JOURDAR'S RANK AND FILE. Hie Night Kaids Upon Station Houses-The Bowery Concert Business Aguin~ the Tenth Presinct Irrogularitice. Commissioner Brenuan yesterday was entertained for over three hours by hearing evidence in com- plaint against oficers of ihe police force. ‘The most peculiar one was couirivated by the Tent precinct, The complainant was Maurice Brockman, keeper of a low concert saloon and dea of infamy at No. 23 Bowery, who, it wit be rememmbered,- figured in the combination scheme to break officer Dyer, and the deieadants were rounis- men Westermen ana Schultz of ihe precinct. The charge is that they came into his place, arrested him for steuling a slaw] belonging vo one of his girls, and on the way to the station house clujbed fim severely. The evidence of Sergeant Sandford and Mrg. Brockman was decidediy against the officers, Sandford declared that they used’ him very roughly, and when he asked them to desist they told tim the prisoner belonged to them and clubbed him. One witness, Lepman Castles, of 130 Attorney street, eee Te Wasi the saloon Instructing Brockman, had just been admitted to the mysteries of Masonry, when the oMfcers came In and Brockman went with them. They treated him shamefaily and pushed him by the meck. The de- fendants’ witnesses proved that Brockman’s wile Tram out in the street and collevted a crowd, whea Brockman used grosély abusive language, resisted, and was hit by Westerman, One of them swore that @ Witness for the prosecution hadi told him he was tobe paid liberally to assist in breaking the officers. The impresston was left on the Court that Ser, it Sandford was interested in convieting the o: and that Sergeant lilggms was a party to getting the girl who made the compliiat against Brockman wen it. The seigeauts will likely be placed on The full Board then proceeded to try goonaine of Superintendent Jourdan, andiord, Sergeant Second precinct, was aed Superintendent Jourdan with neglect of duty. a Jourdan stated that between three and four o’clock on Saturday mornmg he entered the Beek- man street station house, saw no one in the Office, went into a small room, saw the doorman, who called the sergeant. On gotng into another room he found the sergeant lying Tull length upon the table mm an inner room. setgeant Robinson, ‘fWenty-sixth, a similar charge. Mr. Jourdan charged that he was ag iyi down in a back room on the same morning. inson’s excuse was that he could not remain on Uesk auty for co many hours. He admitted the charge, but said he had not jaid down eight Minutes Wien Jourdan came in. ‘Tae doorman iniormed him that a yentieman wanted tosce him. Tho Reigh of Gift Jewelry Swindlers at an End. Judging from Superintendent Jourdan’s energetic eiferts so far to free the city of swmulers and thieves it will im @ month or two more be perfecily sale for our rustic countrymen to visit the metropolis with- out danger. A month ago there were thirty-two gift jewelry swindling cstablishments in the city, 1X Of witch Were on Broadway, two In Greenwich, twetve In West, two In Cortlandt, two m Liberty, five in Chatham and three in South streets. The perintendent ont he 2d ult. placed men at the door of each, with orders to warn people from cutering them, and when @ arly. was victimized to bring them to Police Headquaviers, — This plan worked to a charm, and hetore @ week passed every one of cle Sharpers was driven out of the business. Sir. Jourdan has aio freed the city of pancl houses by the same Vigorous measures, and there is no Jonger a chance for ward detectives to “square”? with the women in recover- ing money secured from green and immoral country- men by this species of robbery, Phere is stil more work before him to be done, however, and his atten- tion might profitably be directed (0 the Nuck divers who blockade the entrances to piers and depots and swindle travellers. A little determined energy va the part of ihe police at the depots and sieauers would be productive of great reiorm., At present 16 1s a question wheter most of the police on this duty ke not in coparinership with the dehus, Au incog- nito visit to the Hudson River or New Havea at nigat would be time well spent.
