The reported defalcation of Mr. George Kings land, bookkeeper of the Hudson County National Bank of Jersey City, proves to be but too true. The sudden disappearance of the young man, who, together with his wife and the pastor of St. Mark’s Episcopal church, set sail for Europe on the 10th of July, did not arouse any suspicion, as Mr. Kingsland urged that his health had been poor recently, By mere accident it was discovered that he had formed an attachment in New York that must have cost him large sums trom time to time; yet, in consideration of the respectable standing of his father, the suspicions of Mr. Hardenberg, the cashier, were not aroused. An examination of the books of the absent bookkeeper showed a discre- pancy eae and a further examination revealed The matter was followed up until it was discov- ered that ae. entire defaication reached the sum of $15, To offset this Mr. Kil has securities * to the amount of $5, It appears that young Kingsland entered the early in the morning and attended to the accounts of depositors. He made entries im the ledger and the bank books of the depositors without making. any entry in the dally deposit books ofthe bank. To detect the defalcation a minute examination of the books was eed It was ‘oy found that he altered the figures and pocketed the balance. Mr. Kingsland was treasurer of St, Mark’s church, the funds of which were deposited fa the Hudson County Bank. In the manipulation of the accounts of that corporation Mr. eee managed to help himself by the manner in which the accounts were entered. The cashier detected several entrica in which the figures.were altered. He communicated the intelligence to Mr. Kingsland’s father, who isa rach of the highes! fo ag himseir a ker and for a long time Collector of Hudson county.
