10 THE JENNBRSVILLE MYSTERY. arrest of the Supposed Murderer of the Stranger. REVELATION. A CURIOUS Qne Tragedy Results in Explaining Another— The Most Remarkable Criminal Plot on Becord—Excitement in Chester County, Pa. Batrmorg, Md., July 16, 1873. ‘The mysterious murder of the unknown man tear Jennersville, Chester county, Pa., may resuit tm exposing one of the most remarkable criminal plots that have ever been developed in this country. + fo go back to the inception of th the miardéF Which built up, I must recall the circumstances BI the celebrated Goss life insurance case, which was on trial in the United States Circuit Court in this city three months ago. W. BE. W. Goss was po in ine Mutual Lifg Insurance Company, of Axew York, Tor $2,605. “Ho was also insured lor a lke amount, each, in the Knickerbocker and Con- timemtai companies, and for $10,000 in the Travel- Yers’—$25,000 in all on his life. He was au inventor and was engaged in perfecting the manufacture ®f an article which be claimed was to be a perfect and cheap substitute for india rubber. In Feb- ruary, 1872, he occupied a little secluded workshop onthe York road,a couple of miles from Balti- more, where he was working on his invention, He admitied no person within its doors, and con- ducted his operations in the most profourd secrecy. One night during that moath he and bis brother-in-law, WMILLIA E. UDDERZOO the man who ts now accused of the murder in Chester county, went out to this workshop. Goss entered it with '@ can of coai oll im nig hand; he sent Udderzook away on some trifling errand, ana the latter had* not walked @ hundred yal before the snop was in a bright blaze ‘Of fire. refrained ior some moments irom giving the al because, as he says, he supposed that Goss had certainty escaped the fames. When an alarm was given the shop, which was notiing but arickety tinder box, was burned to the grvund. ‘The xt morning the charred and biooly remains of @ man were jound among the ‘€bris Udderzook and Mrs. Gvss immediately accepted this as the body of Goas; it was buried With ail the honors, and in due time claim was made upon the insurance companies for the pay- ments of the amounts fur which he was in- sured, But the agents of the companies ‘were not satisfied that Goss had really died; They beifeved that it was a@ couspiracy 2o obtain the money by palming off a fraudulent body upon them and they resisted payment, or at deast the New York Mutual did to bring a test case. The cause was tried in the United States Court here and Udderzook’s testimony decided it in lavor ‘of the plaintiff, Mra. Goss. THE SEQUEL. Now comes the sequel. ay hen it became known here that Udderzook had beeu in Chester county and was suspected of bemg the murderer, attenuon ‘Was attracted to the strangeness of his con- ection with the two tragedies. ‘This devin; was greatly heightened when the a tion of tue murdered man was received. “That description, which makes him a heavy set man, With .ark and abundant hair and whiskers, Found .age, and apparently about forty years of age, exactly corresponds with the description of Goss which is contained in the records of the Mutual Company’s office here. Wit. this clew of Adcentity once established it becomes easy to trace ‘out the last crime as a resultant irom the first, TRUTH OR PERJURY. Udderzook was the only witness who concin- sively proved that Gosa had entered his workshop on that iatal night, and he turned the scale in the trial here. fis testimony was either entire trath or flat perjury. if it was the latter, the discovery ‘that Goss was still alive would have sent mim to the State Prison. Goss had just previous to his alleged ‘death been living au abandoned life. He drauk @ good deal, and wandered aimlessly about the country, The theory of the insurance People is that he was secreted by Udder- Book, and, becoming tired o! lying perdu, had again taken to his oid jabits. i he was discovered Udderzo:k :was in danger of State prison for perjury, and of losing the benefit of the whole scheme, jor applications for @ new trial are now pending before the Court here and Rave not mae been decided upon. Hence, Udder- wook must KREP GOSS OUT OF THE WAY, It is supposed that he went to the latter's place ef concealment, endeavored to make some arrange- ment with him, and, becoming exasperated, mur- @ered him. In support of this supposition Mt is pointed out that the stranger had undoubtedly some motive for conceal- ing himself at Jeuneraville, where he gave no name, but simply registered himsell as an “agent from Baltimore; that all the cucum- siances point to some acquaintanceship betseen the two men; that Udderzook had the strongest mo- tives in the world for making himself safe by get- ting his brother-in-law out o/ the way. The meeting of the two at Jennersville could not have been accidental; for it is not usual for one stranger to rive into a country town, halt at » hotel and ask nother to take aride with bim, Udderzouk dis- appeared fr Chester county immediately alter the murder, and returned to Baltimore, where he Was arrested on Tuesday. THE NEW CLEW. A great many intelligent people do not believe ‘that the body found in the ruins in February, 1872, ‘Was that of Goss, and this new cle ¥ to tie mystery fs widely discussed here to-day. Should subse- quent investigations show that Goss has really been murdered by Udderzook the conclusion of this romantic affair will be @ most wonderful sAncident in the criminal annals of tais country. Particulars of the Arrest of Udderzook— Another Brother-in-Law Inv: ‘ed. WESTCHESTER, July 16, 1873. Sheriff Gill arrested William Udderzook, the supposed murderer of a stranger in the western part o; this county, and lodged him in prison here last night. He arrested bim at his residence in Baltimore, where he was ac ively engaged in prep- rations for his departure for some region where he was not so well known. [He has a wile and three children, and when arrested and the crive with Which he was charged was made known to his wile the shock to her was almost insupportable. Udder- zoek 18 abour thirty-five years 0: age, hus resided in baltimore several years, and partof the tive was on the police force. His parents ure both living, and are residents of this county, thougn they have nor lived together .or many years. His mother is esteemed by her neighbors. ihe prisoner admits being in company with bis Victiin when last scen, but al eges he hired a horse and wagon to take him to :he railroad station at Parkersburg, but cannot;ive the name oi any @ne there who saw him at that pace, The Sheriff found conclusive evidence by papers discovered oo Dis person that he had been engaged in rovve ies in imore. The excitement in the neigh- borhood where tie horrible butchery took plaice continues to be very intense, and the inuss of evi- dence already accumulated, itis thought, is fuily Sufficient to estabush Udderzook’s wuilt beyond radventure. Circumstances point strongiy to a rother-in-law by the uame of knhoads a8 an ac- COmMplice, eee 4 Warrant is out for his arrest. THE HOMICIDE ON THE HACKENSACK. piece Coroner’s Inquest on the Body of Eugene Atno. The inquisition by Coroner John Mahan into the circumstances of the death of Bugene Atno, who was murdered on the Hackensack bridge by the Jerry master on Tuesday afternoon, was continued in Library Hall last evening. The post-moriem examination of the physicians showed that death resulted from hemorrhage in one of the con- mecting links between the spinal coiumn and the Drain. The neck was partia ly dislocate’.
