Considerable effort was made in the foronoon to keep up “commissions” {n addition to 7 per cent, but the abundant supply Of money prevented its success. The renewals were made quite generally at 7 per cent, gold. Seon afterward lenders accepted plain 7 per cent, whicu was THE STANDARD RATE for the day, borrowers being quite glad to get their money on £0 easy terms. Still later the rate fell to 6 per cent, and by a quarter to three o'clock money ‘was offered at 5 per cent. The gold market was firmer, in consequence of,| purchases which indicated a revival of operations on the part of the “bulls,” in view of a possible rise in the price with the approach of Sufmmer and the prospective resumption of specie shipments. Some effect was also produced by a cable despatch from London, announcing that the continental banks were raising the discount rate, in imitation of what was done oh Saturday by the Bank of Prus- sia, A8.a result of these influences gold advanced from 116% to 11734, and after a temporary reaction to 116%, closed at 117. Mr. Alired C, White, a young and greatly-esteemed member of the Stock Exchange, was announced at the morning session of the Board. Resolutions of respect were adopted and the flag of the building Mr. White, who was in bis twenty-ninth year, contracted a cold last week, which suddenly developed into a fatal malady of the throat. Il PACIFIC MATL PANDEMONIUH, The Rumors:on Wall Strcet Yesterday— Conflicting Opinions Regarding the Payment of the $160,000 Note. The feverish condition which Pactfic Mall stook maintained yesterday, and the noticeable reticence of the officers of the company, set afloat many wild rumors on Wall street. There was no doubt that the feeling in regard to the financia) condition of the company was much better late in sre morning than at the Qrst call, The reporter, im search of any definite information in regard to MR. STOCKWELL’S $100,000 LOAM, met only with perplexities and theories which had no foundation in fact, Prominent brokers were met who asserted that Mr. Stockwell had patd of his indebtedness early in the day, and that the reports to the contrary were started by the “bear” interest for the purpose of depressing the stock. So certain were some that this settlement hal beem etfected that they named Mr. W. M. Parkes, of Broad street, as the man who had supplied the money to Mr. Stockwell, Others pamed Mr. Rutus Hatch as the person; but when ealled on the for- mer denied that he was the man, and nothing ver could be obtained from the latter. Then there were not a few who claimed to be t wert positively that Mr. Stockwell had not and could not cancel his note for $100,000; and that, notwithstanding le might be possessed of a million or more Of the best of stocks, he could not raise the cash, Towards evening, however, although tae Stock was not steady by any means, A MORE SATISFACTORY FEELING had taken possession of the street, and thereseems to be as much faith as usual of late in this item of the stock market. : Pacitlc Mail opened at 53, advanced to 54%, de clined to 614s and ranged between that figure an@ 62% during the C irea ea The fluctuations show ps varying cred\bility in the rumors alluded to ove. PACIFIC MAIL OFFICERS RETICENT. Several visits to the office of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company resuited in ascertaining that none of the officers would say a word Belg ar Hels business of their President, and that Mr. Stock- well, to whom all reicrred the reporter, could not be seen at all. There did not appear to be any fear on the part of the employés but that Mr. Stock- well would come safely out of his present. strait, FIRST BASE BALL BATTLE, A Fine Contest on the Union Grounds— The New York Mutuals Driven Into Camp by the Baltimorians. The first game of the season for the champion ship, in this immediate vicinity, was played on the Union Grounds, Williamsburg, yesterday afternoon, the contestants being the famous Baltimore Nine, from the Monumental City, and the mo less re- nowned Mutuals, of this city, A finer day could not possibly have been selected for the match, the sun shming out with the warmth of Sum mer, while the wind played and tossed itself about among the budding branches and tuxuriant shrubbery with just enough Tudeness to be bracing and thoroughly enjoyable to everything in animal and botanical nature, Ot course the opportunity—the first of the season= for a first class airing and basking in the sunshine amid green fields and waving flags could not be allowed to pass unheeded by, 80 from two thousand five hundred to three thousand male bipeds betook themselves to the grounds, paid their eutrance fee of fifty cents, and then took it easy. ‘THE RETTING FRATERNITY ‘was well represented, and in the pools sold laid odds on the visiting club at the rate of 100 to 75. At twenty minutes past three o’ciock the Mutuais gathered up thelr bats and be- gan hammering away at the ball, ajthough, it must be acknowledged, without much success in the making of runs. They did not score any of the needful points, although Eggler led off with a nice base hit, The Baltimore gentlemen were muck More successful, however, for they were not dis- posed of in this inning until three cuns had been placed to their credit. By A BRILLIANT OVERTHROW from third to first by Nelson and a missed fly by Holdsworth these run3 were obtained. Holdsworth, however, redeemed himself in the second inning by captor two men on hot grounders, and as tield and Start gobbled up the next striker the visitors were unable to score, Of course, the Mutuals didn’t score; they seldom do. But in the third inning the Baltimores did, Start helping them to a run by suiering a ground ball to go between his feet, and yet the New Yorkers had not scoi nor did the Baltimorians in the fourth inning, bul they aid in the flith twice. Gedney, Hggier and Hatfeld rendered them assistance this time. Runa were not recorded in either of the succeeding in- nings, and as the Mutuals had but two more chances they found it very necessary to hurry themselves up somewhat when they went to bat im the eighth inning. Gedney walked leisurely to first base on three called balls, after which he com- mitted grand larceny in getting to second, from whence he was pushed along home by a hard hit ball which Nelson sent skipping to right fleld. This was one run for the Mutuals, and the only © one. By dint of sbarp play on both sides run-get ting was effectually hed to an end, and at twenty minutes past five o’clock the game was finished. NEW YORK WAS BEATEN and Baltimore was jubilant. Of the Baltimore's fielding too much cannot be said in praise, their play bemg marred by but very few errors, This much cannot be said of the Ma- tuala, although several of their nnmber—noticea- bly Start and Holdsworth—acquitted themseives 18 a 1354; Georgia sixes, 73 & 78; do., sevens, 90 a 91; North Carolina, ex coupon, 27 a 28; do., to North Caroliga Railroad, 60 @ 60; do., funding, 1866, 17 o 90; do,, do,, 1868, 17 a 19; do., new, 16817; do, Gpecial tax, 148 15; Missouri sixes, 93% a 94%; do,, - Hannibal and St. Joseph, 90 91; Louisiana axes, a 48; Alabams eights, 8; South Carolina sixes, : E & b] tl tierces beer at 4s.
