Tee bids for the government gold filed at the ‘Bab-Treasury were 26 in number, calling for a total ‘ot $8,125,000, at prices ranging from 114 to 114.68. Two bids—one of 114.50 for $1,500,000 and one of 114.40 for $1,500,000—were believed to have been submitted by the pool. The sale was confined to $1,500,000, which amount was awarded at 114.510 114.634. THE FOREIGN MARKET. The London money maiket was reported still easier, with2 per cent as the rate in the open market, against 3%; per cent at the Bank of Eng- Jand, the directors 01 which made no alteration 4n the minimum of their terms for discounts. The bank shows a bullion gain of £273,000 for the weck. Oonsola came firm and United States bonds lower, ‘the '67’s and new fives having declined 4 per cent. Bries were also % lower, at 513%. Saturday next, the 22d of February, the anniver- sary of Washington's Birthday, is by law a legal holiday, and the banks, Stock Exchange, Gold Board and private banking houses will be closed. Mr. F. D, Tappen, chairman of the Clearing House Committee, has sent the following. notice and Tequest to the several banks composing the Clear- dng House Association :— Smm—You are hereby notified that the Clearing House will be closed on Saturday, the 22d inst, ‘that day Paine. @ legal huliday. PR officers are requested to send in to the r at the usual hour on Friday, the 2ist Pee heir respective statements of waht a for the week. MONEY STRINGENT. The money market was even more stringent to-day, and the greatcr scarcity of funds was re- flected in the higher average of the rate on call. A few renewals were made early in the ferenoon at as low as 1-82, in addition to 7 per cent; ut the lowest quotable rate in new busi- ess on stock collaterals was 1-16, and the bulk of the day’s business was at 8-32. As the afternoon advanced and the time arrived for clos- ing accouuta borrowers became exceedingly anxfous, and in their urgency to get accommoda- tlon to make up balances at bank as high as 4y and Interest was freely paid for a short spell, and a few transactions were reported at AS HIGH AS 3-16 “FLAT,” the last rate being equivalent to about 68% per ‘cent per annum, while, according to the same process of reckoning, the average of the day's business was about 34 per cent perannum. The closing rate was },which continued to be bid to the close of the dealings on the sidewalk. .The Chicago papers reportan easier money market there, un- der further arrivals of money trom the East, and | also look for further ease on account of an active Movement of grain in this direction, Meantime the scarcity here continues to be aggravated by clique manipulation. In this connection the bank statement to-morrow (Friday) will be an interest- tng return, Commercial paper is neglected and nominal. FOREIGN EXCHANGE LOWER. The foreign exchange market was duil, weak and lower, the leading bankers reducing the sight | rate for sterling a further per cent, to 109 while the same grade o/ bills were to be had en the street at 109%, and prime sixty-day bills at 108% @ 108%. Mence they allowed the gev- ermment gold to find its way unobstructed to the market, their bids at the Sub-Treasury having been submitted at prices which were far enough below the current quotation to make the transaction Profitable had the gold gone to them. Under these circumstances the quotation stood all day at 1143, a 114%, until near the close, when the sale of about @ million gold, agajns an equivalent of bterling, depressed the yrlea creas POINT to 114%, the atéring having been loaned to stock brokers on pledge of the nites they ‘wore ¢ car- zying. The Sub-Treasury paid out $85,000 el ac. count of interest and $7,400 0n account of redeomed five-twenties. 12M.. 14% 12:50P. STOCKS DULL AND UNSETTLED. The stock market was dull, and business was still confined to the professional dealers and fre- quenters of the street, among whom the earlier sentiment of the day was in favor of higher prices, the result being a general advance in quotations. ‘The chief features were a 1urther rise in Western Union to 91% and an advance in New York Central to 104, the latter looking as ifit had been inspired by the Commodore for the purpose of “twisting’’ the Albany lobby, who had gone “‘short’’ on the in- troduction of the pro raia scheme im the State Legislature. The RISE IN WESTERN UNION finds continued explanation in the prospective early adjournment ef Congress and the indefinite postponement of the agitation for the postal tele- graph system. The sudden advance to-day of 2% per cent evoked conjectures that a “corner” was in contemplation; but as the parties supposed to be “short” express most bullish and roseate views of the future of the stock it is now supposed that their locking up of money has been done in order to get the stock out of the hands of weak holders, preliminary to a grand “Spring rise” in this and other active features of the market. Pacific Mail was the weak spot and dropped to 71 on Washing- ton advices that Congress intends making an in- vestigation of the alleged dishonest means em- ployed to procure THE EXTRA SUBSIDY granted the cempany last Winter. Erie wassteady and almost neglected, its quotation being guided by close sympathy with the London market, The St, Paul stocks and Wabash were quietly strong all day. Ohios and ©., ©. andI.C. were quiet at a narrow range of fluctuations, and Lake Shore ac- tive and strong. In the last half moar of business the market lost its strength quite suddenly and de- clined quite sharply, being led by a@ fall in Union Pacific, which went off one per cent to 33%. Ata + $52,951,000 Great Western Railway to-day the leasing of the Pennsylvania Petroleum, the Pithole Valley and Chenango and Alleghany railroads was duly sanc- tioned. C, TONNER THE “CORNER” IN WESTERN UNION. Willlam Orton, Horace F. Clark and Rufus Hatch Intervicwed—Mr. Hatch Thinks Commodore Vanderbilt Cone trols the Company. A HeRaup reporter called on Messrs. William Orton, Horace F, Clark and Rufus Hatch yesterday in reference to the alleged “corner” in Western Union. Mr. Clark received the reporter very po- litely, but assured him that he knew nothing about “the corner,” as he had just returned after four weeks’ absence in Washington. “You ought to be- lieve what a gentleman says,’’ he said, with his good-natured vehemence, “and I tell you I know nothing about it.” Mr. Orton said he would be happy to give any information in his possession to the HERALD, but deelared that he had not heard of any corner, and if there was One he did not know it. “Youhave brougit me the first information that there was such a thing as a corner,” he told the reporter. “I’m not interested in ; to | any corner In any way, snape or manner. 1 am glad to see people appreciate the value of Western Union stock, I have been working hard for the last seven years to make It valuable, and it 18, of course, gratitying to me to see that my labors have been attended with success,”’ Mr. Rufus Hatch said, in answer to the ques- tions of the reporter:—‘I don’t think there is any corner or any intention of acorner, I believe the stock, in its intrinsic value, is worth all it is sell- ing for, and a good deal more. The Western Union is the only corporation the securities in which are dealt in at the Stock Exchange that is decreasing its stock and debt and increasing fts business and property.
