Yesterday the Bowenites, growing desperate under their waning prospects, circulated through the Sixth Ward a report that the employes of the Navy Yard who voted for Mr. Emery would be spotted and dismissed, im accordance with an order from the Secretary ot the Nary. The Workingmen’s Association thereupon appointed a committee, consisting of Messrs. Joseph F. Hodgson and W. E. Vermillion, to wait upon the Secretary of the Navy to ascer- tain the truth of the matter. These gentlemen this morning visited the Secretary, and were informed by him that no such order had been issued, nor would there be; that every man was at entire liberty to vote for whom he pleased, and no one would be molested for exercising hix rights as a freeman to vote for whatever candi- date he saw fit. In connection witi this matter we wili quote tor the information of all government employes the following act of Congress, approved March 2, 1807, (section 3, page 492, Statutes at Large): ‘And be it further enacted, That no officer or employe of the government shal! require or re- quest any workingman in any nayy-yard to con- tribute or pay any money for political re, nor shall any workingman be removed or dis: for political opinion; and amy officer or omplore of the government who shall ofend against t provisions of this section shall be dismissed the service of the United States.” Not a ward had he got, nor g precinct vote, And he looked confoundedly flurried; Then wilted—dried up—and kinder gin e’out, As we bummers around him burried. ‘We buried him darkly that Monday night (For we fear’d he'd not keep until morning) By the struggling moon beam's m'sty light And street-lamps dimly burning. No useless coffin enclosed his breast, In a Chronicle sheet we wound him; Everlasting, we guess, will be his rest With so sleepy a print around him. Despite the overwhelming majority for Emery in this city the Bowen men nthe hea & fatet hope of carrymg the election by fraudulent Practices, and some of the talkative ones have been hinting, for a day or two, in mysterious way that they had ‘tixed things” for Monday, But vigilant eyes have been upon them, an the discovery has been made that their main hope of way of cheating ballot boxes, Thea eon, oe . a 1 es. boxes are so consti can be stuffed befoi they are taken to the votii Pl and the be. ered sthout the bo: me take ¥° witbou! xt taken apart.
