FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. TUESDAY, ‘August 10-6 P.M. Iti just Mhree months since the last spike waa driven which completed the work of uniting the At- lantte and Pacific States by a continuous railway Tne across the Continent. The business of the Cen- tral Pacile between Sacramento and Promontory Potnt, between which places it has been operated for thal period since the opening on tied0th of May, is reported approximately as follows, muinly in goid:— Gross earnings, $1,703,350; operating expenses, $920,711; net earnings, $783,000, or a revenue of over $7,000,000 per annum, of which $3,000,000 are sfet profit, available for interest payments. ‘I'he aggre- gale of ihe annual interest payments for the past yeur wis $994,010, and it is not probable ticy will be Mnercased materially, In connection with these iniuai \caulta the company’s circular state. Re figures have been attained, of course, while the fuctittles of the compuny were at their newest #nd crudest stage, and at the same time that a large Bowl of unproductive transportation was neces- sary. Hoth freight and passengers are increasing so wapily tpat the company have made importaut r ductons In the rates as fast as their facilitics pe} mitted them, ‘They will adhere to. the policy ‘of en- evuraging the largest waflic consistent with we requirciients of thelr obligations, Tie mineral de- posits aiong the ronte of the road coutinge to atiract ‘atiention and add to its local busine while the dow prices and easy Cerms odcred to cuugrants must tend to increased setticment on the company's lands, wien are of great value. We feel, indeed, ‘Unat Lhe business of the Central Pacitic 18 in its in- faucy, and that us development to unexampied pro- Portions {n a very short period will be a uew cause of astoniaiment, ‘To-day was otherwise one of pecutiar tuterest in to occurrence of important ratiway movements. ‘The stockuolders of the Buttalo and Erie Katiway Company, ata meeting in Buitalg, voted to consoli- date wtih the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern, whose stockholders were also in session and voting ‘On the same question at Cleveland. At the Buffalo and Erie meetiag the vote was 43,339 shares in favor of consolidation and 81 shares against. At the meet. ing at Cleveland of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southera stocknolders on the question of consotiaa- tion with the Buffalo and Evie votes on 202,803 shares were cast in favor of consolidation, which ‘Was more than the two-thirds required by 10,965 suares, The consolidation of the two companies is tuerefore complete. According to the terms of con- soiidalion heretofore agreed upon by the directors of Ube reapective companies the stock of each com- pany 18 to go into the von’ lou. a The anew company will be aie the Lake Shore and Michivan Southern, and will extend trom Buifalo to Ohicago. ‘Tue books of the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Cbi- cago Ratlway Company closed to-day for the pur- pose of calling in the old stock of vhe company and Assuimg therefor new certificates, to be guaranteed by the Pennsylvania Ranroad Company to the extent. ‘of $19,714,286, in place of $11, 599,000, the amount of the stock of the Fort Wayne Company quistanding on the frst of July last, the date of the louse of is road. By the terms of this lease, which is in perpe- tuity, the latter gompany agreed to pay an annual reutat of $1,880,000 fo the stockholders in the Fort Wayno Company in quarterly payments, free of gov- ernment or State taxes, pr any other tiawiity or encumbrance, The rental capitalized equals ihe sum. for which the new certificates are to be issued. Upon these certificates atvidenas equalling one and Uiree-quarters per cent are to be paid quarteriy, free of government tax. The icase of the Fort Wayne to Me Pennsylvania road 1s a virtual merger of the two, The latier assumes the liabijitves of the former Sfevery kind, 80 that the rental to be paid to its stockiwiders is to be subject to no reduction from any cause, The payment of the rental is guaran. teod by the earnings of tie feaved jiine, which in the past Ave years have exceeded the rental that ‘would have been due, had the lease vevn in ope- ration, by more than $2,500,000. In addition to this tie Fort Wayne stock has the gnaarantee of the net earnings of the Pennsylvania Railroad, ; Which are $3,000,000 yearly over and above the | charges upon it tn the form of interest, sinking fund, ac. The fund annually aceraing for ibe pa: ment of the rental of the guaranteed stock equals $5,000,000 yeariy. The gecurrence of of these changes haying been long since dixéouuted the stock market exhibited but in A slight degroe any effect therefrom. In the afier- noon Lake Shore was somewhat firmer than the Test of fhe list, asa consequence of the consolida- tion, bnt closed off the highest figures of the day. ‘The market opened this morning active and onoyant n ail of those Western shares that have raled tor over # week past as special features, with an im- proved teeling in the Vanderbilt shares, and Pacitic Mail in sympathy with the rallways, These were about ali the active stocks of the list, After the drst call upon rather free offerings to realize there was a cousiderable decline, the market reacting before the second call and continuing, with the average fuc- tuations, about steady to the close. St. Paul was an exception, declining suddenly in the afternoon to 824 for the common stock and 91}¢ for preferred, from which, however, partialiy recovered belore the cloas, ‘The oxpress and miscelianeous stocks were dull and heavy. Cash gold was in active de- mand, and rates for carrying ranged from alx per cont down to two per cent before Ciearing House time. Subsequently three per cent was the ruling rate, with an exceptional transaction at fiat for borrowing. ‘Tho Cimbria to-day took out $50,000 in specie, and engagements for $209,009 are reported for the Russia to-morrow. ‘The nows of tho loss of the Germania caused an ad- vance Of js per cont when first reported in the Gold Room, ut as the amount of specie on board wae amall (only $61,000) the price soon fell of again, The folowing table shows the range of tue premium during the day and the figures at stated hours:— 10 A, Me sees WOH LP.
