FIN CAL AND COMMERGIAL, mRNA Lb SrRER, Thonspay, Jane 205 Pe. ‘Wall street continues exceedingly duil, The prin- cipal operators have been absent at the Prospect Park races, while from London comes the same story of dutness, owing to the diversion of atten- tion to the Derby, THE STOCK MARKET STRONG. The stock market continues very strong on a limited business, the chief transactions occurring between prominent brokers, making what outsiders designate a “brokers’ market.” The public are still watting for the Anal dismissal and removal of the flnanctal measures pending in Congress, and the speculators are quietly and steadily advancing prices, in the expectation that when activity returns the public will be forced to take hold at much higher prices—a matter, by the way, which the aforesaid public will not have dione for the first time, should they do so now. The revival of the Funding bill produced @ flurry in prices this forenoon, and the whole market be- came weak; but on the explanation that the Fund- ing billis one virtually inoperative prices raliled again. Later in the day, on the announcement that atthe annual election for directors of the Chicago and Northwestern Railway tn Chicago to-day the so- ‘called Rook Island had been successful and the St. Paul party beaten, Northwest and Rock Island ad- vanced quite sharply and rendered the market strong and buoyant, except for Lake Shore which fell off from the best prices of the day, the rest of the Tallways generally closing at the highest prices of the day, Reading was an capecial feature and sola at 10% Western Union declined to 3134, owing o the passage of the July dividend, The specula- tion in Pacific Mail was less antmated, but the price Was strong at the close. New Jersey Central was firm ata decided improvement. ‘The investment shares were strong and higher, particularly for Fort Wayne and Chicago and Alton. Toward the close there was some activity in Boston, Hartford and Erie, which advanced to 5% ou the news that another bill more favorable to the stockliolders than the one Jast reported is about to be introduced in the Massachu- setts Legislature. The government market was strong at the open- ing in sympathy with the firmer tone of the gold market, but became heavy at noon on account of the large offerings to the government at the Sub-Trea- sury. The gold market was strong but very dull. The extreme fluctuation in the price was only a quarter percent. The large shipment of specte to-day had Uttle eflect. The summer export of specie seems to have been discounted, while the operators for a de- cline are selling quite confidently on the outcome of thirty-flve millions of gold from the Treasury a few ‘weeks hence in payment of the July {oterest on the Pudlic debt, The chief fluctuations of the day were = follows:— In the gold loan market the rate ranged from three Her cent for carrying to fiat for borrowing. The Her- mann, for Europe, wok out $400,000 in specle— $360,000 in gold bars and $50,000 in silver. Akers, have prepared the following memorial, which has been generally signed, and which they will present in person before Congress:— ‘To THE HONORABLE THE HOUSE oF REPRESENTA- TIVES oF ., THB UNITED STATS, IN CONGRESS AS- SEM. Your jemoriallsts would respectfully represent that the proposed increase of the burden of taxation upon contracts for the sale of coin and stocks, through a Oe ae would, in their judgment, be impolt- tic on the part of the governinent, and’ greatly in. jurious to @ large class of the citizens of the city of ew York, for the following reasons, to wit:— First—Ie would totally destroy a system which time and experience have demonstrated to be of vast willity. Socond—Lt would subject the Snancial interests of NEW YORK MERALD, FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 1870.~TRIPLE S$ a i ee the great body of pankérs and brokers in the city of New York to great risk and thconventence, Third—Is would give Wo ight or teu large capital. ists a monopoly of the bustiiess now carried on by more than one thousand indtyiduais, Four'th—It would greatly diminish the receipts of Internal revenue derived fro: Wis source, which, under the present sysiem, yields to the government larger sum of money than is obtained from the ame number Of persons in apy other branch of business. Wherefore, for these and many other reasons which ennnot be convenientiy enumerated here, your peti- toners pray that ihe proposed amendment wereas- ing taxation, as set forth above, be siricken from the tax bill now pending in your honorable body.
