AL AND COMMERCIAL. Faupay, July 16—6 P. M. ‘There was as uneasy, yet undefined feeling per- vVading the street to-day amd t#@ markets were gen- erally beavy and slaggish, The almost intolerable heat had a great deal to ao in repressing animation, and the usually busy sidewalks on Broad street, in {yout of the Stock Exchange, were deserted, a3 though they formed a portion of a desert, In the midday sun it was not difficult to fancy them pos- sessed of Saharan qualities, Among stock operators there was a reactionary feeling afier the en- thusiasm that carried up the Vanderbtit shares 80 wonderfully durme tue past five days, and the “bears? who had pluck enough to sell Were still rather indifferent about “short” transac- tions. The action of the Grand Jury and the arrest of many prominent bankers and brokers on the charge of usury added to the drooping tendency of the market, although ordmarily such a guarantee against stringent money would have led to a “bull” movement. In thts instance, however, the money Tenders, or in other words the capitalists, seem deter- mined that they shall have controi of the market despite the laws. To punish the “bulls’? who brought about these legal proceedings there 1s a movement to mcrease the margins tu loans on stock collaterals and so lead to great activity in money and a decline. There was great preference shown to-day for governments as collaterals, and money, with their pledge as security, was freely loaned at six per cent. On miscelaneous collaterals there was active demand, even up to three o*clock, at the full legal rate. Much of the uneasiness late in the day was due to a rumor that the Secretary of the Treasury intended selling ten millions of gold in addition to his semi-monthly sales. Tho effect of this report was quite direct upon the price ot gold, which fell to 136% about four o'clock. Foreign exchange was firm at the rates previously quoted, with a moderate amount or business for to-morrow’s steamer, Commerctal paper was tn better request and rates ranged from nine to twelve per cent, with the majority of sales At ten and eleven. The course of the gold é FINANCI market is shown in the tabies— ic 7%, 36, weeeeee 186 135% 186A & 195% Cash gold was tn fair demand and loans for carry- ing were made at 7, 73; and 8 per cent and 1-32 up to Clearing House and as low a3 5 per cent in the after- noon, The disbursements for corn interest to-day amounted to $706,440, The following is the report of the Gold Exchange Bavk:— Gold cleared $45,115,000 Gold balances. 1,740,806 Currency balances, + 2,374,050 A Washington special says that from present indl- pions at the Treasury Department tt 1s belteved the next public statement will show another large reduction of the indebtedness, though not near so large as Was exhibited on the Ist of the present month, The receipts frem customs and internal revenue are considered good for the dull season, Estimating the receipts aud expenses of govern ment for the remainder of July on the basis of what they have been to the present date, the debt state- ment ow the ist of August will show a reduction of upwards of $5,000,000, The government market was directly affected by ‘She easier feeling im money, and prices at the noon board were buoyant, especially as the London auo- tations came 902g. Later the market feil off a frac- ton with the decline in gold, but remained steady and firm at the lower figures. The following were the closing street prices this eventng:—United States sixes, 1581, registered, 120'4 a 12034; do. do., coupon, 1204 @ 12034; do., five-twenties, registered, 12113 a 1215; do. do., Coupon, 1862, 12344 @ 12394; do. do., coupon, 1864, 121), a 121%; do. do., coupon, 1865, 121/42 121%; do. do., coupon, new, 1865, 12044 a 120243 do. dn., coupon, 1367, 12044 @ 120%; do. do., coupon, 1563, 120% 12034; do, ten-forties, regis- tered, 1094; 2 109%; Go, do., Coupon, 1104 @ 1104; currency bonds, 107} a 107%. Southern securities were without special feature, except in the new North Carolinas, which again sharply dectined, selling at 454s, The following were the closing street prices for the leading South- ern bonds:—Tenuessee, ex coupon, 62'4 a 62%; do., new, 557% a 56; Virginias, ex coupon, 57/4 a 58; do., new, 6154; Georgia sixes, 83.a 84; do., sevens, 9035 ; North Carolina, ex coupon, 5644 a 57; do, new, Missouri sixes, 88; do., Hannibat and St. Joseph, 90a 911%; Loutsiana sixes, 68; do., levee 81Xe@s, 65 a 06; do. do. eights, 82 » 86; Alabama eights, 9254 @ 94; South Carolina sixes, oul, 68 @ 69; do., new, 65 & 66. The earnings of the Milwaukee and St. Paul Rail. way during the portton of the year ending July 7 ‘were $3,107,575, against $2,593,438 for the same period in 1808, an iacrease for the half year of $514,139, ‘The course of the stock market was generally to tower prices, not only a3 a sequence of the general duiness resulting from the warnt weather and the lack of spirit on the part of the “bulls,” but through adesire to realize on the shares which have ad- vanced so remarkably in the last few days. Agam the market repeated the paradox whieh has so often puzzled the street of declining tn the face of easier money. New York Central so:d down to 203% end then rallied to 211, but again fell off, while Hudson River was irregular between 170% and 182. The feature of the day was Pacific Mail, which declined from 86 to 81 under sales of long stock by a house reported to be heavily short of Central and forcea bo sell the one to buy the other, Wabash declined to 734s, and itis now intimated that the court pro- scedings are only a feint behind which a whole lot of the stock has been saddled on the street. A beat Attack was made on Reading, whien fell off to 9314. Western Union was weak and sold at 36%. In the general railway Mst there was a farther large decliue tn Hannibal and St. Joseph, which seems to be greatly sympathetic with New York Central, Rock Island touched 116}. Fort Wayne and New Jersey Central were steady, if not firm. Michigan Southern was heavy under very free sales, and declined te 106%. Cleve- nl, Columbus and Cincinnati fell about four per cent, with the general market, and probably on ac- count of the new connections of the Pan Handie route to Cincinnati, Northwestern was dull and neglected. Indeed, the whole market was heavy, the general list which refused to go up with Central dechning as it deciiued, The express stocks were heavy, while the best bill for Merchants’ Union was 6. Inthe afternoon it was reported that the direc- Sorsof the Pacific Ma Steamsttp Company, after a great deal of effort, would-be able to declare a dividena of only two per cent for the present quarter, The stock, at 81, Was at the lowest it ever touched. Tt did sell at 73 last spring, but ex dividend of three per cent, making the price equivalent to 81, The follow. ine were the closing prices on the call at the last session of the Stock Exchange:—Canton, 61%; Boston Water Power, 15), 91514; Cumberiand, 30% a 34; Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express, 21 a 21%; Adams Ex- press, 59% a 59%; American Express, 41 a 4213; United States Express, 72 4 73; Merchants’ Unton Express, 6 bid; Quicksliver, 16 bid; Pacifle Maul, 83% & 83%; Western Union Telegraph, 363¢ a 3934; New York Central, 20¥'4 @ 20044; Mariposa, 6% a 9; do. preferred, 1415 a 1614; do. certificates, 40 a 45; Hudson River, 180% a 1803g; Harlem, 146; do. pre- ferred, 148; Reading, 9355 0 934%; Chicago and Al- ton, 160; Toledo and Wabash, 74); a 76; do. pro- ferred, 79; Milwaukee and St. Paul, 7714 a 1714; do. preferred, 8744 ® 874s; Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati, 71a 74; Ohio and Mississippt, 3214 rort Wayne, 153 a 15374; Michigan Central, 131 @ 13314; Michigan Southern, 106% a 107; Tik now Central, 145; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 1074 a 10844; Delaware and Lackawanna, 110 @ 1124¢; Rock Island, 117% #11734; Northwestern, 80% a 80%; ao, preferred, 945% a 04%); New Jersey Central, 101% bid; Morris and Easex, 891;; Hannibal and st.
