Nota PLatr4, Neb., Oct. 6, 1860, As omigration is extending westward in Ne- “ ‘praska particular attention {s attracted to tho Repbitcan river region, The head waters of the principal forks of the Republican are in Colorado Werritory. Rising east of the great Rocky Mountain fange, they are forced to fina their way to the sea By some channel leading towards the Atlantic ‘Deean, Except the Frenchman’s Fork they come in a. sortheasterly direction from Colorado Territory into Jlebraske, where they join the main river, running @ast, paratiel with the Kansas border, whence the stream imeclines to the southeast, till it empties into the Kansas river. The Republican in its general Dourse thus describes @ kind of semi-circle. From ‘this point on the Union Pacific Rautroad, where the Platte divides itself into forka to the north and the south, the Republican river region ts distant be- tween seventy and eighty miles to the south; but one hundred miles further east on the railroad line the Platte and the Repubitcan are only forty miles e@pert This whole extent of country, which forms ‘the southwestern section of Nebraska, presents in ite topographical appearance an apparently iilimit- ablo area of high, rolling table land, intersected here ‘amd there, and especially near the river, by gorges aod ravines, many of which form the pathways of Streams of pure water which have their origin in Springs. All the uplands are good for grazing, and gome of them for wheat and other cereals, while tle valleys of the various. streams are quite snsceptible of varied cultivation. ®ome of the gorges and ravines are wild @nd rugged, and are coyered im _ places ‘With bushes and @hrubs of different descrip- tions. There is not a large amount of timber along the whole of the Republican itself, but at intervals ‘here are points whicn are heavily wooded, On the banks of Beaver creek and other consider- able iibutary streams there is an extensive growth Of fair-sized trees, principally cottonwood and hack- berry, while at particular points large groves and éven forests have been found. The Republican is not so large a river as the Platte or tae Loup Fork, but it is larger than the Little or the Big Blue, the Little or the Great Nemaha, and larger than the Elk- horn, Itis swift aud sandy, and ia most respects partakes of the general characteristics of the Loup Fork and the Platte. The Republican is to the south- Western section of the State what tne Little and the Big Blue and the Littte and the Great Nemaha are to the southeastern, what the Loup Fork 1s to the nonthwestern, the Elkhorn to the southeastern gud the Platte to all the Su: ate, Although the Republican river xegion and the Whole of the southwestern section of Nebraska is ‘Adapted to profitable agricuitura! or grazing pur- wery Jew settioments have been made there ‘up to the present period.
