A Meypnis life insurance company suspended a few days ago. Jefl Davis isone of the Directors, and his suspension is also a mere matter of time, GEN. Dopar is the successful bids der for the contract to furnish beef for the red-skin beef ecaters. This will console his friend O'Baldwin for wasting so much genuine eloquence at that jollification over Col. Sapp's dispatch. I'RoM the Washington (hronicle we glean that the Grand Army of the Republic is reorganizing. We pre- sume it is the intention of its Brevet commanders to organize an expedi- tion against the Modoes or the U, S, Treasury. Ir it takes four editors to furnish the readers of the Lincoln Leader with intellectual pabulum, how many should it take to fill the cols umns of a firstclass city daily, or even an unpretending journal like the Omaha Daly BEeg. MuLLETS monstrosities furnish a prolific theme for the dyspeptic re- porter of the Chicago 7imes. The monstrosity in question is to be th postoffice and custom house of Chica- o, and will cover an area something less than half a mile square. A rumor comes trom the frontier that the Cure of Santa Gruz has been shot by his own officers. ToroxTO, May 2. The Hon. Mr, Tilley, Finance ister, has given notice of a propo~ sition to increase the Provincial sub- sidies. It is proposed to relieve On- taria aud Quebec of indebtedness to the amount of $10,506,084, and to e a proportionate subsidy to the other provinces WasnHIFC May 2. autopsy of James Brooks, showed that he died of an extensive cancerous disease of the stomach. WasHING May 2. Gen. Sherman said to-day that he looked for a change in the campaign toward the Modoes now that Gen. Dayis had assumed command, Ad- ditional troops will be sent and prob- ably volunteers will be authorized among the frontiersmen. NEW YORK, May 2. The Tribune publishes the follo ing: “The Receivir of the Atlantic Bank yesterday completed the list of depositors and amounts to their credit, but refused to give a copy to the Tribune reporter. An examina- tion was also made by him of the special loan account, and some singu- lar illustrations were brought to light, showing the loose manner in which the afliirs of the bank were conduct- ed by the defaulting cashier. These were of such a character as to indicate not_only criminality on ing each other. It was certainly in bad taste to prove their faith in Jesus in a pugilistic encounter at his birth place. Times “condenser” BAYS ¢ An enterprising photographer has ne to get some views of the lava ds. He considers himself entirely safe,-as the Modocs will take his mas chine for a traveling howitzer, and give him a wide berth, The Bee would not wonder if that berth when measured would cover a space of six feet by three. — GENERAL SHERMAN isalways prac- tical in military matters. He is not in favor of scalping Modocs, if for no other reason, because there is no advantage gained by scalping a dead Indian. We presume, however, the General would not object to a sur gical operation on the cranium of every live Modoc that roams among the lava beds. Gov. KeLrLoGa’s New Orleans or- gan says the Governor is determined to put a stop to all the various plans that have been in vogue for plunders ing the Louisiana State Treasury. For this purpose he has employed a competent force of detectives. Pars ties looking after Mrs. Smythe will probably find her now where she can do the most good—for Kellogg. Tur Lincoln Leader, having res centiy changed proprictors, also ans nounces a radical change in its edito- rial department. Rev. Chas. Little, formerly of the Saline County Post, is now the managing editor, with three assistant editors to help him through his arduous labors. We ap- prehend the proprictors of the Leader want but “Little” here below and want that “Little” long. ALex, H, PHENS i3 trying to sott sonp President Girant, we presume with a view of controlling a little Federal patronage. Ina recent edi- torial article in the Atlanta Sun, the ex-Vice President of the Confederacy says: “We know General Grant, and believe him to be no ordinary man; neither do we believe him to be sordid or corrupt.” From any other source this sentiment might be accepted as a compliment. ——— WHAT, if anything, is being done by our Board of Education, or Su- perintendent Nightingale, with refer- ence to the introduction of German inte our public schools? Some months ago circulars were sent around to parents requesting them to state whether they wanted their chil- dren instrucied in German. We were at the time informed that the replications were in fuvor of such ins struction by overwhelming majoris ties. Bince then the whole thing has ~AND-— COMMISSION MERCHANTS, DEALERS IN PROVISIONS, LIQUORS, &0 AGENTS FOR . 205 FARNHAM STREET, OMAHA NEB, been permitted to slumber, and since nobody seems to take it up, the Ber feels inclined to exercise its custom- ary impertinence to stir up the mat- the part of Tainter, but suggested to someof the depositors, who learned the facts that Tainter had confeders ates as desperate as himself. The special loan account shows that over $340,000 have been loaned on securi- ties, all of which have disappeared. Of this amount L. H. Niles, No. 8 Broad street, one of Tainter’s brok- ers, and as far as known, his onl broker, had received $90,000; and J. H. Conover, a clerk of Niles, who is said to receive only a small salary, named by some persons as low as $8 a week, had borrowed $35,000, Near- ly all these loans had been made to Niles and Conover within the last three months, Only one loan of $10,000 is entered as having been made previous to 1873, au i was as late as November, 18’ the securities deposited by Niles and Conover are among those said to have been stolen. The books of the bank show that the concern was indebted to Niles to the amount of $50,000, represented to have been deposited by him, but Niles yesterday appeared be- fore Receiver Strong, and Eeing asked the amount of his claim against the bank said it was between $200 and $300 only. This extraordinary dis- crepancy continued to puzzle the Re- ceiver and accountants until the close of the examination last night. Tne Receiver has caused inquiry to be made into the standing and credit of all Tainter’s alleged brokers, and the mercantile agencies' reports rens der still more suspicious their large operations for the account of the young defaulter. Further inquiry into the accounts revealed that, with- iu twenty~four hours of the collapse, one of the Directors had overdrawn the account of his firm to the amount of §6.000, W YORK, May 2, The report of the failure of ‘Swan & Co. does not cause a ripple in Wall street.
