SOUTHERN SECURITIES, It may be generally noted of Southern securities that they are without material change or activity. Virginia sixes cunsolidated sold at 53, Missouri sixes at 9334 and new Tennessee sixes at 8334. AS @ matter of interest in regard to Southern securi- ties it is to be noted that the State of Georgia is paying, through the Fourth National Bank, the financial agents of the State, the interest on its gold quarterly bonds, These bonds were issued by the Bullock administration (hence their default), and the present payment is an encouraging feature for the future financcs of that State. The che. interest, as Was foreshadowed Mu column verday, ceutred around the se- curities whieh rest on rhe shoulders 01 Commodore Vanderbilt, and fo: wiose success be has usst™med the respons.bihty. In thia cunuection it may nog be improper to ob- serve that, in the deatn of Horace FP, Clark and the election of his successor, the Luke Shore Railroad Vompany appear to have ente’ed apon & new pliase @ success. While Mr. Clark lived Lake Shore was safe as an ally of the New York Central. Mr. Vunderbiit was content with the simple con troi of his’ Own line. When death created new possibilities 1t likewise forced new plans; and now it ig net among the deep, uutouched problems of tue iuture tiat boty o/ these great lines of traMc will become us a cominon a:tery, giving flow to the Same'life blvod and possessing greater value io their unity than they at present pos-ess apart. ‘The prognosticacious of business men with reler- ence tu eaca of tiese stocks are indicative of woa- deriul confidence in their immediate manazement, and it is not to be idly assumed that prices will not | be quickiy responsive to tus ieeling. Private tele- grams (rom the Weat to-day stute that Commodore Vanderbilt, Augustus schell, Amasa Stone and Mr. Buckbout, of the Harlem, had arrived at Chicago, and that tie Commodore was very much pleased with the Lake Shore property. Burg. From some cause that otber great railway corpora- tion—Evie—showed evident signs 0. weakness, the contrast espec ally to-day being strong between it and its more unpretentious neighbors. It opened at 60, the price in London then being about 46%. Subsequentiy London advices reported the market dull, and a recession to 453, a 45%. This caused a decline on the American side to 59}, a 59%, Jrom which there was no recovery at the close. It is not unlikely that somewhat of tus depressing in- fluence was cuused by the aunouncement that judgment has been found against the company for over $400,000, which hus to be satisfied beiore the 15th o1 August next, and that about $2,000,000 are still involved in pending suits. These 1acts, together with the incomplete report of President Watson, the alleged inability 01 the company to pay a divi- dend, owing to its lack of earnings, and the possi- bility that a loan o1 several millions of dollars may be required during the next three months, may likewise have had effect in preventing the stuck from participating in the general buoyancy of the market. it should be added that according to authoritative imiormation twenty thousand shares are now on their way from England to swell the volume already afloat here. At an adjourned’ meeting of the Directors of the Erie Railway Company, held at hali-past two o'clock to-day, the foilowing officers were elected for the ensuing year:—P. H, Watson, President; George H. Blanchard, Second Vice President; James ©. Clark, Third Vice President; H. Tyson, Fourth Vice President; A. R. McDonough. Secretary. Ex- ecutive Committee—S. L. M. Barlow, W. B. Duncan, Edwin D. Morgan and Frederick Schuchardt. Finance Committee—Samuel D. Babcock, Adrian Iselin, H. R, Baitzer and George H. Brown. On motion of President Watson, the First Vice Presi- ‘dency of the Board was Jeit vacant for the present, WABASH is moving steadily, doubtless in response to the natural sympathy engendered by its connection with the Vanderbilt line of stocks, the road being & part of the system over which the venerable Magnate is just now exercising influence and control, The earniugs this year are said to have been large. and it is stated by those who received the iniormation from the lips of the President tha &@ dividend will certainly be declared in October. The transactions in the stock to-day were very consiuerabie, the prices showing strength and ad- vancing tendency. NORTHWESTERN COMMON presented its recently firm front, and it is quietly hinted that in consequence of several fortuitous circumstances it may commence an upward move to-morrow. Of course, much will depend on the toue of the market; but, from the manner in which this closed, it is believed that the active specula- tion of the day will be resumed and continued. | As groundwork for this expectation, it may be stated that in the office of one broker alone orders were received by telegraph from various watering places, embracing the purchase or sale of upwards of 2,500 miscellaneous shares of atock. This would indicate that the strength of the market is some- what due to the influence not only of absentecs, but of a large class of distant capitalists, who, ob- serving a firmness in the New York market, are always prompt to avail themselves of any specula- tive tendency. “The work oi to-day certainly shows the presence of this class of contributions. With reierence to the rest of the quotations THE GENERAL MARKET may be described as iollows:—Active business was done in Union Pacific, which advanced from 28% to 28%, the lowest price being 28. New York Central was strong between the extremes of 103% and 104%. Harlem improved 4 per cent, from 138. Northwest fuctuated between 69% and 704%. Rock Island tmproved from 110% to Ill}. WEDNESDAY, July 16—6 P. M. The merchandise markets were irregular, and quite @ number of important changes may be found chronicled in the commercial review. The cotton market was rather more active, but irregu- Jar. Flour was less active, but steady. Wheat was rather lower, but decidedly more active, and the sales for export were considerable, both for immediate and future delivery, those for future de- livery being at full previous prices. Corn was less active and lower, Whiskey was easier. Pork was the turn easier, and lard was easier. There wasa little more movement in dry goods, hardware, &c., but the markers were without important change. Groceries were rather quiet, but prices were not quotably change¢, Petroleum raled steady, with a mod- erate inquiry for refined. Naval stores met with a mod- erately fair demand, and were somewhat firmer, both for spirits and resin, Burrea.—The market was quiet, with prices the tarn easier on all grades save fine, wich commanded former prices, Thearrivals from the West are considerably heated and the stock ot inferior and medium goods ha somewhat accumulated.
