At the opening of the present. term of Court in Jersey City, Judge Bedle called to the attention of the Grand Jury the profanation of the Sabbath,.es- pecially by the traffic in liquors. There ts a statute in the New Jersey code forbidding the sale of liquors on the Sabbath, but it has remained a dead lester for years, the municipal administrations, both democratic and republican, atways pandering ta: the whiskey element, ever powerful at tho-polla. The Grand Jury this time, however, indicted several proprietors of saloons for keeping their establishments open on Sunday. Some or those Indicted pleaded guilty, and three of them were called up for judgment yesterday. Judge Hoffman in passing sentence on Christian Casselman, of Jersey City,,and Samuel and Josiah Bertholl, of Union “Hill, made the folicwing re- marks:—It is doustiess the opinion of that the mere selling of liquar on Sunday without noise or disturbance is no offence. The Court intend that no misapprehension shall longer exist upon that point. ‘The stasute makes the selli of liquor on Sunday ® misdemeanor, end afiixes a penalty of $200. But this ts not all. It also declares that the habitual sale of see on Sun- day makes a house, a nuisance. Anything that. profanes the Sabbath or violates public order, or shocks the religious. sense or feelings of the neigh- borhovd is ® nuisance, and whoever habitually sells liquor on a Sanday 1s pony, Reta he i punishment of which may haat igen two years ora hersvy fine or both.
