Dr. Vandeupoel, in consequence of ‘Whé letteremudlished by the Commissioner, which ‘The Doctor deemed as refecting upon the Quaran- *“me administration, called at an early hour upon ‘tee Commissioner at kts office. He'stated to the ©ommissoner the’ displeasure he felt at being imdirectiy impugned on the subject of the ves- wel's “ccation, and stated that if there ‘was’ Sctual error anywhere it was with the Pilot @illespie, who was an attaché of the Com- @testoners’ department. The Doctor insisted that he Wes himself the sanitary guardian of the port, @nd was to a certain extent bound to accept the ‘State ment of o pUot as to the security or insecurity ‘@nchorages not ordinarily used. This was @marly not an ordinary case, as there has ‘Probably never been half a dozen vessels in ‘Be harbor drawing as much water as this frigate does, He had made objections to the pilot in per- eon on the deck of the Numancia when he brought “eer up the Narrows, and ordered him to TAKE HER BACK DOWN THE BAY. ‘This Gillespie said he could not, ip good faith and justice to the ship or to his own knowledge, do, as he believed there war no anchorage there that would aecommodate her, excepting such anchorage a could be found in the channei, where there ‘Would be danger of her colliding with other vessels, ‘f grounding when swinging at her cables, or ef capsizing ifshe should be unfortunate enough te go aground. As it was he was obliged to order eer guDs forward #0 as to bring her down by the feead and lighten ber aft, and even then she @oraped-the bottom twice. This occurred with the precaution of two of the ship’s boats out, giving soundings. Dr. Vanderpoel finally expressed to Commissioner ‘Biunt bis perfect readiness to send the vessel into ‘the Lower Bay at once, provided he would instruct a pilot where to find proper anchorage and to con- @uct the vessel to it, ‘The Commissioner directed Gillespie, the pilot ‘who brought her in, to take her down to-day at one o’clock and to give her anchorage at a point Just manny between buoy No. 8% and the “com- pass 8." Dr. Vanderpoel then notified Sefior Urieta, the ish Cone 9 of what big? They also declared thas he kndw whit he Was doing:and that Ne td taken the run through the Narrows because he aid not believe that the vessel could hold on in case ofa gale if she were anchored “outside.” On the other hamd some of the pilots asserted that the Numancia eye been brought to anchor off Coney Isl t, or that she could lie of the Southwest Spit, but she would have to take her chances if a biow shouid come. The Printing Office of the Christian Union On Fire La Night—Great Damage to Machinery—The Park Hotel In Danger—One of the Guests Seriously Injured by Falling Into the Fire—Estimated Loss, $60,000. An extensive fire broke out last night about ten minutes to eight ©’clock in the folding room of the press department of the Christian Union, under the Park Hotel, 10 Beekman street and 86 Nassau street. The foreman had secured the place abont seven o'clock, and all hands had left at that -time. The smoke and sparkles of flame were frst seen issuing through the gratings of the sldewalks on Beekman and Nassau streets by the newsboys of the Press office. They immediately attracted the attention of sey- eral bystanders by. their CRIES OP FIRE and the eagerness to see what was the matter. The pollce oMcers were soon upon the spot and gave a prompt alarm to the Fire Department. The following éngines were present in less than cight minutes :—Nos. 4, 7, 12, 49 and 6 of the New York Fire Department, and Nog. 1, § and 10 of the hook and ders. On their first appearance on the acene ACCESS WAS IMPOSSIBLE. There was no entrance.on Beckman street side and the doorway on Nassau street was closed. Tho Sweltering Heat of Yesterday—Its Effects in the Gity—Accidents from Careless Expo- wure—A Terrible Death Rell. Old Pheebus was at his tricks again yesterday and seems to have mado up his mind to exhibit his full power to the inhabitants of Manhattan. Even at a very early hour the lurid sunrays caused many @sturdy man ¢o quail, for everyone was on the toast, Pocket handkerchiefs and water melons ‘Were in great demand, there was a run on the ‘water pitcher and coo) dridks came to a premium. At ‘the various places tn the city where water ‘troughs-are located @ vast quantity of the limpid uid ‘was imbibed by the equine race, while the owners or drivers of the poor animals were drink- ing something much more deleterious. Persons should be careful not to expose them- selves to the calid rays of the sin any more than necessary, and those who are compelled to be out of doors should attire themselves in light raiment. In what are deemed ‘very hot climates” the thermometer seldom rises much above eighty- five degrees, even where the equatopial girdie en- circles the zone of Mother Earth. In those lati- tudes every one is careful of hig health, takes heed what he eats and drinke and avoils working in the sweltering heat of a noontide sun. In this country when the mercury has passed into the fatal “nineties” people rush about just a8 franticly and recklessly as though the ther- mometer was at zero, eat the most indigestible food, guzzle grog by the ee, and act altogether ip @ manner as suicidal as’ tho fly that sceks tanghier on @ barroom eticking pilaster. But even the cooling effect of the shower was not very palpable, the puddles in the badly paved streets evaneaced almost too soon for the enjoyment of bare-footed urchins who pad- died in them; the pavements dried, and those who had hidden tn cellar during the stérm came forth and derided the potency of Jove’s thunderboits and the efforts of Jupiter Pluvius to annihilate the caloric in the morbific atmosphere.
