The Chairmaker in the Custody of Deputy Sheriffe—An Active Search for the Requisite Sureties—A Million Dol- lars Wanted—What a Know-Nothing Servant Girl Knew. The name of James H. Ingersoll will remind the public of the old Tammany Ring and its historic frauds almost as forcibly as would the name of the renowned “Boss” Tweed himself. Ingersoll it was that furnished those marvellous chairs to the new County Court House and other public buildings whereon the dainty persons of the Ring’s officials were luxuriously seated at a cost per sitting that would have furnished several tenements com- plete for our struggling workingmen. He it was, also, who, when the first confirmatory alarm after the Ring’s downfall was distinctly sounded, hurriedly left the city for parts unknown, and so rapidly and | effectually accomplished his disappearance that the detectives were in total ignorance of his where- abouts, and even the HERALD reporters sought him in vain. For some time past, however, the public | have been hearing very little about these re- markable transactions, about which such o glorious hubbub was made last year, and most people had begun to believe that the reform storm had entirely blown over, and that those who were implicated in the Tammany frauds might repose securely and revel luxuriously and without fear of | disturbance in the wealth they had obtained. Among the many who were “blest in so believing” was the famous chairman of the Ring, and he, trusting but too is ne im the temporary and | bal ay the law officers of the State, Nelly. matin a few days ago from his hiding Places in Europe and elsewhere and came haunt the scenes of his former triumphs in New York. A rumor waa floating around town last evening to the effect that Sherif Brennan was anxious to troat Inge TeOll With the utmost rigor allowg?. him Them Fight. How the Principals Left Baltimore and Where They Now Are—Charges and Counter Charges. There was so much confusion in Baltimore om ‘Weanesday evening and so little chance of the rep resentative men of Mace and O’Baldwin coming to ‘ny conclusion regarding future mutual ac- tion, subsequent to the interference of the Guthorivies of Maryland, that it wos finally decided to leave that city. Consequentay, at the latest practicable moment, Jom Mace, with his genial backer, and Dooney Harrig, his trainer. and the inscrutable’ savant of all pugilism, together with many other sporting men, arranged their valises, and with two coaches reached the depot (en route for New York) where there assembied, at s. moment's notice, hundreds who had heard of their intended depar- ture. The curiosity to see the nut-brown face of Mace was marked with much impolitencss, yet alg were in the best possible humor. The excitement Was augmented a few minutes afterward whem there stalked into the depot the gigantic form of O’Baldwin, his long-tailed Methodistical black coat and a huge twenty-cent uncut straw hat, with monstrous brim shading his face, seeming in strange keeping with his profession; and many looked with astonishment at the close proximity of the men who had agreed to mash each other’s countenances fora sum of money and the honor of being styled the heavy-weight champion of America. Both with their friends jumped into one car pro- vided by the officials, and ateleven o'clock shook the mud of the Monumental City from their feet, much to the relief of the citizens, as the town dur- ing their sojourn had been fearfully warm in many respects. Mace and his party arrtved in New York early yesterday morning. During tne day Jem remained with some friends, but this morning he leaves for his old training quarters, at the Highlands of Jer- sey, to await the sammons of his backer, The “Irish Gtant,’’ with his friends, Johnny Dwyer, of Brooklyn, and Tom Kelly, of St. Louts, stopped at Philadeiphia, and last evening, by ad- vice, O’Baldwin repaired to his old abode near thas City, to keep down his avoirdupois, in expectancy of an early royal bout between himself and Jem. There can be no question that the stakeholder, Alderman McMullin, of Philadelphia, means = these men shall come together in the wearre gee appointing of the next place to meet will be ith some eare: af secrecy, pos perhaps the ex- curaion dodge wi omitted. It were well he should be 60. mee these vomgitlacs case teat their proficiency in - the art defence and the amount of ¢ Na piabates iy can sustain after mutual hammer an arguments, they no doubt can do go, and should they not come together, or manifest tho inclination to do so, rag A or eitner will receive the punishment due ill faith or cowardice. Last night the stakeholder was endeavort arral etatls for another meeting, which it thought will be successful. Frequent telegrams passed between him and the backer of Mace, as there is @ decided inclination to adjust matters satistactorily there will soon be a mutual under- standing. The stakeholder is ring with the O’Baldwin party, and should there be such a clash of Opelon or preference im the matter of selecting the grounds for another and a decided sada the stakeholder will them order them toa certain point, and should one be absent a man will for‘er. his battle moncy. Regarding the cause of the authorities interfer- ing with the pugilistic arrangements at Baltimore, there have been charges and counterchar, one side vowing that the other is all to blame, and the other, with uplifted hands, that their opponents and the writer knows of what he aie owe tna thorities were surprised at the sudaci vo rough invasion of Maryland soil, and the of ity that, polluted the gtreets of Baltimore could not be passed unnotice Whether elther party wanted to back down it fs dificult to determine, but thus far there is nothing above the surface upon which such @ charge can be made. ‘Chin music’ is second nature to the ad- herents of pugilists, and the amount of truth con- | tained in many volumes would not at times amount to a decent paragraph. More serious accusations than cowardice are | made by one of the parties against the other; vue amid the confusion and the smoke resulting’ from | the bloodless strife, it is dificult to ascertain their truthfulness. Should they be substantiated, how- ever, and that deserving publicity given "ther m, | prize fe Tepes will have received the worst blow | yet in this country. | Meanwhile sporting men are awaiting the ordere of the stakeholder, and it is to be hoped that they | wiil be of that nature to give O’Baldwin what he | says he wishes and what he journeyed across the Atlantic to accomplish, the chance of meeting and whipping Mace in the twenty-four foot ring.
