It ts a curious fact, however, that in the present crisis our bonds have been higher in Europe than in New York, as anybody will ascertain by ciphering out the price in gold with exchange added. It was the sudden reversal in the price and accompanying. buoyancy of our five-twenties in London which drove these specalators to the desperate resource of bidding gold up to figures which frightened the shorts and createa a general scramble. . Until the actual amount of bonds to be returned from Europe in this crisis is known, it 18 impossible to attempt to 1x the prica to which gold may advance. Although the bulls enjoy a triumph at present, a day of reckoning will undoubt- edly come. Just now. the friends of our national credit are beleagured by the forced sales ofour secu- ritles in the foreign market, where, in the excitement aud timidity of capital-everything is turned into Money without regard,to intrinsic merit. Were we in debt to Europe outside of the nominal indebted- Ness of our bonds, we should be under the necessity in this juncture of making heavy shipments of coin, But the exhibit of the © National Bureau of Statistics shows that for the ten months of the fiscal year up to May 1 our exports in gold values were only the trifle of five millions less than ourimports. In other words, the millions of bonds which went to Europe the past year were bought by Europeans as investments, They were not shipped in forced payment of the balance of trade. Our ex- ports paid for our imports. In estimating, there- fore, the amount of bonds hkely to be returned to us the public should remember this important fact The capitalists and peasants of Europe who bought our five-twenties the past year, when their home finances were undisturbed, are not likely to part with their investments when a state of war is certain to depress alike English ¢onsols, French rentes and Prussian funds. Let the public, moreover, remember that the only condition of the future calculated to enhance gold is the return of these bonds. This influence abated or removed the conditions will be harmonious for a decline in gold; for with war in Europe we shall ship every bushel of grain and barrel of provisions we can spare. Our imports of silks, brandies and other manutactures of France will be suspended. England will be the only country able to sell to us, and of her goods we are annually buying less and less, for the reason that East and South we are building rivais for her Manchester, Birmiiigham, Leeds, Bradford and Rochedale. Were not our bonds abroad at this moment so distributed as to le partially in the hands of speculative bankers who are compelled to realize upon them the war in Europe would be the last impetus we should need in our progress to specie payments, STOCKS UNSETTLED AND LOWER. The stock market at the opening was strong de- shite the tendency which it had previously mani- fested to move inversely with the gold premium, ‘This change was the result of heavy purchases on the part of brokers alleged or reputed to pe the agents of the clique operators, who, wearied, if not apprehensive of the tendency of stocks to go down as gold went up, seemed as if makig a harmonious and . determined effort to get stocks and gold to move sympathetically, as they were wont to do in former times, But as gold ran toward 121, and finally leapea that barrier and coursed on to 123, the cliques lost con- trol again and stocks sharply deciined, the uphill work of the forenoon being undone in a few minutes, During the rest of the day the old tendency of prices to move counter to gold asserted itself. Hence the market recovered when gold fell to 1197, and fell off at the close with the last advance of oa GOVERNMENTS STRONG, The government market was steady in comparison tothe fluctuations in gold and stocks, and prices changed less than a half per cent. MONEY MORE ACTIVE, The money market showed increasing activity, and while the general rate on stocks was six per cent and on governments four to five, borrowers toward the close of banking hours had, in some instances, to pay seven per cent, The change in the rate on call has hardly as yet affected discounts, which were quoted at six to seven and a half per cent for prime double names.
