We give in another portion of the paper 8 letter frem Elko, Nevada, a town on the line oft'ie Central Pacific Railroad, containing the important information that coal of excellent quality and very rich iren ore have been dis- covered in that vicinity, If this information is correct, and we have no reason to doubt it, the immense value of these deposits can hardly be estimated. Rich as Nevada is known to be in silver and gold, they will sink into insignifi- cance, comparatively, sheuld coal and iron be found to abound. The Central Pacific Rail- road Company wiil be greatly beneflied there- by. It has been obliged to depend upon woed cut from the Sierra Nevada Mountains or from points distant from the track to supply its motive power, and the latter is neces- sarily very costly. All the — coal they have used has been obtained from the Wahbsach range of mountains in Utab, on the line of the Union Pacific Railroad, and has to be hauled a long distance at great expense before reaching the points where it is required. Ag coal has been found at Elko, nearly the central point of the former com- pany’s line, the probabilities are that it wiil be discovered at other points, until all the fuel required for iocomotive and other purposes can be had at a very low figure. That iron ore of fine quality has been discovered is even of more importance, and, as the writer of the letter says, smelting furnaces will soon be erected and the value of the deposit fully dosted. The demand for iron on the Pacific coast has heretofore been entirely supplied from England and the Eastern States; but now, if it cna be had almost at their doors, its yalne for railroad and mannfacturiag pur- e..lenluble. poses will be found mvera. The Book C The Methodist Book Concern affairs ara at last, it appeara, to be investizated. The Rev. Dr. Carlton, agent, having demanded the fullest investigation of his offisial manage- ment of the Concern, and the Book Commit- tee’s sub-committee having, from canses already published, filed to appoint experts to examine the books, he has himself selected three well known accountants—aamely, Messrs, J, Van Vieck, a Methodist, of Brooklyn, chief ; Charles Callender, a Baptist, of Newark, and F. W. Gunn, a Presbyterian, of this city, assistants. Mr. Van Vleck had bsea unani- mously selected by the committes, but was objected to by Dr, Linahaa’s counsel becanse he had been attending to this work for some time past. Their instructions are most liberal and strict, and they are not only authorized to examine the cash and other accounts, but to qnestion the employes also in relation to any and every matter which may come before them. Thus, without any more subterfuge and “whitewashiag,” this whole mystery will soon be cleared up, and the Church and the public will be able to judze whether the allegations of ‘‘fraud and mis- management” are well grounded or otherwise, This action of Dr. Carlton shows also that, his accusers to the contrary notwithstanding, he is not afraid of an investigation. Although made upon his own personal responsibility. bis action has the approval of the Bisuop and the sub-committee, who are only too glad, of course, to get out of the saarl in which they had placed themselves tins easily. Important Session of the General Council of the Minery Union—The Wages Question to be Settlod by Arbitration—Immence Politico. Industrial Organization—A Now Power Forming in the Land, Mavcu Cavnk, Pa., April 11, 1871. ‘The Genetal Council of the Miners’ Union resumed its session this morning. ‘The firat business brougnt before the meeting was an tnyestigation of the re- ported outrages at Scranton, Several delegates reported that they nad visited Scranton, and were unable to discover that the miners nad engaged in ‘ny outrages whatever, It was admitved that several hundred miners had paraded tna streets of Scranton with an American flag at their head. Some say it was an Irish-American flag, whatever that may Le. It has been proven no one was Killed except the iteutenant and corporal of militia who were accidentally shot on Saturday night last. Some of the delegates to the Tulon moved to make no oMicial inquiries or investigation tll they were officially informed by officers of the law or their association that outrages had been committed. They had nothing to go by except rumor. JOUN SinzY, president of the Schuylkill region, moved that the investigation be proceeded with, ag the press of this region and New York had coutnined reports of the outrages. He said, “I believe the money or powerful corpora- tions has becn used to incite the miners to riot, I have not forgotten the language that nas becn used, by men holding leading positions on ratlroads tn tuls State, when ono of them, Franklin P, Gowen, said that such a howl of indignation would arise through the land that we would be forced to accopt thetr terms. I wish the matter investigated, I want the se-calied Scranton riots tuvestigated, I believe it susceptible of proof that ratiroad men and operators connived at what they are pleased to term the out- rages of the Workingmcn’s Benevoleut Association, it cannot be expected that we, as an organization, are above reproach. We tive as big scalawags in the Workinginen’s Benevolent Association as the worldcan furnish; yet, sir, I question if there can be found in any other association of fifty thousand men more regard for law aud order or better conservators of the law. The miners claim that there has been no actual rioting, and whatever has been done thus far has been secretly imstigated by parties whose interest tt is to heap reproach upon their good name.” The matter is to be further investigated, The Guestion ef arbitration was broacnel this afternoon, committee wa? uppotnted to drait sultabie resolutions expressive of the seuse of the mceting on this vexed question, They returned at clock and reported as follow: committee, appointed to draft resolutions. &e., re- commending some means of aeltling the present dificulties by arbliration, conci!fation or otherwise, do respectfully sub- mit our majorlty report :— Reavived, ‘That wo recommend, as tho best means to settle the present diticnity, a Board of Aridtration, to conniat of ten members of the Workinginen's Kenevolent Association anda like number of coal” opera axrse upon an umpire 1f neceseury, interested party, . 8 JOUN N. I am sorry to report that the prospects of an amicable adjustment of the Issues beiween the companies and the miners are not so favorable now as heretofore. There was another confer. ence today, and the result proved anything but satisfactory, It 18 said the representatives of the companies have wetermined to a here to the programme foreshadowed by the local journals, and will consider no terms of setticment, except an uncondittonal surrender of the miners, which inciudes an abandonment of the Union, a relinguishment of the demand for basis and resumption of work at eighty-six cents per dia- mond car. From this it would appear that the com- panies do not propose to make any concessions, and wilt waintain the arbitrary and uncompromising attitude which has been tietr character toward (he workmen «ll along. ‘he iupression prevails that, in the recent move- mon pretending to ve an equitable adjustment of difficultics, the companies’ representatives have re- sorted to “ways which are dark and tricks which are vain" to deceive the public and hoodwink the miners, There is a feverishness in the city to night and an unsettled feeling, and one of alarm that eliver tnis speech he will take occasion to reply to © the aspersions which have been made upon him as n, and to demonstrate to the satisfaction oe nnee who enterttin doubts upon the sauject that he {9 a9 sound in the republican faith as any Oo! those who have seen proper lo question bis party NTS more serious trouble is near at hand. It 1+ not believed that the corporations will yield anything now. The disposition to tiumph over the miners ap- Pears to be stronger than any regard for the peace of the city, and it is probable that the policy will be to crush rather than consider what may happen. In the present temper of the parties the miners may be driven into some other overt act than to riot, and then conflict with the State troops, The result may be l:nagined, not described, The people are waiting wit anxiety the developments of the next few hours, and earnestly pray that the rays of hope which began to shine on this distracted clty may not be swollowed up in the gloom of despair, ruin and bloodshed, The miners are still peaceable, and the city was never more quiet aud orierty. ‘There are 260 seidiers: here.
