NEW YORK HERALD. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1873.—TRIPLE SHEET. > BINANCUL AND COMMERCIAL, ‘The Money Market Active and Irregular. The Rate on Call Rises to 45 Per Cent and Falls to 6 Per Cent. THE AVERAGE ABOUT 18 PER OENT. Progress of the Speculation at the Stock Exchange. ERIE DECLINES TO 63. An Advance in Pacific Mail, Western Union and Union Pacific. Reinforcement of the Gold Clique and an Advance in the Premium, Dombination of the “Bear” Pool in Stocks with the “Bull” Pool in Gold. WALL STREBT, WEDNESDAY, Feb, 12—6 P. iw} On Change to-day cotten was in better demand, ‘Out at irregular and lower prices. Flour was dull nd tendedin buyers’ favor. Wheat was almost entirely nominal, Corn was quiet, but prices were about steady. COMPARISON OF THE EXPORTS, The following comparative table shows the ex- ports, exclusive of specie, from New York to for- eign ports for the week ending February 11 and since the beginning of the year :— 1871. 1872, 1873. For the week..... $4,727,384 $5,308,173 $5,357,750 Prev. reported... 21,340, 763. 19,065,417 23, 33,083,181 Binee Jan. 1,.....$26,068,147 $24,373,590 $29,030,001 931 THE FOREIGN MARKET. The London quotations have been steady for consols and barely so for United States bonds, the few changes recorded in the latter being on the declining side. Erie shares were lower, in sym- pathy, doubtless, with the sharp decline in this market, but closed pretty steady ata reaction te 62, which figure is equivalent to about 6534 in our currency. The new French loan was quoted ata premium of 4% percent, ex the semi-annual in- ‘terest of 2)s per cemt. Fremch rentes were lower ‘Bt 55.40. THE GOVERNMENT PURCHASE OF BONDS. ' The advertisement of the government fera mil- ion of five-twenties elicited tenders to the extent Of $4,046,100, at prices ranging from 113.66 to 414.24—the large amount offered being a reflection ‘und consequence of the scarcity of money, and, in ‘some degree, of the call of tne Treasury for the re- demption of a hundred millions of the 62’s on the Ast of June next. As the lowest price of gold dur- ing the day was 114 the million was readily ob- ‘tained, the prices paid ranging from 113.66 to 113.85, MONEY STRINGENT. ‘The money market was stringent up to the close of banking hours, and the rate on call ranged irom 7 per cent, as the exceptional figure on govern- ment collaterals, to 3 per cent on stocks. The average business, however, was somewhere be- tween 1-32 and 1-16, say at 1-32 and interest, equal to about 18% per cent per annum. Just before three’o’clock the rate had fallen to 1-64 and inter- est, equal to about 12% per cent; and at a quarter past three o'clock the lenders, who had been hold- ing of for A TIGHTER MARKET than was experienced, offered their balances at as low as six per cent. Mercantile paper was nominal and neglected. Foreign exchange was unchanged at the desk, but lower for actual busi- ness out of second hands, the transactions repre- senting sales of borrowed sterling, prime bills of which sold at 1093¢ for sixty-day drafts and sight at 110. A bill in the State Senate, which abolishes the three days of grace in all drafts and acceptances payable at bank, has been ordered to a third read- ing. GOLD STRONG—I14 A 114%. The gold market was strong under a renewal of Clique efforts, the old pool in the speculation having recently received a considerable accession of belp from among the professional operators in the street, the newer allies being the parties already alluded to as concerned in a movement to lock up money and depress the stock market. The combination intend to operate for both a rise in gold and a@ fail in stocks. The clique advanced the price from 114 to 114%, and also rendered cash gold scarce in face of the scarcity of money. The course of the mar- ket is shown in the table:— GOLD FLUCTUATIONS, &C. 10A.M. «14 143g + 11434 alias In the gold loan market the rates ranged from 6 per cent for carrying to 1-82 for borrowing. The operations of the Gold Exchange Bank were as follows — The Sub-Treasury paid out $146,000 on account ef interest and $9,500 om account of redeemed five- twenties. The European steamer took out $203,156 In silver. The government list was only steady despite the higher average of the geld premium, its tendency toward an advance in prices being cWecked by the activity in the money market. The currency sixes were heavy and a fraction lower at 115, The new fives wero firm, but still nominal. A few sales were recortled at 1134, at which they are, it will be seen, nearly ove percent below tneir par in gold. The following were the ciosing quotations:— United States currency sixes, 114% a 11534 ; do. sixes, 1881, registered, 11734 @ 117%; @0. do, do,, coupon, 118% @ 11834; do, five-twenties, registered, May and November, 11534 @ 11534; do. do., 1862, coupen, do., 116 11534; do. do., 1864, do. do., 11534 @ 115%; do. do., 1865, do, do., 1155¢@ 11534; do. do., 1867, regis- tered, January and July, 11434 @ 114%; do. do.,,1865, do, do., 1867, do. do., 116% a 116%; do. do., 1868, do. do., 116% @ 116%; do. ten-forties, registered, 111% a 111}; do. do., coupon, 114% a 114%; do. fives of 1881, registered, 113% @ 113% ; do. do. do., coupon, 113% a 113%. BTOOKS WEAK AND LOWER. The bearish tendency of the movement at the Stock Exchange made further progress to-day under the auspices of the parties who are directing their efforts in furtherance of the speculation for lower prices. Their operations, as previously noted, contemplate a simultaneous movement for an advance in gold, by the locking up of which they hope to make money stringent through the reduc- tion of the reserves of the banks and gold scarce and worth a consideration for its use, It is not often that this double scheme has worked, and the attempts to carry it out have heretofore generally miscarried, because the speculators have caused a reaction against themselves after they have reached avertain point and made money too stringent to borrow readily for the locking up of their own gold. But the present combination claim to have avail- able capital enough to carry out what they profess to be their intentions, and the parties already credited with being enlisted in the speculation are among the richest and most RECKLESS AND DESPERATE of professional operators. They believe they have found the money market in a condition seldom paralleled at this season of the year; so that, with the banks down to within a million dollars of the Umit of their reserves, the opportunity to lock up money and go short of stocks and long of gold has been taken advantage of, with the hope and ex- pectation of profitable success, The pressure to sell to-day on the disclosure of the relations of the | cliques to the market induced weakness and a general decline in prices, the more conspicuous feature in the downward movement being Erie, which, itis only truth to say, has been more de- moralized by the declaration of a dividend than it would have been by the omission ofone, for reasons which it is dificult to define exactly, unless we accept the popular rejection of the assertion that the dividend was really earned, With the advent of such rates as 1-16 a 3¢ for money, the decline was most pronounced for the general list, Erie falling to 63 and the others declining 4 @2percent. Meantime an * EXCEPTIONALLY STRONG feeling prevailed in Pacific Mail, Western Union and Union Pacific, In the case of Pacific Mail the “pull” clique, who have been sustaining itso long, boldly took the stock as fast as ofered and ran the price up agaimst the general current, thereby se- curing, they believe, a considerable short interest. Union Pacific and Pacific Mail wavered for a while with the rest ef the market, but eventually cut loose from it and advanced to higher quotations than they started with. The light fancy, Boston, Hartford and Erie, also sailed against the stream and rose to 9%. The fact that the government bought a million of bonds to-day, and the quotation of six per cent for money subsequent to three o’clock, helped a very natural reaction in the last half-hour of business, during which prices recov- ered 34 a1 per cent from the lowest of the day, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. The CHESAPEAKE AND OHIO, the CENTRAL PA- CIFIC and WESTERN PACIFIC BONDS, all of which have been negotiated by us, we believe tobe among the best and most desirable investment securities in the mar- kot, which in time must become very scarce; especially as the government will this year probably pay off, in gold $30,000,000 five-twenties, and a large amount of money thus released from investment must find its way into this class of securities. The CHESAPEAKE AND OHIO SIX PER CENT GOLD BONDS, the total an “amount ot which is only $15,000,000, are secured upon on a property worth $35,000,000 to $40,000,000, and are fully equal in intrinsic value to the Central Pacific bonds. They are issued in denominations of $100, $500 and $1,000, coupon or registered, and attheir present market price (7 nd accrued interest) are very desirable. The CENTRAL PACIFICO SIX PER CENT GOLD BONDS are too well known to require description or commendation. Their total amount is $25,885,000; they have for a long time ranged in market price near or above par. Their price to-day is 10434 to 10134. The WESTERN PACIFIC | SIX PER CENT GOLD BONDS amount to $2,735,000. This road is now consoll- dated with the Central Pacific, and the payment of its bonds, principal and interest, 1s assumed by the latter. Coupon bonds, $1,000 each. Their market price to-day ts 8% to 94. As they have recently been introduced on the Stock Exchange, we expect to see them rapidly rise to the price of Central Pacifics, being substantially the same in character and value. We buy and sell as usual government bonds, receive deposits, on which we allow interest; make collections, and conduct a general banking business in all its branches, FISK & HATCH.
