THE DRY GOODS IMPORTS. ‘The total imports o! foreign dry goeds at the port of New York for the week ending May 1, 1873, were of the specie value of $1,721,428, The amount mar- koted during the same perioa was $2,069,117, THE FOREIGN MARKET. The London quotations were steady for consels and United States bonds, the ten-forties being firmer. Erie shares improved te 60%. The new French loan declined to a premium of 4%, notwith- standing more cheeriul reports from the Paris Bourse, where rentes advanced sharply, closing at 64.85, MONEY IRREGULAR, The money market was active and stringent throughout the forenoon and during the afternoon ‘BP to as late as a quarter past two o'clock, the rate oD call ranging from 1-16 to % per cent., the latter equivalent to 90 per cent per annum. Thencefor- Ward relaxation set in, and by three o’clock the Fate had fallen to 6a7 per cent, borrowers after three o’clock getting money at as low as 6 per went. In explanation of the let-up it was reported that COMMODORE VANDERBILT had “taken pity on the boys” and loaned the street B million anda half of dollars. Less respect was had for his philanthropy later in the day, when it ‘Was stated that the money had been deposited in one of the downtown banks to meet the pay- ment of an equivaient of Harlem mortgage bonds which matured May 1. ‘The express. companics brought in over a willion currency. The outstand- ing extra greenbacks were reduced $10,000 to-day end now stand at $1,140,000. Commercial paper was mominally unchanged. Foreign oxchange was un- hanged on the bulletin board, but the searcity of Mouey caused a decline of 34% percent for ‘Sctual business, the market closing with arecovery {m tone when money had relaxed, GOLD LOWER—116% a 116%. The light importation of dry goods for the past ‘week induced a further decline in gold, which would doubtless have been more extensive bad not ecarcity of cash geld been discovered as the day @Avanced. The extremes of the day were 116% and 116%, the course of the market being as shown in the table:— 116% «8 P.M.. 4 0 P.M. . M. SATURDAY, MAY 3, 1873—TRIPLE SHEET. Portion of the improvement gained tate in the day. A tumble in ©., C. and I. ©. to 34% Was attributed to the publication of the report of the lessees of the Toad showing a loss of $530,000 in their operation Of it for the past year. Pacific Mail declined to 55%, under heavy sales, which were chiefly effected during the time that COMMODORE VANDERSILT was relieving the money market, his co-operation giving rise to still another theory of philanthropic motives, An active speculation in Western Union Telegraph occasioned a fuctuation between 4% and 865. Erie was Grmer in sympathy with the im- provement in London. The Manufacturers and Merchants’ Bank, the institution referred to a few Gays since as having been the subject of unfavor- able comment in Wall street, has followed the ex- ample of the Continents! Bank and invited an in- vestigation at the hands of the Clearing House Committee, The report of the latter shows that the depositors are amply protected and that the capital of $500,000 is impaired only about $70,000— a discrepancy which is a maximum, because the committee would make no allowance for some debts due the bank which may be eventually col- lected, Among the transactions of the day was & sale of 100 shares of Atlantic Mail (par value $10,000) at 1 per cent ($100). NKING HOUSE OF FISK & HATCH, No. 6 Nassau Staext, New Yore, May 1, 1873, The present high price of government securities is in- creasing the demand for frst class railroad bonds, and as the amounts now offering “are comparatively small itis roasonable to suppose the present difference of from 20 to 80 per cont cannot be obiained for any great longth of time. Government bonds are higher uow than for sov- eral years past. A “qve-twenty” bond at 120, paying six percent on the par value, yields but a small income on its market price, and if ntirely safe investment can be obtained with a difference of $200 to $300 on each $1,000 it is largely to the interest of the holders to make the exchange. We are recommending the following for such ex- changes or for new investments, all of.them payable in gold, principal and interest:— The Chesapeake and Ohio Six Per Cents at $8 and ac- crued interest, interest payable May and November. ‘These bonds are issucd in denominations of $100, $500 and $1,000. The road, 420 miles in length,is now com- pleted, and the business offering is very large aud in- aity, Ine Creag Tho Western Pacifle Stam! which is today 98, flat. ‘These bonds Cents at the market price, iG of 810udeach; aie ore been consolidated with the great Central Pacific, and pay- ment of its bonds, principal and interest assumed by them, we see no good reason why they should not soon approximate in price to the Central Pacifica, now 103, and becoming very scarce inthe market. Also, the Chesapeake and Ohio Seven Per Cents, in terest payable January July, secured by a First Mortgage on the Extension to deep water on Chesapeake Bay, on the proposed Kanawha River Branch and on the great bridge to be built over the Ohio River at Hunt- ington, and a Second Mortgage on the Main Line, with all its equipments, depots, Ac. Only $2,000,000 of these bonds will be offered for gale at present. Price 99 and accrued interost. We consider them amply secured and a very desirable investment. ‘The proceeds will bo used in adding largely | | to the present equipment and in extending to deep water on tho Chesapeake Bay, where the largest steamers in the world ean load and unload alongside the cars. ‘The amount of money to be Invested within tho next few months will be very large. The government dis- bursement alone for the next three months will reach {$100,000,000, and the May and July dividonds of the banks, railroads and other corporations as much more, We continue-to deal in government and Central Pacific bonds, receive deposits on which wo allow interest, make collections, execute orders at the Stock Exchange for cash and conduct a general banking business. acer FISK & HATOR, A ThoneBROARWAY.< LAPSLEY purchase.
