locked up She pretended to know a great deal about the case and had made a very remarkabie statement, which, however, he did’ not believe, ‘Then she had made so many contradictory state- ments that she would be useless as a witness, for the simple reason that no jury would believe her. He himself did not believe & word she said, save her last statement, that she was entirely ignorant concerning the case. Mr. Britton therefore asked to have her discharged. dudge Barnard directed that an order discharg- ing her from custody be entered. This was done and Lucette was again a free woman, She leit the court room with a smile of satisfaction. SUPREME COURT—3PECIAL TERM, Decisions, By Judge Tappen. Partridge vs. Tucker. The lumber business 1s flat. Nine blast furnaces in the Mahening Vallcy, have blown out and six remain tm operation. The fall in the prices of dry goods 1s of course very acceptable to the laboring classes, but a slight reduction in the prices of provisions, particularly in butter, would help them materially just at this time. The Phoenix Iron Works, at Phoonixville, Pa., have reduced the wages of their workmen from five to twenty-five per cent, The Woodruff Iron Works, at Hartford, Conn., employ 125 men, and are running full time om full Wages, with no prospect of reduction in either. The icemen of Coxsackie, on the Hudson River, have been cut down to $1 50 per day, nine hours, time. The mills at Great Falls, Strafford county, N. H.. are running on three-fourths time, It is said that more cloth was sent from Great Falls to New York last week than for four weeks previous. When the Corning Iron Works, at Troy, N. Y., proposed to their employés to continue work during the winter at a reduction of wages, all but eight men agreed to submit, on the principle that work- ing for low wages was better than no work at all. These eight men, however, induced the others to Strike, and the result was the shutting down of the works, and the proprietors say that they will remain shut down to the end of time, if their re- sumption depends upon the employment of either one of those eight men. The question now is, how much bave the strikers made ? A curbstone peanut vender in Pittsburg, Pa., has @ bank account which foots up $12,000, He says ' that times are hard this fall. The contractors on the Massachusetts Central Railroad in Greenwich and Hardwick have dis- charged nearly all their laborers without paying them for the last two or three months’ service. The active operations now going on in the vari- ous navy yards will go a great way towards light- ening the burdens imposed by the panic and re- lieving the necessities of the laboring classes in the immediate vicinities of the government works, The new Barker cotton mill in Auburn, Me., will start operations as soon as the machinery can be adjusted. One hundred bales of cotton are on hand ready to be worked up. The Oil City (Pa.) Barrel Works have cut down the wages of their workmen. No strikes. WESTCHESTER COUNTY OANVASS.
