ADVANCE IN JOURNALISM. | jixas wae ee sae How News Was Obtaine% Then and Now. f {From the Springfleld (Mass) Republic’, Any’ eae gust 12.) Even our dreadful American moving ¢ my nas,its utilities and compensations, There i8 » more /valu- able flotsam washed ashore in this ¥ eary commo- tion of the social elements thaD 1 jostyof us have any idea of, it was while prov amg’ around the “new house,” Robinson Crusoe f ashion, that a good Jniend of ours discovered, last Spring, in an out-of- the-way corner, @ small bU" sete of very bilions- ooking old newspapers. Di’ gxrerred from the dust and cobwebs and brought #@ the ight, they proved to be Nos. 5, 6,7 and 79Ofethe first volume of the New Youk HERALD; D earing date, respectively, September 4, 6 and 7 & na November 30, 1835. What the New, Y.ozx Heraup is to-day our Teaders know Without our telling them. It dis- covers lost, explorers. Its “commissioners” not only standin V.ings’ palaces, but exchange views on current politics with the royal proprietors, The sun never sets upon its “bureaus.” We may add, that itrappears to enjoy, in a good degree, the favortand patronage of the advertising public. ‘Let us see how matters stood with it thirty-eight years ago, ‘The New YoRE HERALD of 1835 was a four page Paper, four columns to the page; dimensions, 11 by 163; inches, It was published daily at 202 Broad- ‘Way, “basement story,” by James Gerdon Bennett. It sold fora penny. The terms for advertising con- trast very queerly with the present schedule at the corner of Ann street and Broadway. Explaining that sixteen lines make a square, Publisher Ben- nett offers that space for @ year to any enterpris- ing merchant at the very reasonable rental of $30. ‘The price for three months is $8, for one month, $3; for a week, $1 75; for a single insertion, 50c. Typographically, the litle paper is neatness it- seli: the make-np, however, would hardly pass muster if judged by the modern canons. Taking up the HERALD for September 4, 1835, we find on the first page, after Mr. Bennett’s schedule of advertising rates, a directory of the city and sities Bhs ge So THE HERALD IN 1885 AND 1878, | city a _UROPEAN STEAMSHIPS. NUNARD LINE, NOTICE, With the view of diminishing the chances of collision the steamers of this line will henceiorth take a specified course 1oF all seasons of the yeu ‘daturde Septembe Bavurd Brooklyn banks, occupying @ column and a half; ® halt column of court calendar, an original poem (erotic) and a highly classical story trom the last American Monthly Magazine, which “ruus over’ to the second or editorial page. Next come leaded editorial articles on “The United States and the Manhattan Banka’ (in which the “miserable tirades of the threepenny papers, the Journalaf Commerce, the Times, the Courier and others are contrasted with the independence of the HERALD), “Almshouse Affairs’? (highly per- Bonal and, we regret to add, improper), and “The Hoax’’—Mr. Locke’s moonhoax, to wit, which Mr, Benuett finds very ingenious and amusing, though he is shocked at the immoral and unprincipled conduct of the Sun in “averring its trath in order to get money out of a credulous public.” Then fol- Jow a few personal and local paragraphs; we learn that Miss Martineau is in Boston; that there is “scarcely @ vacancy” in the motels, the city is 80 crowded with strangers, and that several new volunteer companies are ‘about being formed in the course of a few weeks.” Then come more editorial ar- ticles headed “Melancholy Fate of Matthias tne Prophet” (he wasn’t drowned, though, after all), “Literary,” “More Strikes’ and “Catholic.” In the fourth column we have the police reports (spicy and interlarded with poetry), statistics of the growth of Poughkeepsie, @ list of ihe letter- ‘Dags in the Exchange reading room, a hatter’s ad- vertisement, and an election notice over the signature of John A. Dix, Secretary of State. The third page opens with the regular money article under the head of “Wall Street.” Then come the “Marine Intelligence,” a brace of advertisements and marriages and deaths. The rest of this page and tbe whole of the fourth are given up to ad- vertisements, We should have mentioned that all the editorials are “‘side-heads.” In more than one respect the HERALD of 1835 sugrests and prophesies the HPRALD of 1873. “The child is father of the man.” There is the same. acute self-sutisiaction, for one thing; the same hal!-pitying, haltcontemptuous bearing towards metropulitan contemporaries and rivals, for an- other, Indeed, Mr, Bennett was a good deal more aggressive and “ugly’’ in his newspaper wars than his successors ever dream of being, ‘rhe Sun is boasting Oo! its advertisements and its circulation,” he writes on September 5. “It has little else to boast of, Its editorial columns are ever as barren, dull and stupia as the desert of Arabia. ‘But we go irom the garret to the cellar,’ says the Sun. No doubt you do, There is much wrapping paper used in garrets and cellars to tie up sausages and bundle away old clothes,’ Again:—“From the very fact that the three-penny papers do a species of race-horse business, that they are en- ~tirely dependent on this or that Institution, shey dare not for their soul’s salvation, or the turowin out of their notes, give a free, candid, full an truly scientific account of the recent panic, or the present state of the money market, or its future prospects. They only Sppbott @ party in stocks, or @ party in politics, or a party in religion.”” ‘The HERALD, we are obviously to infer, 1s quite Independent of party in all three; and, to doit justice, we notice that it. does slosh around Tatber promiscuous. It has its own opiaten of the United States Bank, and it pth 6 Man- | Bane with its huge capital ot 150,000, will -bear watching. It is bitterly hostile to the abolitionists, and prints such litte ee about Mr. Lewis Tappan:—“We hw Jormed that this individual, who re: street, has been teen Lat Bh je windows and doce ‘Of his house, so as to be ready in case of an attack. There is no danger, however, at present.’’ ay it thinks Harrison Gray Otis and his associates of the anti-slavery society are merely abolitionists in disguise. Its own (1835) position on the slavery issue is eufticiently defined by the following grapl:—“In this section of the country there is no excitement, no regard paid to the slave pom except by afew miseravie politicians an equaily iserable viockheads, The great mase of the people liere only know the colored people to coniemn and despise them as a distinct race from themselves. Here, in tact, the blacks are as much —_ as at the South.
