12 NEW YORK _ HERALD, SATURDAY, — ART MATTERS, An Exquisite New Picture=The fMe~ eital,” by J. Beaufair Irving. ‘The majority of people who buy pictures under- ftand nothing about them. This 1s sad for art, Dut it is happy for those who waut their walls full, nd donot much care with what. Then there is, @nother ana smaller class who have & quicker eye toagreat name than a good picture, and would Father pay $10,000 for the worst failure by Meis- gonier than $1,000 for an unquestionable success by an obscurer artist. These are the kind of people who never get beyond the parvenu level, who are either incapable of acquiring taste in matters of art or who lack the moral courage to be guided by their taste independent of the giamour of @ celebrated name. Th is nothing novel in drawing attention to this @istinction, tts one that has been pointed out a thousand times before. Yet to repeat it once again 4s Apropos just at present, because Mr. J. Beaufair Irving has just completed a picture which, because itis excellent, will be likely to be neglected by | these two classes of buyers. Mr. Irving’s hope for @ppreciation plainly does not lie with them, but with that circumscribed yet still very influential | class of people possessing vatural taste, finely ed- ucated, and made exact and instantaneous 1D its decisions by years of discipline. owe we have reference is named “The Kecital,’’ appropr! ran occupies the post of honor at Benaas No, 749 Broadway. It is very small, but ‘most exquisitely finished. The subject 1s SuM- a mnener by the title, and represents she various expressions of — appreciation visible. in the countenances and attitudes ef three ntiemen wo have listening to 8 recital ne fourth. What the recital may bave eZ ear ae vt rihal mintaldon or it may bave ie of 01 Di composi My Been ri selection, but the closed ‘book in the hand Of the flushed reciter proclaims that the declama- ‘tion has just come toan end, The scene takes place ima library, aud the costumes are of the Knee- Breeches epoch of 100 years 0, The re- citer occu] the extreme left of the picture, and stands at one side of a table, his back and ide-face turned toward the observer, One hand ids the closed book, the other Is eloquent with that gesticulation one uses in earnest appeal, pa: ticularly appeal that is sure of approval. His body inclines toward the three nab Ore, and his face Wears the glow and flush of a declaimer deeply in orn it and highly wrought. The treatwent three listeners is very ingenious and fening and if Mr. Irving’s intention was to illus- trate three distinct types of auditors he ‘has ad- mireuie succeeded. The figure occupying the middie of the picture generalizes the joility of the free and spontaneous enjoyer, with whom epicu- Teanism is an instinct rather than @ calculation. He per ere all over, quite as much in his clenched fist an disengaged hand as in bis convuised features and his outstretched body swept over with a wave oi risibility. His laughter is the un- affected outcrop EEnS ofa healthy animal nature, which knows neither cynicism nor megrims, aud Mabages to preserve something of the impulsive- mess ofthe child amid the slopes of maturity, Very different is the dignified but equally intense approval of the companion seated at his right and g@little benind him. “Here we have the approbation of a Chesterfield, the sententious approval of the man who had hever laughed aloud since he be- | came of age, but whose approval is well worth having. The hands that touch each other on the eage of the table are full of repressed chuckles, which find less ambiguous but eminently gentie- manly expression in the courteous face quieted for acompliment. To complete the contrast, nothing ‘Was wanted but the element that Mr. Irving hag introduced, judiciously throwing it into the back. ground—that of the severe ascetic, the constitu. tional Puritan, betrayed intoa grin. The satsfac- tion which the Puritan feels, against his will, may aaibly, avenge itself at some future time in the rm of. penance, but meanwhile he deeply enjoys the humor of the moment, and, in vain, behind a pucker, endeavors to remain consistent with his piety. We have iven more space than usual to a description of this picture, but the space is not wasted if our words shall produce the effect of senaing to Mr. Irving’s picture one admirer more than Mt would otherwise have had, The whole thing eceupies only a few inches of surface, but those inches have beer employed to a greater perfection than any other American artist has given proof ‘tbat he ould put them in the same line of subject. We doubt not that Meissoniers, less intrinsically Valuable, are hanging on the walls of more than one private parlor in this city; but we make this remark not tothe discredit of Meissonier nor the yo chieipeler af Irving (who would be the last to esire such a thing), but because the fact helps to shed light upon what we have said on the igno- France and prejudices of picture buyers. We be- Neve that Mr. Irving, in his studio in the Tenth street building, is completing several pictures in the same vein, His success is all the more star- Shing, because even his friends and admirers were a repared for it, and because the total destruction property recently placed entirely beyond his those advantages and appliances which every European artist who has reached eminence in this field 30 lavishly enjoys. KILLED BY A FALL, Coroner Keenan was yesterday called to the Morgue to bold an inquest on the body of Margaret Whikinson, a woman forty years of age, who, a month ago, while under the infuence of liquor. fell from a window to the sidewalk and was fatally in- jured, death ensuing in Bellevue Hospital. De- ceased was a cook and lived at No. 159 West Twenty-eighth street. FOR SALM.
