NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, MAY 19, 1873—TRIPLE SHEET. THE JERSEY WATER SUPPLY. Wewark, Jersey City and Hoboken Looking for Pure Water. Bause ‘of the Increase in Jersey City Water Butes—A Trip to the Pumping Works at ©“ Belleville-The Morris Canal the Fu- ture Feeder—What Chief En- gineer Culver Says, “Not one in one hundred of the inhabitants of Jersey City and Hoboken’gives a thought to the ‘water supply of these cities, except when the tax ‘pills are sent around, or when the supply fails ‘through some accident. Certain it is that not one ina hundred has seen the immense ouildings at Belleville, and the mighty machinery employed to souvey water from the Passaic River to the reser- But the time is fast approaching—nay, it is spon us—when the people of these cities, and of Newark, too, with Bayonne and all the townships ‘im Hudson county, will be compelled te turn their attention to this subject, gift of nature to man as the air we breathe, but if there be not a pure supply it is no longer a blessing, ‘the following facts, figures and con- slusions will, therefore, afford wholesome food for reflection to every person living within the limits ‘of Hudson county and Newark. The pumping works of the latter city are located on the Passaic River, about a mile trom the works that supply Jersey City and Hoboken conjointly. water supply is concerned, Jersey City and Hobo- ken may be regarded as one city, both being sup- plied from a common disiributing reservoir. The water works of Jersey City, instead of being self-supporting, have been a burden on the city. The expenditure amounts to $150,000 per annum, ‘the imcrease every year being over twenty per cent. With a view of making the werks self-sus- tatning the Water Department of the Board of Pub- Nc Works have raised the water rates, and there is consequently much grumbling among the taxpay- ers. The grumblers will find, however, in this Water is as precious a but an evil. We had an analysis mac@ that showea pretty favorable re- sults, but it was made in the Winter. Have an anaiysis in the Summer and nobody will venture to say we shall have the same resuit. That bill author- izing Newark and Jersey City to act in conjunction is a most righteous one, and to that com- plexion we must come. You ask me the remedy. Weill, there 18 the ris -Canal from the head of Bloomfield Piain, just three miles distant from our works at Belleville. It is a seventeen mile level ana the water is delightful. It goes away back, as you know, to Lake Hopatcong. No finer water shed could be desired, and, vest of all, we would have a wity supply. That level at’ Bloomfield Piain is higher than apy building in Jersey City. We would have no more outlays on the machinery in Belleville, which costs too much to the city now, It would be credited, of course, to the loss account; but, then, if we go on spending larve sums on it trom year to year, where shall we stop? or what shall we have gained? We must do at last what we may hesitate to do now und the delay will bring its disadvantages. The Morris Canal could be purchased for three or four million dol- lars; say four millions—two from Newark and two from Jersey City. The interest on that sum would be $10,600 Jess than our present annual expendi- ture. That would be a saving of $10,000 a year to commence with. Then we conld establish a sink+ ing fund to extmguish the debt within a reasonable time, But above all we would have a pure, an un- failng supply of water, Leok at those outhouses yonder, liniug the bank almost within a stone's throw of the conduit through which our people get water. Why, if the people would only come out here and see for themselves and study the matter there would not be indifference any longer in a matter of such vital importance.” Mr. Culver’s views in this case demand earnest consideration, and the joint meeting of the city au- thorities to-morrow at Newark have sufficient data here given for a standpoint from waich the whole question can be discussed, REAL ESTATE MATTERS, A Brilliant Wecek’s Business Ahead—Com- ing Sale of the Bradhurst Estate—Ex- tensive Offerings of Suburban Prop- erty—The “Jubilee” Auctioneers in Their Glory—Record of Private Sales, The public sales for this week promise to be as numerous and interesting as they have been dull and stupid for three or four weeks past. In city property we have to-morrow the offer of the grand Bradhurst estate, which is located as follows :—Six- teen full iots fronting on avenue St. Nicholas, be- tween 147th and 149th streets; sixteen full lots on Tenth avenue, between the same streets; twenty- four inside lots on the north side of 147th, twenty- four on the south side of 148th, twenty-four lots on the north side of 148th street, twenty-three on the south side of 149th street and eight lots on the southside of 146th street, 300 feet east of Tenth avenue, or a total of 135 Jots, all of them located in the best part of the west side of New York. The sale is peremptory and by order of Mr. Henry Nicoll, attorney for Henry M. and Elizabeth T, Bradhorst, heirs to the estate. Some time ago an offer for this property was made by parties who desired to purchase the land on speculation, but the large price eifered was no inducement, and Mr. Nicoll determined to chance a public sale, which no doubt will prove highly remunerative. The other large parcels Of real estate to be sold this week are situated in the suburbs. To-day Measrs. A. D, Mellick, Jr., & Brother, offer on the premises, in the Third ward of Bayonne city, four minutes’ walkfrom Pamrapo sta- tion, 125 lots, fronting on Fortyfifth Forty-sixth, Forty-seventh anda Forty-eighth streets and avenues C and D, by order of the ex- ecutors of James Currie, deceased The sale be- gins between one and two o'clock in the afternoon, so as to afford purchasers an opportunity to take the one o’clock train at the foot of Liberty street, Another extensive ‘Jubilee’ sale will be held by the lightning auctioneer, Mr. Jere. Johnson, Jr., to-morrow, at Hempstead, Long Island, when he proposes to dispose of 450 well located lots, and to- day, at half.past one o’clock P. M., he will sell 160 lots at Astoria. CAMP—THURSDAY, MAY 22, 112 city Jots on Tompkins and Central avs.,and Arietta NIXON'S FUNERAL, ‘Agonizing Scenes—The Burial in Cal- vary Cemetery—An Immense Crowd at the Last Services. -Micnaei Nixon was borne to his grave yesterday. All night long the friends and relatives o1 the body sat round the casket “waking” the corpse. At two-o’clock, yesterday afternoon, the funeral teok piace from his late home, 44 Baxter street, Ivis a dingy, crazy, wooden house, with begrimed win- dows, that are brokén and patched, doors that are rotting on the hinges, a staircase that threatens te tumble down as you ascend, an atmosphere of filth and wretched misery, There was a taint in the very air of the place, and the presence of the corpse and the sad faces and stifled sobs of the 4riends of the departed added to its gloomy and wretched appearance, Many @1 the people who crowded into the room where the corpse lay had known Nixon. Some must have held iriendly relations with him and have remembered him with kindly feelings, lor of the girls and women sobbed as they passed by the casket and looked ter the last ume bis features. Lhe casket lay near the window, id the bright, Warm sunsiiue streamed inio the room. The rays 0i the sun iell upon a beauti/ul cross of white flowers that exhaled a deiicieus periume as it lay upon his heart. They played upon his lace, that looked almost as white as the flowers, ‘Ihe expression Was resigned and sad; the eyes were slightly opened and met the behoider’s gaze with ascare that was ghastly from its very ca! the hair was matted; the lorehead w: than it bad ween at the execution, and the lips were parted in a faint smile of sadness. ‘The casket in which the body reposed was o! rosewood and very beautt.u., and the silver piate bore the lollow- ing inscription ;— CNEL OM OELOLILELE NE COLE LE ES. oreee® mares tee fi 3 ged 3 Died May 16, 1873, AAPOR ODER LEI EELODIOBEDE BE DODOLODEODDDES. ‘The outside gathering was immense, but the scene within was peculiarly impressive. The dead face, white and ghastly; the beautiful flowers, filling the room with their odor; the brilliant sun- shine, playing upon the reatures of the dead; the beautiful casket; the stated moans of the women, who were dressed in black; the cries of the chil- dren—all these rendered the scene a very sad one, Mrs. Nixon, dressed in deep mourning, with her youngest child, a mere iniant, in her arms, stood at the head of the casket, looking down upon the face of her dead uusband, and the child, in its happy ignorance, looked down too. The little girl. Katie Nixon, who stood by her side, understood her mother’s grief and clutched the casket wildiy wiien they wanted to carry it away. She begged them, in an agony of tears, not to carry her dear father away, and wept bitterly, But at last tne moment came, and mother and daughter kissed his lips and he was borne away to the grave. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery, where the usual services of the Catholic Vhurch were hela by Father Joyce. The grave is inone of the most beautiful spots in the cemetery, He bought it him- sell two years ago. His child,-whicn he had loved better than any other human being, was buried there, and they laid him by Its side. SHIPPING NEWS. WHITESTONE ‘TELEGRAPH.
