M. Benedetti’s Hotel Gives a Lesson | in History. THE SPLENDORS OF THE PAST The French Ambassador’s Bffects Under the Hammer. BERLIN, April 21, 1871, ‘There is surely no more severe satire upon we Prognostications and professions of the past than the realities of the present. The present is go 1n- tensely uncompromising im exposing all the litte fallacies, ali the empty phrase-makings, and in show- ing the hollow backs of all the masks that looked | ke smiling faces when coming toward us through the future. Forgive the moralizing—it is a melan- | choly weakness to fall into—bat the rapid transitions of the last few months are enough to give anybody | a touch of that complaint who 18 Rot very strong: minded indeed, The immediate cause of these re- marks 13 THE SALE AT THE FRENCH EMBASSY AT BERLIN of all the goods and chattels of M. Benedetti to be , found therein, Poor M. Benedetti! whose name is 80 celebrated in the song, ‘A little Frenchman came toa town upon the Khine,”? Ha! hat He is 60 in- mately connected in all minds with the commence- ment of the war (hat he might almost be called M. Thaledetti instead of Benederti. TEN YEARS AGO | avery festive scene was goingonin these apart- menis of the French Embassy in Berlin, The King | and Queen of Prussia had just been crowned, Louis | Napoleon had just appeared as @ sping victor in ltaly. Hastening from tnose fields of fame the | Duke of Magenta presented himself, with best com- pliments and messages from the French Emperor, | to the Prussian King. All were so happy, 80 friendly, such truly alllea P The height of the feast had come; if was growing late; midnignt had strack, when one more delicate attention from France to Prussia arrived—a telegram from ° NAPOLEON JL. TO QUEEN AUGUSTA, presented to her Majesty with a magnificent bou- quet. (N. B.—The Emperor did not send the flowers by telegraph.) Ah, those same telegraphic wires were to bring very different messages ‘wo that lady before she or her complimentary friend | passed out of sight in the history of Europe. And now those elegant apartments, those classic shades, penetrated only by the noblest and the most trusted, have been thrown open to avybody that chose to go ‘an. M. Benedetti’s royally-trodden carpets and roy- als y-used china and glass have been exposed and caiatogued and set up for sate, just like Mr. Joncs? or Mr. Simth’s, and if they have not protested it 1s only because they haven’t ‘de guow” The Bere lin’ public are gratified by this moral tale in action, thts story, he moral of which appears to be, Don’t beheve there are many fixed stars 1u the | politcal firmament.” Most of these luminous ap- pearances are only comets, and very eccentric hea- venly bodies indeed. very mosaent you are called to benold, “Encore cwile qui file, qui file, qui Mle ec disparati.” BERLIN IN M, BENEDETTI’S ROOMS. ‘The curtous took advautage of the entrée afforded them and patronized M. Benedett!’s things on view to @ great extent on Sunday, uhat being the singular day appointed. Up the somewhat narrow staircase they streamed, through the passages encumbered With packing Cases, Lito the ante-room, where they Touna two great Sevres China vases to admire, In the ali all Kinds of crockery ware appeared m con- fused heaps, with little regiments of Champagne and other wine glasses. One of those very giasses, if it could onty tell its tale, might be able to declare, “Once his Majesty of Prussia’s Champagne was 10 Te, and I was highly honored; now I am disgraced because ms Majes\y has been iu Champagne.’ The crockery puzzied the Ber- liners. ‘rhey did not know quite how to estimate i ‘*Was it Sevres ware or only English ware?” they were not aware themselves. The bil- lard room was also curiously visited, It contained @sull greater conglomeration of objects for. sale— curtains and Carpets, stools, mirrors and beds—all ariicies of jurniture were bere brought iuto unnatus ral proximity. A picture of the Emperor Napoleon, not considered a good one, hung stul upon the wall in ali the pomp of robes and crown and regal joys and very broad gilt irame. Here also hung (signiti- cant sight) @ great map of the Prussian State as it appeared in the year 1360—as it appears no more. Prussia, Germany at least, grows lke “a growing boy—it_wanis & new map now. Queen Victoria hes a photograph book of ber children, containing YRESH PHOTOGRAPHS of them from year to year. Tius she can glance back at Prince Arthur ata year old, Prince Arthur at two years old, at three years, and 80 on, and see bow much the royal boy grew between whiles. This 48 Lhe sort of atlas that we ought to get of Germany af it continues, like David Copperfeld’s page, to “grow like scarlet beans.” The map at M. Bene- detu’s was not unobserved, its mute evi- dence to the recent development of the power ‘Unerein portrayed. Truly blstory has been striding qwith @ pair of seven league boots these last ten years, and our minds go panting and struggling alter it, hardly able to realize one great smashing change before another tumbles plump upon us, What a mighty conclusion of the moral world is signilied by that heap of carpets and curtains ip the French embassy at Berio, those heaps of plates and Qishes and rows Of glasses in we THE STABLES. The lve denizens of M. Beneditti’s staples were No jonger there; but all his “rolling stock’? was left, w bea gazing stock for the Berliners, There they pd the grand processional coach, built to take part in a state pagean ‘ant, left stranded now, poor toy! to be sold for what it would fetch, What is there more empty than these bits of the mechanism of grandeur when their prestige and the ~ that them iife is gone ous The empty robes, the headless crown, harlaguiats —- without barlequin’s self—Punch without the showman. Why, a wagon or @ cart is worth More than a state coach then. There, too, were the Ambassador's private carriages. These are all Painted green, and have his coat of arms and his a “Fide et aifide,” upon them, {t might be hanged to “tidy and untidy,” to represent the con- dition of the win and elegant stables and the house in its contusion, as benela by the public the last few days, It was always called the Ambassador's Hotel, but now it besomes ay a yen ater THE COURTS.
